50% Up in Smoke (Soulmate au) / Chapter 27: Checking on you.

章 27: Checking on you.

"Are you sure you'll be okay by yourself?"

She smiled at him, standing on the tips of her toes to give him a goodnight kiss on the lips. No. No, she wasn't sure at all. Her heart was beating through her chest and her head was spinning. The pit was coming. They were going to find her and take her back. He wouldn't be there, but was that any better? ~ She couldn't call her mother about this. ~ Assuming her Sensei hadn't already. That would only make things worse. To put her in harm's way again. To solidify all her doubts of being this far away from her. She'd want her to be there. That was too dangerous. It couldn't be her fault again.

"I'm sure, baby. Don't worry." She pulled away.

But he pulled her into another. Just as feathery ~ sweet as always as he held his hand beneath her jaw, the other against her back, holding her close as he savored the taste of her chapstick. He knew what to do to give her butterflies. To have her melting into him. Her mind fuzzy and her heart aflutter. He didn't want her to go. Not even for the fact that he craved her company but because this whole situation put a sour taste in his mouth.

He remembered the way she sounded over that phone call. Frightened weeping among static that bit into his chest. But that was only a nightmare. This was the real thing. A threat that had presented itself with more to come. A physical foreboding with a face ~ a mouth promising its presence over and over again. And that may have scared him more than it did her. He didn't want her to be alone. For his sake and hers.

She met him with a warm gaze as the kiss was broken again. Green reflections of sorrow and longing peering down at her. It was sweet of him to care so much. It made her consider actually letting him stay for the night. But she wanted to be alone for this. She couldn't pinpoint why - a portion of her wavering on just not wanting to seem like a bother. But whatever it was, she decided it'd be better to stick to it.

"I'll call you if I need anything." She patted the hand still grazing the side of her face. "But, I think it be better if I just went to bed for the night. Maybe sleep this off until the morning comes. ~ But I'll call you. I promise."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure." She nodded.

He looked at her a moment before sighing, leaning over to place his lips against her forehead, his hand guiding her neck to an upward tilt. "Be up by 5', okay? You're walking with me to school."

"Got it."

He left with that, seasoning a few more kisses on the side of her face before walking off with a short wave. She watched him down the hall as she slid into her dorm. Switching over the locks with a long sigh and flopping over her mattress. She was dead tired. Her arms and legs begging for her to rest but her mind in a constant sprint. She didn't want to think about it. She knew exactly what would happen if she did. Not after she had just sent him off like she did, then she'd really feel like a bother.

But how could she not think about it? When she knew the pit and just how horrendous they could be. Hundreds of brainwashed criminals brought under her father's wing without a purpose other than to serve him. People who had sick minds and disgusting ideas of how people should be treated. Men with claws and fangs ~ talons and stingers. So ready to jump a bullet, or be the one to pull the trigger.

It was repulsive. This cult that revolved around that bastard man of a father. Kneeling to him as if he were a god. A deity, an omen of good faith. Watching them bow down to him, so desperate for a figure they could look up to and find the worst possible parts of themselves in. They kissed the ground he walked on. All ears during his little speeches whenever he felt in the mood to awe at the sound of his own voice. Spouting on about righteousness and the weak. How below us the world was and how he'd take back what God had always intended for us. Glory. He'd give them glory.

But it was a scam. An empty plot to fulfill his own sadistic desires, to have the control he felt entitled to. Prancing around like a god so much he had convinced himself he was one. And she was his messiah.

The fulfillment of God's will. A testament. "Brought about to cleanse the world in her poison. Her pestilence will purify ~ malignancy and bane. To leave the world in ruins, so we may build it up again. Fall into me, I implore. And we will build you riches beyond that of God."

He was a fucking lunatic. They all are.

And they'd stop at nothing to get to her. Now that Daddy's dead. They were coming and they were gonna find her. They were coming and they were gonna find her.

The coils in her chest had begun to tighten when her phone rang beside her. Humming against her comforter as the slick fabric vibrated at her side. She grabbed it without a second thought. Clutch. She needed the distraction. Either that or wrapping up this evening with another panic attack. I guess the former seemed a bit more appealing.

(Y/N) glanced at the screen before swiping aside the lime icon to accept. She furrowed.

Katsuki is calling...

"..Hello?"

"Are you okay."

The question was stated as if it were a demand. The words coming out hard and rock-like, almost thrown against the side of her face as his voice speared itself through her speakers.

"Am I...Yes..?"

She could hear him let out a long breath on the other side of the line. "Good. You scared the shit outta me."

That...oddly made her blush. "I-I'm sorry? I didn't mean to...worry you."

"You did. You really fucking did." There was some shuffling coming from his side. "What the fuck were you even doing anyways? I thought you were out with your shitty boyfriend?"

"I was. I- We were just walking home and then- I don't know. This guy comes out of nowhere and just...attacks."

"You were attacked? What the fuck? -Did he try to mug you or somethin'?"

"No, he..." She hesitated. She had never really told him about her father. At least, not explicitly. I mean, he had to have had a vague idea of what kind of person he was from the way she spoke about him when he died. A monster. That's what she called him. She just never went into the specifics of what kind of monster he was.

"Spit it out already." He snapped his fingers. "I don't have all day."

"...He uh...He knew my father."

The line stilled at that. His side suddenly quiet and hushful. Inert as the faint sound of a running heater filled in the static. She was almost concerned the line had dropped, lifting her phone from the side of her face to glance at her screen; the duration clock still climbing under his callerID and the call still active.

She was about to call his name when the sound of his voice stopped her. "What did he say?"

She gulped. Should she really be sharing this with him? "Um... That they were looking for me-"

"For what."

"He didn't really say. But... I have a vague idea."

There was a sensation coming from her wrist~ one that she couldn't quite put a name to. It felt like panic but...redder - If that made sense. Like burning coal or molten rock. Blood that rushed against her skin, hot enough to burn through her flesh; but an urgency that triggered what she could only figure was her fight or flight response. Fight. An instinctual reaction almost enhanced by the conniption flooding up her radial artery. Frenzy like and animalistic ~ It was overwhelming and it was coming from him.

But his voice was calm when he spoke again. Leveled and composed. "Does Aizawa know?"

"He does."

He nodded as if she could see it. "What did he say?"

"He wants to talk to me about it tomorrow."

"Then I'm coming with you."

She blinked. "You're-?"

"It wasn't a question."

Izuku wouldn't like this. That was her first thought. She didn't know why but it was. But, I mean, could he really be mad? Katsuki was connected to her. Her panic was his. Her pain was his. If something were ever to happen, then it was only a guarantee that he would know about it first. He had every right to be in the loop. This was his business. She was his business. And even if she did say no he'd probably show up anyway. I mean, come on, this was Bakugou Katsuki we were talking about. ~ The literal spokesperson for "I'll do what I want." Illustrated.

"Okay. Yeah, I'll uh- I'll tell him you're coming."

"Good."

She could hear some muffled maneuvering on his side, presumably his bed sheets. He must have been just settling into his bed for the night. Probably tucking himself under his blanket and snuggling in for bed. She found the thought cute. Imagining him comfortably wrapped in his covers with his phone laying close to his pillow. She wondered if he had his headphones in. Maybe he was just listening to her talk through the speaker? Whatever it was, she couldn't help but find it oddly heartwarming to think about.

Usually, around this time she'd be trying to take her focus off of the chafe nipping coming from her left wrist. Trying to swallow down his sadness as she lay her head down for the evening. Only relieved by the presence on the other side of the line, the gentle sound of her sweetheart's snoring allaying her silent afflictions for the night. She considered asking him if he was okay. If he wanted to talk about it now that he seemed more at ease - but decided it be better to hold on to that for later. Besides, there was another question she wanted to ask him first.

"Did you," She stuttered. "Do you know? ...A-About-"

"Yeah, I know." He exhaled. "I've known for a while."

"And you still-? I-I mean, you don't think I'm-"

"What, do you think I'm braindead? Of course I don't think you're like your piece of shit dad. It's plain as fucking day." He scoffed. "And even if you were ~ I'd've knocked that shit out of you a long time ago. Like hell I'd let my soulmate be a fucking villain of all things."

She could feel her lips raise into a smile. That was the rudest sweetest thing she had ever heard and it almost made her tear up. God, he was so bad at saying nice things. She found it endearing. Being so accepted in the most "Bakugou" way possible. I mean what did she expect? Of course he would, they were made for each other. She was his and he was hers. Even if they were just friends, she couldn't feel any luckier for it.

"Hey, Katsu?"

"Yeah?"

"You're pretty great."

"Shut up and go to bed."
