I look at the ocean and smile a little. I love the smell of the sea, and I miss it. My father is a fisherman, and when I am on summer break, he will take me to his job and even let me press the button that pulls the net.
That is one of the good memories of my past before it went to shit.
*Knock* *Knock*
I snap from my thoughts and say.
"Come in."
The door to my room opened, and Jeane walked inside my room. She smiles at me and says,
"You want to see me, Gerrald?"
"Yeah. I want to learn some magic right now. We have the entire day before we arrive at Nirva Island."
"Learning magic is not something you can learn within a day, you know? If the other magician hears what you said, they will go ballistic. Lucky for you, I know your potential, and I know you will learn a lot from only a day of learning."
"So?"
"Of course, I will teach you."
She sits on the chair behind the round table and takes out an orb from somewhere. She looks at me and says,
"Please take a seat and show me what you know."
I nod, sit, and conjure water and lightning balls above me.
"At the moment, I can create water balls and send them at the speed of sound, or I can control a large body of water to hold a small flotilla in place. Sadly, I can only do it for a couple of minutes before I need to catch a break."
She nods and says.
"That means you have excellent control and great reserve."
"Great reserve? I already said I can only hold it for a few minutes, right? That should be enough to tell you I have a small mana reserve."
She blinks for a second before saying.
"Where did you get that idea? Let me explain something to you. A magician is divided into five ranks: Apprentice → Journeyman → Mage → Grand Mage → Arch Mage. An apprentice is a time when magicians are still learning from their teacher. This is the first stage in becoming a magician. Next is the Journeyman rank. This is where the apprentice explores the world and learns how to use their magic greatly. After exploring the world for five years, they can earn the rank of Mage. To reach the rank of Grand Mage, a country must acknowledge the magician after they have done a great deed for that country. As for Arch Mage, it needs the acknowledgment of five countries or to do something so great the people start to give you the rank of Arch Mage."
Jeane takes a deep breath and continues.
"What I want to say is that what you have done is something a Mage can do. It is not something a Journeyman or even an apprentice can do. That's right, your mana reserve has already reached the level of a Mage."
"Oh"
"Yup~ With this knowledge, I know what kind of training I can give you. What kind of training have you been doing since the day you got your rune?"
"I am spending my mana to increase my container kind of training."
I show her my arms and create water rings on each of my fingers.
"This. I have been doing this. I make sure the water keeps moving and maintains the size of the water ring when I am not going into battle. I spend around ninety percent of my mana doing this because I need the ten percent to stay conscious. I will continue my training when I recover my mana to at least eighty percent."
She nods her head and says.
"It is great training, but most people cannot even move when they are at ten percent. The mental exhaustion is too great for them. I suggest you continue to do that kind of training, but this time, add this."
She touches the orb with her hand, and I can feel mana start to fill up the orb. The mana creates a light that dances around the orb.
"This is what many called Training Orb. Put your mana into the orb and slowly put more mana into it. However, you should be careful because the orb will explode if you add too much mana to it. To prevent this, I need you to search for an opening in this orb that will open up randomly every few seconds. This will train your control and increase your mana reserve."
I look at the orb in awe because this is the perfect training tool for me.
"For the next three hours, you shall train using this orb, and after that, I will teach you a couple of spells."
"Right."
"What are you waiting for? Go ahead and show me what you got."
=//=
"And done. Don't add more mana into the orb; slowly release all the mana inside."
I nod and control the mana inside the orb to leave the orb from the small hole on the orb. After a couple of minutes, all the mana inside the orb is gone. I nod and look at my teacher. I can see two books sitting in front of her. She looks at me and says.
"These two books will help you train your mana. Follow them, and you will have a solid foundation."
I take the two books and say.
"Thank you. I will read and practice what is inside the books."
"Good. Now, let's teach you some spells. Tell me what you know about magic."
I nod and look at her seriously. I tell her about magic in the Suikoden Verse from the knowledge I get from the Chrodechild Template.
"To use magic, you need to imagine what kind of effect you want and let the mana in the air and inside of you do the rest. Without the help of Rune, you will have a hard time putting the spell you want into reality."
Jeane nods her head and says.
"That is good. That is the basic and the most common way to use magic. However, I will teach you something I invented a long time ago. It calls a portion of the rune's power by drawing its symbol on the ground or the air. Let me teach you how to draw on the air using nothing but mana."
