章 10: Damian Henderson Must Remain CEO No Matter What
On Monday, Mr. Collins furrowed his brows at Irene Gallagher, who, according to his opinion, turned extra ugly over the weekend.
"Girl, which cheap tanning salon did you go to and why? I don't want people to start thinking that our perfume darkens the skin!"
It was an indirect allusion to Mr. Chris Henderson's humiliating performance just before the weekend kicked in.
As one of the more important employees in Primavera, Mr. Collins was of course present during the dinner event. He had to watch the disaster unfold like a train wreck, unable to even move a single finger to save the night.
It was painful to watch.
"Pardon me, Mr. Collins. I worked under the sun last weekend," Irene replied smoothly with a toothy grin.
Technically, that was not even a lie. She did attend the wedding and stood under the hot Sicilian sun for hours before her mission concluded.
Mr. Collins scoffed.
Of course.
Someone as ugly as Irene could not possibly go to a tanning salon to beautify herself. Not that it would be a wise attempt to become more beautiful. Irene Gallagher was in fact so poor that she had to do a side job on the weekend.
In comparison, Mr. Collins remembered that he spent a glorious weekend at the poolside. His wife rubbed his back with a tub of high-grade cocoa butter that they bought from a special shop in Brazil.
Oh, well. Not everyone could be as lucky.
Mr. Collins clicked with his tongue and went away. Irene's silly grin disappeared from her face like a wisp of smoke, replaced with a shade of contempt.
This HR Manager, Mr. Collins, was not without fault.
When Amalia Jones cried her eyes out in front of her and reported her superior/lover and his secretary for stealing her invention, Mr. Collins cold-heartedly told Amalia that there must be a reason for them to do such a horrible deed.
Amalia was speechless.
What reason could it be?
Whatever the reason was, apparently Mr. Collins believed that it justified the bullying.
He did not even flinch when Amalia Jones slowly fell from grace and was later kicked out of the company. Her life was destroyed just like that, and Mr. Collins as HR Manager did nothing.
Human resources were merely another kind of resources. The employees could be replaced easily. Mr. Collins of course did not want to risk his neck to save Amalia.
Irene looked at the watch on her wrist.
Oh my, she thought to herself. It was already 08.25. Chris Henderson was going to arrive at the office in twenty minutes. Just before he arrived, a cup of steaming coffee must be prepared and laid on his table.
Other than that, there was also a stack of documents that the general manager needed to review before the day ended.
Irene rushed to the nearest elevator and pressed number four to go to the General Affairs Department's floor. The door was already closing when she heard a male voice from outside.
"Hold it."
Irene lifted his eyes and stared into the same stunning pair of blue eyes from Grandpa Henderson's party. It was Damian Henderson. He too was looking at Irene through the narrow slit of the elevator door.
Irene swiftly pressed another button to open the door.
"Thanks," Damian said as he walked into the elevator.
Irene flashed the new CEO a nervous smile.
Damian narrowed his eyes at her. He looked her up and down, as if he was trying to decide whether Irene was there to work or to steal something.
"What's your name, Miss?" he asked with a deep, masculine voice that tugged on Irene's heartstrings.
"I-Irene Gallagher," Irene said while fixing her thick glasses in an attempt to fake nervosity.
"Hmm," was all Damian said.
The CEO's office was on the highest floor in the building.
As soon as the elevator reached the fourth floor, Irene stepped out in a hurry.
"See you later, Mr. Henderson," she said with a slight bow.
She rolled with her eyes soon after.
A bow? What was that for? A nod would have sufficed.
Everything was meticulously prepared and laid on Chris' table before the general manager arrived. Once he did, he was not at all a ray of sunshine. And he was not alone. June was with him.
The married couple argued all the way up.
When they entered the office, Irene tactfully stepped out.
"It's over, it's all OVER!" Chris shouted hysterically.
June shot Irene a look, prompting her to leave faster.
As soon as the door closed behind her, their clear voices streamed from the hearing device in Irene's ear.
Irene Gallagher curled her lips up in a devious smile. If she wanted to eavesdrop, who could stop her?
Irene took a seat at her desk and pretended to look through her mailbox.
"The way I see it, Grandpa was just angry and wanted to punish you a little. Damian knows nothing about the industry. How can he be a CEO? He does not even qualify to be our work floor operator!" June spoke vigorously about Damian's undeserved appointment as Primavera's leader.
"Correct! I am the far better candidate for the CEO position!" came Chris' answer.
"Of course you are," June flattered her husband to cloud nine.
"A CEO position is not an easy position to handle. He got it so easily, he was bound to lose it as easily. Sooner or later, he will trip upon something and fall from grace. You don't even have to lift a finger."
"But what if it doesn't happen soon enough???" Chris demanded. "I don't want to wait three more years, June!!!"
"Sssh..."
A smooching sound was heard.
"If his luck is too good, then we will help him trip faster."
Irene glared at the screen when she heard the two despicable people laughing in Chris' office. As long as she was not done with her revenge, Damian Henderson must not lose the CEO position.
