章 67: There's Something Off About My Pokémon. [67]

Bonus Chapter!

---

A move at the Basic level means the Pokémon can't fully harness its power and might even fail to use it sometimes. At the Proficient level, the Pokémon can use the move reliably and effectively. When a move reaches the Skilled level, the Pokémon can use it effortlessly. And at the Mastered level, the Pokémon has developed its own understanding of the move.

Like when Lu Cheng had trained Vulpix earlier—its Extrasensory and Return had both reached the Mastered level. However, Flamethrower was still only at the Proficient level, meaning it would need more training.

"Keep up the good work," Lu Cheng said with a smile to his two Pokémon. He had a hunch forming in his mind. Comparing it to Su Xiangrou's file, he felt that the improvement of one move's proficiency might directly influence the learning of related moves. For example, if Grovyle could master Mega Drain, it would likely learn Giga Drain as well. If Vulpix could master Flamethrower, learning other fire-type moves would become much easier.

The training continued for another hour. Throughout it, Vulpix's Flamethrower kept getting cut in half by Grovyle's Detect, leaving Vulpix feeling a little dejected.

"It's all right," Lu Cheng reassured Vulpix. "It's only been one afternoon. Besides, Grovyle's Slash couldn't break through your Protect, right?"

Hearing that, Vulpix's eyes lit up just a little, and it let out a soft growl toward Grovyle.

"Vulpix really doesn't like losing," Lu Cheng thought. Much like Grovyle, Vulpix had a competitive streak in its core.

Since evolving, Grovyle could no longer perch on Lu Cheng's shoulder like it had when it was a Treecko. Now, it stood quietly, holding its bone sword. Its reptilian face, with its sharp, angular features, softened just slightly as it nodded at Vulpix with a small smile.

"You'll get there."

"Ms. Du Wen, are you here?" At Jiangcheng High, there were only two places where you could typically find Ms. Du Wen: the laboratory or the archives. Despite showing up to class on time every day, she rarely visited the teachers' office, even when her desk was piled high with gifts from students, both boys and girls.

"I've told you all so many times," Du Wen once said with a helpless smile during class, "there's no need to give me gifts or bring me snacks!" That alone spoke to how popular this young, attractive woman with a master's degree was among the students. Yet, for some strange reason, by the next day, all those snacks would mysteriously disappear…

"Mm, yes, yes, I'm here!" Du Wen called out after hearing the knock on the door. She hurriedly swallowed a mouthful of Meow Meow crackers and wiped her mouth with her suit sleeve before clearing her throat. "Come in!"

Du Wen sat behind her desk, flipping through a Pokémon encyclopedia. Seeing Lu Cheng, she adjusted her glasses and smiled. "Oh, it's you! Need my help again with something?"

No wonder she's such a dedicated teacher! Lu Cheng thought, nodding with admiration. He was genuinely moved. "To be honest, Ms. Du, I'd like to ask you about improving a Pokémon's move proficiency!"

"Move proficiency?" Du Wen put down the encyclopedia, slightly surprised. "That's funny—I'm actually researching that exact topic right now!"

"Really?" Lu Cheng's excitement was palpable. That's great!

"Come here, take a look." Du Wen pushed her phone over to him, the screen filled with densely packed text. "This is an article that was just published in Pokémon Science. It explores the effects of move proficiency on individual Pokémon. I found it quite interesting."

Lu Cheng's brow twitched slightly. Why does this sound so familiar? Don't tell me this is Su Xiangrou's uncle's paper!

"But it's only a general overview, without any specific data or proof," Du Wen said regretfully. "The author is from a technology company, so it's no surprise that some big names in the research community aren't willing to acknowledge it."

Lu Cheng sighed in relief, but then his curiosity was piqued. "Why is it a problem if the paper comes from a tech company? As long as the content is sound, isn't that what matters?"

"Ah, but the academic hierarchy is intense!" Du Wen said seriously. "Research companies like that are often seen as amateur by the more established researchers at Pokémon Institutes. Papers from those companies face much harsher scrutiny than others."

"Still, this paper seems to have some real substance," she added, huffing slightly. "I'm sure there are some knowledgeable people at the research institutes who'll recognize its value!"

"Um, Ms. Du..." Lu Cheng raised his hand weakly. "I just wanted to know how to increase a Pokémon's move proficiency…"

All this talk of academic squabbles—Lu Cheng had zero interest in any of it!

"Oh, right." Du Wen nodded in understanding. "Well, the most important thing is consistent, dedicated training!"

That's just common sense! Lu Cheng thought with a wry smile. "But Ms. Du, do you have any more specific advice? For example, is it better for a Pokémon to learn a wide variety of moves, or focus on mastering just a few?"

This had been troubling Lu Cheng for a while. He still had two TMs—Brick Break and Ice Punch—and Grovyle and Vulpix were both at the point where they were ready to learn new moves. If they spread their training too thin, they might end up being a jack of all trades, master of none. On the other hand, if they specialized in too few moves, their limited coverage could hinder their effectiveness.

Being a Trainer really is full of tough decisions!

Ms. Du Wen raised an eyebrow and asked, "How many moves have your Pokémon learned so far?"

Lu Cheng counted on his fingers, "Grovyle has eight, and Vulpix has seven."

"That's quite impressive, especially at your age!" Du Wen praised him with a nod. "However, if you train your Pokémon in too many moves, it can spread them too thin. My suggestion would be to focus on training moves that complement each other."

"For example—" Du Wen smiled, "I've watched your matches. For your Grovyle, it's clear you should focus on its slashing moves."

"As for your Vulpix, both Psychic and Fire-type moves are worth investing in. The choice is up to you."

Lu Cheng nodded. Her advice aligned perfectly with what he had been thinking.

"And one more thing," Du Wen continued, raising her finger with a playful smile, "whether your Pokémon should specialize in a few moves or master many depends on the specific situation."

"I know a Trainer with an Ambipom that only knows and has mastered two moves, but it's still the ace of their gym team."

"On the other hand, there are plenty of Trainers who focus on teaching their Pokémon a wide range of moves, and many of them make it to the national stage."

"It all depends on you," she said, pointing to the Pokéballs at Lu Cheng's waist with a gentle smile.

Suddenly, a system notification popped up in Lu Cheng's mind:

Ding—Hidden condition achieved. Congratulations, Trainer! You have unlocked the ability: 'Advanced Player'.

Ability Description: A skilled Trainer can choose the most suitable move combinations based on their Pokémon's traits and abilities. Advanced Players strive to optimize move sets for maximum efficiency. Your Pokémon's move proficiency will increase by 20%, and when the number of moves your Pokémon has mastered exceeds the number of moves they are proficient in, move power increases by 10%. If they are proficient in more moves than they've mastered, their move range expands by 10%.

A smile spread across Lu Cheng's face. "Thank you, Ms. Du!" he said as he rushed out.

Watching Lu Cheng dash off, Du Wen couldn't help but sigh, Ah, to be young! But then she scratched her head, a bit confused.

"Wait a second... the author of that article I read earlier—wasn't there someone with the surname Lu? What was his name again?"
