章 46: Howling Wolves 1

(A/N: cause she da only female lead right now and I need to write a few chapters. I finally understand why fillers are important kek. Also, I wanted to try writing in a different point of view. Want to see if that would make things better and more realistic. If I succeed from writing in Seraphine's point of view, my next book may have a female mc. Enjoy the filler.)

[Seraphine point of view]

I remember the day when my father, my kind loving father who shared my black hair and red eyes, came up to me with a worn expression fulfilled with guilt and regret and said to me in a soft helpless voice: "I'm sorry."

I was a child back then, about the age of seven, and was unable to understand why my father had apologized to me but soon figured out many years later that the day he apologized to me was the day he married me off to a different kingdom for a necessary alliance with the kingdom of water.

When I figured out that I had a fiancé, all without my position, I did what any normal person would do and I complained. I was livid with my father and rightfully so. I started to suspect that my father didn't love me and that I was nothing but a pawn for power in his eyes.

But I was a child then, an immature child with a narrow mind and a huge temper. I didn't realize how cold and cruel the world was.

Ever since I was born, I was surrounded by wolves. Of course, these were not actual wolves who lived in the forest and howled at the moon at the peak of night. No, the wolves around me were family and nobles. And like the wolves from the forest, the wolves in my life would hunt and kill the people around me.

I've seen people argue with each other for power, it happens all the time. An assassination here, an assassination there, anything to get more power and more wealth. Anything to achieve their dreams.

I've seen two of my brothers die over the years from assassinations, and although there is no evidence to suggest it, I suspect that the deed was done on the command of one of my other brothers.

I've been courted many times, not due to real affection and good intentions, but for the status of becoming a duke and the chance of becoming the next in line for the throne. Old men, young boys, I've seen them all.

Even after my engagement was announced, there was still a constant stream of people trying to court me. This became one of the main reasons why I became so fearful of my engagement with this foreign prince from a far away land. Was he another wolf that would use me as a stepping stone for power, and throw me away when I became unnecessary?

It is sad what a royal life does to a young child such as I. How twisted politics can get for a man to kill his own brother without hesitation.

Eventually, I forgave my father and agreed to meet my since long determined fiancé. I took a carriage and traveled for a long time until I arrived at the capital city of the kingdom of water.

That was the day I met Will, my soon to be best friend, and my fiance.

I walked into the palace with my father, nervous and frightened at who my fiancé would be. How he would be like. Hopefully he would be a nice man, not too much older than me nor too much younger.

However, when I met my fiancé for the first time, I was severely disappointed. I had met another wolf.

As our parents talked with each other and engaged in some minor pleasantries, I could feel my fiancé's gaze on my face and my body, causing my nerves to tingle unpleasantly. He was the second prince of the kingdom of water and was said to have been born with great talent and ability. He was said to have been way superior than his brother the crown prince. But beneath his kind face and bright smile was another revolting and disgusting wolf.

All my previous determination to go through with the engagement seemed to disappear as my innermost self started reject my future husband with everything it had. I stood up and ran away from the room.

I ran through many doors and hallways, I passed many people who yelled for me to stop. I blindly ran through the maze of a castle until I had found a solace of peace in some desolate corner of the castle where no one could touch me. A place where I could be alone to calm down.

At first, I collapsed to my knees and did my best to catch my breath. I had been running for so long that the moment I stopped, I realized just how painfully my heart had been beating.

It was like a blacksmith was hammering a nail into my chest and every breath I took was equally as agonizing.

But as time began to pass, my heart became quieter and my breaths became slower and my turbulent mind once again became calm. And for the first time since stopping, I observed my surroundings.

All around me were books of all shapes and sizes. These books were contained within bookcases that seem to reach the skies and came in a variety of colors, making the act of just glancing at the book covers interesting.

Feeling a sense of curiosity and wonder taking over my actions, I slowly explored the room making sure to absorb every little visual detail I could remember.

It was obvious that the room I was in was a library of some sort, maybe a book storage? But everything seemed so clean and well taken care of. It was as if another Person other than me was lurking around the corner reading a book.

And then, right as I had turned to corner on the furthest bookshelf nearest to the window, was him.

The boy with dark grey hair like thundering clouds and stormy gray eyes that stared listlessly into the sky.
