I don't think they're trying to be racist with unpopular because parents killed by a black man. It's more tied to cn novels culture where if something bad happens to somebody close to you, they want to stay away from you because if they get close to you the bad thing that happened to them will happen to you so it's better to stay away. And likewise, if something good happens to you or somebody close to you, they will try to get close to you so that they get good luck as well. It's very stupid and superstitious, but it's like your parents telling you to stay away from criminals and bad neighborhoods. Otherwise, you'll get dragged into that world, and something bad would happen to you. Likewise, they want you to be friends with smart or successful people to be influenced by them. So it's like that but magnified in Chinese novels.
