"Seven consecutive wins…" Lu Cheng muttered, keeping track of his streak. Ever since he'd defeated the Zangoose, he'd maintained an uninterrupted winning streak. "If I keep this up, it might count as a perfect task completion."
Looking around, he noticed the crowd had thinned, many of them already having faced him. At this point, they all seemed to hold a newfound respect for his abilities.
"Just as expected of the champion from Zhejiang! Seven wins in a row!"
"Yeah, doesn't he ever get tired?"
"Well, he does have two Pokémon, and you can tell they're raised on premium PokéBlocks!"
"Man, why is it sold out every time I try to buy some?"
"Duh, you need more than money; you need the right connections to get those!"
Unintentionally, the crowd's looks toward Lu Cheng began to carry a bit of admiration. Even his little fan, who had lost a match earlier, stammered as she asked for his autograph, her cheeks flushed with excitement.
"Anyone else?" Lu Cheng asked after a pause, seeing no one stepping forward.
"I'll give it a go."
A calm, resonant voice cut through the crowd, and Lu Cheng looked up to see a young man striding toward him, dressed in a light purple vest suit with a golden belt and crocodile-skin shoes. His hair was slicked back, and while he smiled, there was an undeniable air of distance about him.
The man introduced himself with a slight nod. "Yu Fengshi, organizer of today's gathering."
Lu Cheng returned the nod politely. He finally understood the reason for his discomfort—the way Yu held his chin high, as though scrutinizing others from above.
"Yu Fengshi's joining too? But didn't he provide the gold nugget?"
"Yeah, but maybe you don't know—he's the recent U20 champion from Shanghai!" someone murmured in surprise.
Gasps spread through the crowd. Two champions on the same boat?
One guy with glasses explained, "The Shanghai U20 Championship doesn't take place at the same time as Zhejiang's. It wrapped up just last week, and Yu Fengshi took the top spot!"
Another added, "I heard his father's the chairman of the Diantha Foundation. Can't say if that's true, though."
The guy with glasses pushed up his frames. "It's true. Diantha's a massive company that started in the gemstone industry, and now they're expanding into the Pokémon business. I heard their gemstone profits alone bring in millions every year."
The crowd buzzed with awe. Yu Fengshi, used to such chatter, continued to watch Lu Cheng, seemingly waiting to see his reaction.
But Lu Cheng remained indifferent. "You still want to battle?"
Determined to complete his winning streak, Lu Cheng raised an eyebrow, unfazed.
Yu Fengshi blinked, a bit surprised, but then smiled. "Of course. But let's make this a bit more interesting—how about a 2v2?"
"2v2?" Lu Cheng echoed.
Yu Fengshi chuckled. "You've got two Pokémon too. How about a double battle?"
The crowd exchanged glances, some looking amused, others concerned. It was clear that Lu Cheng's Pokémon had used up a fair amount of energy. Meanwhile, Yu Fengshi's Pokémon were an unknown factor. Most beginner trainers don't even practice for double battles; commanding one Pokémon is hard enough, let alone two. But with Yu Fengshi's privileged background, he'd likely had access to multiple Pokémon early on and rigorous training in both 2v2 and 3v3 battles. For him, managing two Pokémon was as natural as learning golf or horseback riding.
"Well, up for it?" Yu Fengshi smirked, folding his arms in challenge.
"Isn't that a bit unfair…?" Lu Cheng's little fan said in a small voice. "Lu Cheng's Pokémon are already so tired."
"Yeah, there's no real reason to agree to this." The guy with glasses nodded. "It's an unreasonable ask."
Yu Fengshi shrugged, his eyes narrowing slightly. "If it's the gold nugget you're after, don't worry—I'll give it to you, win or lose. This is just for everyone's entertainment. You won't deny us that, will you, Champion?"
Just then, the system's notification chimed in:
Ding! New Task: First Double Battle Victory
Objective: Win your first 2v2 battle against Yu Fengshi.
Reward: +3 Attack Points, Defense Booster (enhances one Pokémon's defense stat), and new Ability: Synchrony.
Synchrony Lv.1: Your Pokémon gain better understanding of your commands, enhancing synergy in double battles.
With rewards like that, Lu Cheng couldn't find a reason to refuse. Besides, it would still count as part of his win streak.
"Alright." Lu Cheng smiled. "But could I give my Pokémon some quick healing first?"
"Naturally. I don't want anyone accusing me of exploiting your fatigue," Yu Fengshi replied, shrugging lightly.
Just as Lu Cheng was about to reach into his bag for some healing potions, Lu Ning stepped forward with a gentle smile. "Let me handle that."
"My Anna here knows Aromatherapy," she explained, winking playfully at Lu Cheng. Yu Fengshi, on the other hand, looked somewhat unsettled by this development.
With a flash of red light, Anna, the small bulbous Chikorita, shook her leafy head, releasing a pleasant fragrance as green, Grass-type energy flowed from her. Not only did Aromatherapy restore energy, but it also relaxed and soothed the muscles of Pokémon, leaving them feeling better than before.
As the sweet scent spread over Vulpix and Grovyle, both Pokémon visibly perked up, appearing even more energized than before. Yu Fengshi's smile grew strained as he watched, and his voice turned a bit stilted.
"Champion Lu, how about we raise the stakes a bit?"
Lu Cheng had every intention of winning this match. If someone wanted to sweeten the pot, why not let them? "What kind of wager?"
"If you win, I'll give you these three gems." Yu Fengshi reached into his pocket, pulling out three gleaming, red gemstones. Each one was the size of a pigeon egg, radiating a vibrant glow that cut through the dusky light of the evening. Even without touching them, Lu Cheng could feel the fire energy coursing through the jewels.
His Pokédex lens confirmed it.
Fire Gem: A rare gemstone imbued with fire energy. Boosts the power of a Fire-type move one time.
As Yu Fengshi displayed the gems, a ripple of excitement swept through the crowd. For any Fire-type Pokémon, these were treasures—just one of these little gems fetched over 100,000 yuan on the open market!
"And if I lose?" Lu Cheng asked, tilting his head curiously.
Yu Fengshi's expression shifted as he revealed his real intent. "Judging by your Vulpix, you still have a Fire Stone on you, don't you?"
"If you lose, you hand over that Fire Stone."
