I dreamt of a world, where I wasn't such an outcast, where I fit in with my peers. I dreamt of a world, where I was a likeable person, where I didn't think of myself as a hideous person with no personality. In this world, I was a confident man, who trusted himself.
As I could sense my body approaching the ground, I closed my eyes. I was filled with regret... "I should've strived to be best I could. I should've worked harder." I thought.
Everything went black. I stopped feeling. Then, I felt something. It was cold. I opened my eyes, it hurt. There was too much light. I could hear very faint screaming, along with some high pitched white noise. I felt something pushing me upwards, yet it felt as if I was drowning in water. I slowly started regaining my senses. First, my vision stabilized. I saw a canopy, through which the sunlight was leaking in. It felt relaxing. As time went by, my muscles relaxed, and my hearing got better, but my vision was getting blurry again. I tried looking around and moving my arms and legs. Suddenly, I realized, I wasn't breathing, and my nasal cavity was starting to hurt. My lungs felt heavy. That is when it hit me. I was in water. I flailed my arms around so as to swim up to the surface. I looked around and came to notice that I was in a well.
"Arlo! Arlo! Come back up! Quick! Leave the pendant behind! Please Arlo..." A female voice cried. I looked up and rubbed my eyes. It was a girl about fifteen years old, though, I had never seen her before. "What pendant? Who's Arlo? Is she talking to me?" I was quite perplexed. Then, I saw something shining at the bottom of the well, at the borders. It had a weird purple glow to it. I decided to go underwater to investigate.
As soon as I went near it, before I had time to react, it flew towards me, crashed into my head -- though I didn't feel it -- and disappeared. Then, I heard a voice.
"Hello, Arthur... Or should I call you Arlo Leowood?!" I flinched. Not only did this voice know my name, it also signaled to the fact that I was not Arthur anymore.
"You see that pendant over there on the surface? Grab that thing, and go back up, she's worried."
I hesitated, and did not move at all. The voice, observing this, replied, "Hurry, now. I know you're confused right now, you'll understand as you go. Trust me. All I can tell you for now, this is not the world you used to live in, and here, you are Arlo Leowood."
I had much to ask, but I couldn't speak as I was underwater, so I decided to do what the voice told me. I picked the pendant up, and swam to the surface of the water. The well had small protrusions on the walls, perhaps for people to climb up or go down. As soon as I got out of the well, the girl came to me.
"Leo! How many times I have I told you to not do dangerous stuff like this so spontaneously?!" She paused, and then said, "But I thought you couldn't swim... When you went to the bottom of the well, I thought you were drowning... How did you swim back up?"
I was caught off guard, and started to think about how I do not have any information about Arlo Leowood. I don't know who this girl is, I don't know where I live, I don't know how I'm supposed to behave, act and talk.
I stuttered, and said, "Oh... I recently learnt how to swim... Oh! And here's your pendant.", to which she replied, "Hey Arlo, are you okay? You sound nervous..."
"Her name is Luna, and you have been friends since the both of you were children." The voice chimed in.
"Oh, thanks for that." I said, forgetting that Luna asked me a question.
"What?", said Luna, confused. "It's nothing Luna, lets go."
"Hey, you can't go to school with clothes drenched in water... Here look...", Luna said, as she took out her pendant from her pocket. Then, she touched my shirt with her pendant, and closed her eyes. Soon, I felt a warm sensation and my clothes began to let off water vapors, it was getting hot, too hot. Then it started to hurt, and I exclaimed, "Ow!", and Luna flinched, and stopped focusing on the pendant.
"I'm still learning how to control magic, I'm sorry.", she said, to which I replied, "It's okay, and thanks for that! Let's get going though, we don't want to be late!"
I learnt many things from this small exchange. First, was that only I could hear the voice. I also realized that the voice seemed to know a lot about Arlo, because as I was walking with Luna, the voice told me a lot of things about myself, Luna, my parents, this world, et cetera. The voice told me that the pendant that Luna had used was given to her by her father for self defense, and that she couldn't utilize it very well she had never learnt magic theory. When she was about to show the pendant to Arlo, it fell in the well where they were standing, and then Arlo jumped in to retrieve that pendant. That explained why I was floating inside a well when I woke up here.
The voice told me that today was me and Luna's first day at the Sorcery Academy. In this world, magic becomes an integral part of every student's life when they reach the age of fifteen. It's rare for students to learn magic before that because their bodies germane enough to contain and control magic.
As me and Luna entered the school campus...
