章 45: SCARS

Mikael was left staring in the ceiling. He did not have anything particular in mind and he just stayed staring at nothingness, in the darkness. His mind, preoccupied with the void.

Occasionally, the curtain of his window would dance with the wind as the night breeze from the outside made it move. From time to time, the moon would peek within that same window and its silver moonlight would shed its light at Mikael's bed, illuminating the end of his bed as well as his cold feet.

Whenever that happened, Mikael would saw his scar and would be reminded of the token that he got from his years of service in the police department.

Most of the time, people often overlooked how he was actually limping on one side. Truth be told, even he, himself, often overlooked that fact. Only that big scar that was left on his leg down to his foot served as a constant reminder to him.

Realizing that sleep totally eluded him for that night, Mikael chose to entertain himself instead.

He flexed his scarred foot so it would catch the moonlight and he could get a better look of it, then he stared at it closely afterward.

At certain angles, it would appear perfectly smooth and unblemished, however whenever he moved it again, there he would saw that his left foot actually had a long and wide scar; its surface a bit paler compared to the rest of the skin that surrounded it.

Scars.

For some reason, the longer Mikael stared at his scars, the farther his thought drifted. Until he was once again reminded of Daniel and his press conference that night.

"Did he really found the right man?"

He wondered to himself as he personally doubted if anyone could even actually do the deed.

That night, Mikael was haunted by answered questions. It was not that he did not want the Bureau to succeed.

In fact, he would probably be one of the few who would truly rejoice once the case was declared solved and close. However, it was just that, he simply could not rest easy, not yet.

Was it really possible for someone to detect the scars that lie just under the skin???

He wondered if Daniel and his team could really get the disease that took root, not in the blood nor muscle, not in the bone or pulsing organ either. But rather on the mind.

The mind that could cunningly hide its illness beyond the reach of X rays and electronic probes and surgical needles.

Mikael wondered if he, himself knew enough to recognize the scar once he saw it; just beneath the skin of some seemingly ordinary, yet deceptively normal man.

He flexed his feet again and changed the angle, and once again, the scar disappeared. Mikael stared a little longer at his scar and then he closed his eyes afterward.

The other party's eyes might be closed already, but his mind was still active and flooded with questions.

"In what kind of light will I see your scars?"

He wondered.

Meanwhile, inside one of the open concept newsroom of a major television network, a petite young lady with an auburn hair could be seen answering a sodoku puzzle on an old newspaper.

The other party had her back on the door as she was also glancing every now and then on the television before her. She was watching the late evening news and was busy chewing her bubble gum while at that. Clearly she was one of the few people who could do multi-tasking just fine.

The room was huge and it actually looked like a room for monitors as the room actually used one of its side specific only for television monitors. There were dozens of them and stainless steel rackets were used to set them on the same wall.

A metal file cabinet where most documents were being kept was placed in the middle of the room to create a partition.

Occasionally, a mechanical sound coming from a dot-matrix network printer could be heard on the background as the old machine tried its best to print the needed news scripts and reports. If not for that sound, the place would easily pass off as being deserted.

Other than that, a lingering smell of brewed coffee mixed with the smell of toner used for photocopying machines also hung heavy in the air.
