Well it depends if your goal was to be hokage. From my experience, most boys of that age (10-14) who have spent considerable time honing their skills probably learnt from their older male role models are more than willing to prove themselves. Partially these are indoctrinated but I think a good chunk of it is just how young males are wired to act around other young males especially in the presence of their fellow rivals and role models.
