Elizabeth had tried desperately but quite unsuccessfully to resist the urge in her to pay her son, Alex, a visit.

Each time, she tried to convince herself to wait since Alex had promised to come see her again. She understood he was no longer a boy, but a man who had enormous responsibilities weighing on him.

Alex had promised to introduce the woman he was dating to her, and she was so eager to meet her, to know her and know how Alex lived.

For many years she had wondered how Alex lived. If he slept well enough, ate enough, and wondered the kind of company he kept.

They had lost many years apart — years they would never be able to get back, but they could make the most of the time they had now.

She still wanted the opportunity to be a mother to him even though he was all grown now. She wanted to do the few things she'd be able to do for him, and even though he might not need them anymore, she still wanted to do them for him.
