章 89: Chapter 89: Garlic... Cross

(Vote Plz....)

In the dormitory, the group of students who had just finished their Astronomy class crowded around George's bed, flipping through "Simple Alchemy" and discussing its contents.

Albert never expected that "Simple Alchemy" would have such an appeal to Fred and the others. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the author of the book was Zoko from the joke shop.

Although the title of the book was "Simple Alchemy," its contents were far from simple for first-year students. With insufficient knowledge, it was quite challenging to understand and comprehend the contents of the book.

In Albert's eyes, Fred, George, and Lee Jordan showed an extraordinary enthusiasm for "Simple Alchemy," probably because they associated alchemy with Zoko's prank props.

If alchemists were aware of this, who knows how they would feel.

Albert had doubts about "Simple Alchemy," mainly because after reading the book, no alchemy-related skills appeared on his panel.

According to convention, when listening to, reading, or actively studying related knowledge, corresponding skills would appear on the panel. The absence of skills meant that the book was not about alchemy, or perhaps the alchemical knowledge was not sufficient to form skills.

As Albert contemplated, he stirred the milk tea in front of him, raised his head to look at the three whispering individuals, took a sip from his teacup, and asked, "Aren't you guys eating? By the way, can you understand that book?"

"Barely, to be honest. I never expected Zoko to be an expert in alchemy," Lee Jordan sighed, thinking that publishing a book indicated a decent level in that field.

"He's not exactly an expert, but he has some knowledge of alchemy. Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to create those prank props," Albert finished eating the cookie in his hand, finished the milk tea in his cup, stood up, stretched lazily, and prepared to rest.

"You've finished reading the book, cough... water!" Fred took a cookie from the plate and handed it to Lee Jordan before taking a bite himself, but ended up choking while talking.

"I've finished. I'll return the book to the library tomorrow," Albert poured a glass of water for Fred absentmindedly. "If you want to read it, come with me tomorrow and borrow it yourself."

After gulping down a mouthful of water, Fred recovered.

"Okay, I'll go with you tomorrow," George said. He picked up a cookie from the plate that Lee Jordan handed over, took a bite, and after thinking for a moment, asked, "Have you ever thought..."

"I'm not interested," Albert interrupted.

"I haven't even finished speaking..." George looked at his roommate with a speechless expression.

"You guys aren't hard to figure out." Albert's face showed an expression of "don't think I don't know what you're thinking," as he reminded them, "Alchemy is at least a third-year level subject. It's too difficult for you at the moment. I dare say you probably won't even understand that book."

"I don't believe you can't understand it," Fred retorted with a smirk.

If Albert really couldn't understand it, he obviously wouldn't have finished reading the entire book, as it would be extremely painful to struggle through a book you can't comprehend.

The guy in front of him clearly didn't have that particular quirk.

"Understanding and being able to do it are two different things," Albert reminded them. "Alchemy isn't as simple as you think. That book is just a joke."

"We never said we wanted to learn alchemy," Fred said cunningly. "We just want..."

"Alright, if it's alchemy you want..." Albert pondered for a moment, then reached into the pocket of his robe and pulled out a rough-looking cross, tossing it to George. "This is a talisman I made. It can protect you from the intrusion of dark creatures. If you want to learn, first master the Severing Charm, and I'll teach you."

"You're just bluffing us!" Fred looked completely unconvinced. "And besides, don't you think this cross looks too ugly?"

Albert said solemnly, "This thing is worth two Galleons."

"Two Galleons?" Fred and George's voices raised slightly as they examined the rough cross, seemingly wanting to see why it was worth that price.

"Can you actually sell it for that much?" Lee Jordan rolled his eyes at Albert from the side. After spending a month together, he had come to understand his roommate's character a bit. When it came to fooling others, Albert was 60% truthful and 40% deceptive, enough to leave unsuspecting people dumbfounded.

"That's right," Albert said. "The effect of this thing is the same as the talisman in that book, and it's even made from the wood of the Guardian Tree. Most of the talismans sold on the market are made from Guardian Tree wood, just with more variety in styles and better craftsmanship, but they're essentially the same."

"Does this thing actually work?" Fred asked skeptically.

"On the contrary, this thing's effect... is extremely poor," Albert paused for a moment and continued, "according to the description in that book, you just have to soak the cross in garlic, take it out after a few days, let it dry, and repeat the process several times, and you'll get a cross that smells strongly of garlic."

"That's an interesting note. Well, then you can give me the cross for free since you can make a bunch of them anytime," Fred said.

"But where do we get garlic?" Fred seemed quite interested in the idea of a garlic-flavored cross. He had heard that it had the effect of repelling dark creatures.

"If you want to eat garlic, the house-elves in the school kitchen would definitely be willing to give you some, but if they find out..." Albert's face displayed a mischievous smile. "Even if they're willing to give you garlic, would you dare to waste it like this?"

"Alright!" Fred gulped nervously. If Professor McGonagall found out they were wasting a large amount of garlic in the school, their family would probably have to send howler letters to the school.

George had a brilliant idea. "We can get garlic from the kitchen and borrow Hagrid's vegetable patch to plant garlic. Then we won't have to worry about running out of garlic."

"That's a great idea!" everyone nodded in agreement.

What kind of crazy plan was this!

Albert listened to the three of them preparing to plant garlic and couldn't close his mouth in astonishment. It was the first time he realized that his thinking and that of his roommates were not on the same wavelength.

"Do you really plan to... plant garlic yourselves?" Albert asked, still in disbelief.

"Of course," the twins said in unison.

"Do you even know how to plant garlic?" Albert asked tentatively.

"We don't know, but Hagrid surely does."

Albert's face twitched a couple of times, and he didn't continue questioning. He didn't think Hagrid would agree to let them cause trouble in his vegetable patch.
