章 13: The Gears Of Society Turn Like Clockwork

In the basement of the Raikiri Guild branch in Brahken, their information guild branch opened up at nightfall.

It was perceived by the manager who came to the counter that a lot of people wanted to sell information today.

Some of them were their regulars and some were informants who rarely gave any information but when they did, it would always be information of extreme value.

For some reason today, the entire basement was filled with informants. There were still many informants trying to get inside but couldn't, due to the venue for their gathering already being full.

It was going to be a busy day. The manager prepared to get this over with rapid-fire style.

4 hours had passed dealing with all these informants. Most of the informants talked about the same piece of information, all from different perspectives.

The manager thought to himself, processing all the information presented to him,

'A man with radiant purple eyes huh?.....'

'Near translucent hair that shines near any light.... '

'Wears a noble attire, entered the city on foot with a maid, entered the 3rd rate hotel even though he is from nobility...'

'Went to the marketplace and bought a ruined book from an old beggar, the unruly guards of the city were easily placated by him through simple words, bought formation nodes from our guild's equipment store and a simple sword?'

'Why would a noble need to buy a basic simple sword that isn't even used by the adventures above D rank?'

The man then moved his attention to the picture that was clicked of the man by one of the informants.

'The inscriptions on this attire are of the Dacre family, but the Dacre family doesn't have anyone in it with white hair except for the fat loser Adam????'

'No way? But how can someone change so much so quickly?'

The manager got all the information in his data bank out, trying to make sense of the photo in front of him and the descriptions of the man given to him by the informants, someone who created so much buzz just by walking through the streets was a figure worth paying attention to.

'He entered the cemetery at midnight it's 4 am now, and he still hasn't returned to his hotel.'

'Even a toddler would know something isn't right.'

"Garum, go to the cemetery with your mana phone and tell me exactly what Adam has been doing there for so long."

"Yes, boss!"

With that shout, Garum had left the building. He was 2nd best thief in the Raikiri Guild.

He leapt from rooftop to rooftop, making his way to the cemetery.

He had finally reached his destination without even breaking a sweat, he saw the guards at the main gate were long asleep.

This worked in his favor, he would rather keep this mission on the down low as it was a reconnaissance mission.

He made his way to the top of the wall that wrapped around the boundary of the cemetery, he stood on a vantage point on the wall, overlooking the cemetery.

He spotted the man with the purple eyes that almost glowed in the dark as the moonlight brought shine to his hair, he was easy to spot.

He stood at the centre of the cemetery in front of a freshly dug-out grave with a black orb in one hand and a F-grade mana crystals in another.

Suddenly the ground started shaking.

Moments later, all the graves started opening up by themselves, what climbed out of them, were skeletal knights.

Skeletal knights were enemies with a stat value the same as a level 100 character which meant that their total unallocated stats were worth a thousand. Adam was nothing but an insect in front of them.

Garum could manage to kill a few but he would be overwhelmed by the sheer number of them, it seemed that all of the graves in the cemetery had skeletal knights coming out of them, this meant that if they managed to get out of the cemetery, the entire city may be overrun.

Thinking about the possibilities of this dire situation, Garum panicked and called the manager.

"B-Boss..... the entire cemetery is overrun by more than 100k skeletal knights! Adam is right at the centre of them as we speak."

"Have you gone senile Garum? How can there be so many skeletal knights in Brahken, this is the 2nd safest city in the empire. Besides, the guards would already be alerted by now if something like this were happening."

"BOSS IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME COME AND SEE FOR YOURSELF, THE GUARDS ARE ASLEEP THEY DON'T KNOW SH*T ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE!"

Ignoring his boss's next words, Garum moved the phone away and screamed towards the guards.

"YOU LAZY TAX EATING EARTHWORMS! LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE PLACE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE GUARDING!"

The guards woke up, about to question the suspicious person on top of the wall that woke them. Due to the urgency in his voice, they turned their attention to the cemetery.

What they saw, almost made their eyes pop out of their sockets and onto their hands out of shock.

"INFORM THE LIEUTENANT ABOUT THE SITUATION HERE NOW!!!!"

The 2nd guard ran into the city towards the Lieutenant's post.

Garum was still looking at Adam while his boss was barely audible, the guard that went away had already managed to bring in a squad with him and the Lieutenant in tow. They looked at the scene in front of them terrified.

The Lieutenant ordered, "Take a picture of the situation and inform the duke's house about it now!"

One of his underlings took a picture of the scene at display in the cemetery and ran towards the duke's tower.

Garum saw that the guards were planning to stand at the gate to stop the skeletal knights from getting out of the cemetery, they all knew that they couldn't defeat so many skeletal knights on their own but they planned to delay their advance into the city for as long as possible.

Suddenly, he saw Adam looking at him from the centre of the cemetery, amidst all of the skeletal knights.

Adam seemed to look towards Garum with an annoyed expression.

Adam threw the mana stone in his hand onto the ground and crushed it with his foot.

All of a sudden, all of the skeletal knights fell to the ground in a blink of an eye.

Thousands of skeletal knights had completely collapsed.

Garum looked at the scene in front of him, he couldn't find any words to describe it.

It was impossible even for a sword master to take care of so many skeletal knights at once, Adam had somehow managed to do it single-handedly.

This train of thought was short-lived however, dark mana started to coalesce at the centre of the cemetery.

Garum then saw Adam dig at a random spot in the cemetery with extremely fast movements as if his life depended on it.

Adam then went on to throw a used coffin from which one of the skeletal knights had come out, into the hole he had dug in the ground and jumped into it as well.

The orb of dark mana grew bigger and bigger as time passed until it covered the entire cemetery and Adam within it.

The orb, unable to grow any further, exploded.

The entire city of Brahken felt the shockwaves from the explosions, everyone woke up from their sleep as their beds shook, and many people fell from their beds.

The blast broke apart the walls of the cemetery, and debris from the explosion flew out of the cemetery, all around the area.

The explosion had torn apart the front gate and all that the guard squadron had to defend themselves was their shields.

After a while, the dark mana had finally extinguished, and the smoke started to settle.

Garum looked towards what was left of the cemetery.

It was nothing but a crater now, all the graves and tombstones were gone.

The only thing he could see was a half-burnt coffin without its cover at the bottom of the crater.

A figure of a man could be seen climbing out of it.

The man had his entire face burnt along with the front half of his body covered in burnt black debris from the explosion.

The only recognizable features of him were his purple eyes that still seemed to glow and his white hair that was now covered in char.

The parts of his hair not covered in char still glistened in the moonlight.

The half-burnt man made his way towards what was left of the cemetery's entrance.

He walked as if the pain from such severe burns did not affect him.

He finally made it out of the crater and out the front gate where an entire army awaited him.

The Lieutenant who was present at the scene and saw everything said,"You are being arrested for causing an explosion and destroying public property. You will now be brought to the tower to be judged by the Duke himself for your crimes."

The guards had already surrounded the half-burnt man.

The man chose to go with them without any resistance.

15 minutes ago.....

Adam had finally finished digging up the grave of an archmage of the past that had died protecting Brahken or at least the area that is now called Brahken, centuries ago.

Embedded into the staff buried with him, was a gravity stone of the highest purity. Absorbing this stone would give Adam the GRAV affinity and unlock the psycho-kinetic skill tree for him.

Adam took out the stone from the staff.

Suddenly a system message appeared.

[DUE TO YOUR HORRIBLE LUCK, THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD ARE ANGERED BY YOUR ACT OF DEFILING A NOBLE CORPSE AND HAVE CHOSEN TO AWAKEN MUCH SOONER THAN WHEN THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO.]

Adam knew he was about to be in a dangerous situation.

There was an organization in the game named Darkus Maximus which was a secret organization consisting of dark mages.

They had been secretly supplying dark mana to the corpses in cemeteries all around the empire to take over the empire in the future.

This was a plan that was over 30 years in the making and this cemetery was one of the places where they had been preparing undead soldiers secretly.

Through his terrible luck, Adam had ruined the invasion plans of Darkus Maximus in Brahken.

Years of patient hard work of many dark mages slowly seeped dark mana into the cemetery, wasted because of a cursed playboy.

Adam already knew what was happening.

The level 100 skeletal knights would spawn from all the graves and come out.

The difference between them coming out during the invasion arc and now was that there was no dark mage to command these skeletal knights so they wouldn't be making any aggressive moves until they sensed organic life near them.

These skeletal knights were incredibly strong and in large numbers but without a dark mage to lead them, they had horrible visibility and only managed to sense organic life through vibrations caused by movements.

Adam had planned to slowly move towards the main gate and then activate the anti-magic formation to destroy all the skeletal knights in one go.

Suddenly, he heard shouting from somewhere near the boundary of the cemetery.

'So I have already created enough buzz that I'm being tracked by the Raikiri Guild?'

Adam knew who the thief observing him from far away was. It was Garum the 2nd best thief in the Raikiri Guild.

Garum's presence annoyed Adam since he was another organic life form present near the cemetery and naturally he was making a lot of movement and noise at the border of the cemetery out of panic at the current situation.

Adam had to activate the anti-magic formation in advance because of him.

Adam threw and broke the stone bound to the formation. The entire cemetery became an anti-magic area. All the skeletal knights collapsed and fell to the ground.

Due to the sheer number of felled foes, the system judged that it was too much for Adam to pick up all the loot on his own and instead transferred all of it to his inventory instantly.

Sadly for Adam, enemies killed through traps and formations didn't give any EXP.

There was a silver lining however, he could sell all of that equipment afterwards.

Suddenly he saw dark mana from all of the skeletal knights starting to coalesce near him.

Adam knew he was f*cked.

This was the formation process of a 6th-tier dark mage spell 'Dark Implosion ' which was a deadly AOE spell that would cause a spherical explosion at its designated location.

Another system message came through making Adam's life even worse.

[DUE TO THE HOST'S HORRIBLE FORMATION CREATION SKILLS AND HIS TERRIBLE LUCK, THE ANTI-MAGIC FORMATION CREATED BY THE HOST WAS DEFECTIVE AND THE FORMATION HAS NOW BECOME THE BASE FOR A DARK IMPLOSION WITH THE SAME RANGE AS THE ANTI MAGIC FORMATION.]

If Adam didn't do anything quickly, his death was guaranteed.

Adam got to work quickly dug a deep hole with all his strength and hid himself in a coffin within the hole to mitigate the damage taken as much as possible.

The explosion occurred, and even with all the distance deep underground between him and the centre of the explosion, the coffin's lid burnt away, burning Adam's face and clothes along with it.

The clothes were made of such good material that they didn't burn away completely.

The same couldn't be said for Adam's skin.

After the spell was finally over, Adam made his way towards the exit, at least what was left of the exit.

Normally Adam should have already died just from the sheer pain experienced by someone with burn marks as severe as his on his face and hands.

Pain resistance was his lifeline in this situation.

Even with the A rank pain resistance he had, he still felt like his entire face was on fire and his body ached with every step he took.

Adam was surrounded and taken into custody by the guards and taken to the Duke's revolving skyscraper of a tower.

Duke Gavin Ivrea Arlae was currently the strongest archmage in the continent and one of the 3 archmages that followed the empire.

He and his family had just returned from Duke Yenalova's 5-day long celebration for the new academic year that was about to start at Magnises Academy.

It had been a long and tiring journey back home and he looked forward to a good night's rest tonight.

After several hours of sleep, he woke up after he felt a huge earthquake shaking everything in his tower along with his bed.

He immediately focused. He sensed an enormous amount of dark mana at the cemetery in his city.

It was likely that something sinister was taking place in his city without his knowledge. The thought of such a possibility stirred immense anger within him.

Soon the Head Butler came into his room urgently showing him a photo of what was taking place in the cemetery.

Getting a good night's sleep was a story of the past, it was time for him to move.
