The next evening, Aldara sat alone in a dimly lit corner of the Iron Griffin, a hidden tavern nestled deep within the winding alleys of Lunaris. The inn was loud and crowded, filled with traders, street magicians, and all manner of unsavory types who preferred the shadows. Here, secrets traded hands as freely as gold, and nobody asked too many questions. For Aldara, it was the perfect place to lie low and plan her next move.
The weight of what she had uncovered the night before still pressed on her, and she struggled to shake off the feeling that the Guild's gaze was always watching, even here. She traced her fingers along the edge of a parchment—the note she had found, written in Marcellus's unmistakable handwriting. Its words replayed in her mind over and over: "The First Magic is awakening. The disciples grow stronger. We must be prepared to sacrifice whatever is necessary to maintain control. The people cannot know the truth."
She had once respected Marcellus, had seen him as a mentor when she was younger and still devoted to the Guild's cause. He had taught her powerful spells and had shown her the discipline required of a true mage. But now, after discovering his involvement with the First Magic and his allegiance to the disciples, she saw him for what he truly was: a dangerous man, willing to destroy anything that threatened the Guild's authority.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the tavern door creaking open. She looked up, her eyes scanning the crowd until she spotted him: a lean figure with a hood pulled low over his face, slipping into the tavern like a shadow. This was Dorian Fael, a thief and informant known throughout the lower districts for his knack for finding information. He was also one of the few people she trusted in this city.
Dorian caught her gaze, offering a quick nod before weaving his way through the crowded tavern to join her at the table. He slid into the seat across from her, casting a cautious glance around before lowering his hood.
"You're playing with fire, Aldara," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Whatever you've got yourself mixed up in, it's stirred up quite the buzz in the lower districts. Word is, the Guild is on high alert."
Aldara met his gaze, her voice steady. "The Guild is hiding something far worse than anyone realizes. I went into the forbidden archives last night, Dorian. I found proof that they've been using the First Magic, experimenting with it, controlling it. And Marcellus… he's working with a group of disciples within the Guild who want to unleash its full power."
Dorian's eyes widened, but he quickly masked his surprise. "The First Magic? Aldara, that's more than just fire. That's a blaze that'll consume the entire city. What are you planning to do with this information?"
"I need allies," she said. "I can't bring down the Guild alone, not with their reach and their power. I need people who are willing to stand up to them, to fight for Lunaris and for the truth. I was hoping you might know some people."
Dorian leaned back, considering her words. "I know plenty of people who'd love to see the Guild lose its grip on this city. But most of them are more interested in lining their own pockets than fighting a revolution. Besides, the Guild has enforcers everywhere, and even the bravest thieves and street magicians wouldn't dare cross them openly."
Aldara's shoulders slumped, frustration building in her chest. She had hoped Dorian would have a solution, a way to rally the people, but it was clear that fear ran deep in Lunaris. The Guild had kept its citizens in line for too long, using fear and intimidation to maintain control. Breaking through that wall of fear would be no easy task.
Dorian must have sensed her frustration because he leaned forward, his expression softening. "Look, Aldara, it's not that people don't care. They do. They're just afraid. But if you can show them something, give them a reason to believe that the Guild can be defeated, they might just stand behind you. They need proof that the Guild isn't invincible."
Aldara nodded slowly, considering his words. "Then we need to make a statement. Something public, something that shows the people of Lunaris that the Guild isn't as untouchable as they seem. If we can hit them where it hurts, show them that we have the power to fight back, we might just start a spark."
Dorian raised an eyebrow. "And where, exactly, do you plan to strike?"
She leaned in, her voice barely a whisper. "There's a relic in the Guild's possession, an artifact bound with the First Magic. It's called the Eye of Vaelor. It was one of the first artifacts they created to control the First Magic, and it's kept in the Guild's central tower, under heavy guard."
Dorian's eyes lit up with a mischievous glint. "Steal from the Guild? Now that sounds like a plan I can get behind. But the Eye of Vaelor… if it's as dangerous as it sounds, how do you plan on getting in and out without getting caught? Even for me, that'd be suicide."
Aldara's gaze hardened. "I don't plan on stealing it. I plan on destroying it. If we can break the Eye, we disrupt their control over the First Magic. It'll be a blow to the Guild they won't see coming."
Dorian whistled softly, a grin spreading across his face. "You're a bold one, Aldara. Dangerous, but bold. Alright, I'll help. But we'll need more than just the two of us for this. I'll put out the word, see if I can gather a few trusted faces who might be willing to lend a hand."
"Thank you, Dorian," Aldara said, relief flooding through her. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
He winked. "Probably get yourself killed, if I had to guess."
They shared a small, tense laugh before Dorian slipped back into the crowd, his figure disappearing into the haze of smoke and shadows. Aldara sat alone once more, her mind racing with the enormity of what they were about to do. Destroying the Eye of Vaelor would be a dangerous move, but it was the only way to weaken the Guild's hold on the First Magic. If they succeeded, it could be the first step toward freeing Lunaris from the Guild's tyranny.
The Night of the Heist
The plan was set, and the small team Dorian had managed to gather waited in the darkness outside the Guild's central tower. There were six of them in total: Aldara, Dorian, and four others—Nera, a fire mage with a rebellious streak; Venn, a skilled illusionist who could create decoys and mirages; Kael, a former Guild apprentice with a grudge against his old masters; and Mira, a thief with a talent for breaking locks and slipping past wards.
Aldara's heart pounded as she surveyed the tower, the Guild's imposing symbol of power. It was well-guarded, with sentries posted at every entrance and magical wards woven into the very stone. Getting in would be a challenge, but she was determined to see this through. If they could destroy the Eye of Vaelor, they would weaken the Guild's hold on the First Magic and strike a blow that would reverberate through the entire city.
She glanced at her companions, each one tense but ready. "Remember, we move quickly and quietly. Once we're inside, Mira and Venn will disable the wards, and Kael will guide us to the vault. We'll be in and out before they even know we're here."
They nodded, each one focused and resolute. Dorian gave her a reassuring smile, and she felt a surge of confidence. They could do this. They had to.
With a final deep breath, Aldara led them forward, slipping through the shadows toward the tower's side entrance. Mira stepped up, her hands moving deftly as she worked to disable the lock and wards. Within moments, the door clicked open, and they slipped inside, their footsteps muffled by the thick carpeted floors.
The tower was quiet, the only sound the faint hum of magic that permeated the air. Aldara kept her senses sharp, scanning for any sign of movement as they made their way through the dimly lit halls. They passed several guards, but Venn's illusions worked flawlessly, casting decoys that drew the guards' attention just long enough for the group to slip past unnoticed.
Kael led them through a series of winding corridors, his familiarity with the tower evident in the way he moved. They finally reached a large, iron-bound door at the end of a narrow hall. The door was covered in protective runes, each one pulsing with a faint blue light.
"The vault," Kael whispered, his voice barely audible. "The Eye of Vaelor is inside."
Mira went to work on the lock, her hands steady despite the tension in the air. After a few heart-stopping moments, the door swung open, revealing a small chamber lined with shelves and displays of magical artifacts. In the center of the room, on a pedestal bathed in a soft, eerie glow, rested the Eye of Vaelor.
The artifact was a crystal sphere, dark and foreboding, with tendrils of black energy swirling within its depths. Aldara felt a chill run through her as she gazed at it, the sheer power of the First Magic emanating from the artifact like a pulsing heartbeat.
"Is that… safe to touch?" Dorian muttered, eyeing the artifact warily.
"No," Aldara replied. "But we don't need to touch it. We just need to destroy it."
Nera stepped forward, her hand already glowing with the flame she was conjuring. "Stand back," she warned, her gaze fixed on the Eye. "I'll handle this."
Aldara nodded, and the group stepped back as Nera summoned a torrent of fire, directing it toward the Eye. The flames engulfed the artifact, crackling and hissing as they burned, but the Eye remained unharmed, the tendrils of energy within it swirling faster as though feeding on the fire.
Nera gritted her teeth, increasing the intensity of the flames, but it was no use. The Eye absorbed the fire, its glow growing stronger, the darkness within it swirling with a menacing light.
"Stop!" Aldara called, realizing the artifact was growing more powerful with each second. "It's feeding off the magic."
Nera cut off the flames, her face pale as she stepped back. "What do we do now?"
Aldara's mind raced, her heart pounding as she searched for a solution. Destroying the Eye wouldn't be as simple as she'd hoped. The artifact was too powerful, too deeply connected to the First Magic to be destroyed by conventional means.
"Let me try something," Kael said, stepping forward. He extended his hand, whispering an incantation that caused a faint shimmer to appear around the Eye. It was a binding spell, a powerful one, designed to disrupt the magic within the artifact.
The Eye pulsed, resisting the spell, but Kael held firm, his face twisted in concentration. The energy within the Eye began to waver, the tendrils of darkness slowing as the binding spell took hold.
But then, without warning, the Eye emitted a burst of energy, shattering the binding spell and sending Kael stumbling back. A wave of dark magic erupted from the artifact, filling the room with a cold, suffocating presence.
Aldara felt the weight of the magic pressing down on her, threatening to consume her. She could hear the whispers, faint and haunting, the voice of the First Magic reaching out to her, tempting her to give in.
"Everyone, out!" she shouted, forcing herself to move through the oppressive energy. "We can't destroy it. Not like this."
The group scrambled for the exit, their breaths labored as they fought against the pull of the dark magic. They stumbled out of the vault, Mira slamming the door shut behind them, and Aldara cast a quick ward over the entrance to contain the energy.
They leaned against the wall, catching their breaths, their faces pale as they looked back at the sealed door.
"What… was that?" Venn gasped, his eyes wide with fear.
"The First Magic," Aldara replied, her voice shaking. "It's more powerful than we thought. And the Guild… they're using it to keep their control over Lunaris."
Dorian placed a hand on her shoulder, his face grim. "Then we'll need a new plan. If we can't destroy the Eye, we'll have to find another way to weaken the Guild."
Aldara nodded, her resolve hardening. The Eye of Vaelor was beyond their reach for now, but she wasn't giving up. The Guild's control over the First Magic was a threat to everyone in Lunaris, and she would find a way to stop them.
Together, they made their way back through the tower, slipping into the night as they disappeared into the shadows, their minds already turning toward their next move. The fight was just beginning, and Aldara was prepared to do whatever it took to free Lunaris from the Guild's grasp.
