There was a cold silence that ensued following his mother's claims. That silence did not last any longer than a heartbeat. During that brief moment, Rochester buried both hands inside his pants pockets. He looked at his mother and saw how she'd begun to massage her thumbs into her temples. Her face looked placid as she kept at it, but Rochester knew she was fighting a real battle inside her mind — one that involved him and how stupid he was being for taking that woman's side.
