(Present)
"Jin Mingze, do you remember how we first met?"
His senses perked up when he heard her question. Does she finally remember?
"I don't seem to understand the question." He said as he went and sat on the couch.
A small smile appeared on Chen Rui's lips, "Will you hate me?" She asked next.
"What do you mean?"
He watched her approach him. She stood in front of him and she looked like she was being hesitant on saying something.
"I am going to be honest with you...." She sat beside him. She looked at her hands and clenched them.
She inhaled deeply before facing him. She breathed out as she said, "I already have my memories back since the other day."
Words left him. he stared into those ink-black eyes in disbelief, and his heart fell silent. Chen Rui saw the shock register in his face.
"Why..." His voice almost cracked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I wasn't really planning to." She averted her eyes from his searching gaze.
"The first time we met was at your birthday..." She started. "We didn't marry out of love. We never loved each other... that's why our relationship was bound to fail. I... was even planning on having a divorce with you."
Her words were like a dagger, stabbing his chest. Jin Mingze could feel pain, so much raw pain to the point where it was suffocating him.
That wasn't entirely true for Jin Mingze's case. Ever since he met her, he has started thinking of her out of curiosity since there was something that made him attracted to her.
Later on, when she started visiting his sister, most of the time, he would only see her from afar. Maybe that's where it began, the little crush that started growing in his chest. He was satisfied by looking at her from afar. Soon enough that little crush grew and became love.
When he learned that their parents have engaged them with each other, he was overwhelmed with joy.
He could still remember the moment when he watched her walk down the aisle. She was extremely beautiful, like an angel that came down from heaven.
His heart was pounding loudly as he watched his first love approach him.
The first kiss he had with her was as sweet as he imagined.
Although as they began their married life, in fear of getting on her bad side, he maintained his distance and respected her privacy so they ended up sleeping in different rooms.
In their relationship, he was the only one who was having those feelings. He could only wait for her to grow feelings for him although he never made a move because of how he was busy back then.
Then... does that mean that she never loved him?
He has always treasured the memories he had with her. Every moment was precious and yet... those words were enough to shatter his heart.
Only a lover such as her can cause pain as deep as this. Only one all the way inside a heart can shatter it with just a few words.
Before the accident happened, Jin Mingze and Chen Rui were in bad terms and now they were back to that track, silence befell them.
"I even tried to kill you..." She continued.
He lowered his head at what she said. He knew that. She tried to save the assassin that was after him. There could only be one meaning into it, she was related to that woman.
The thought about Chen Rui being a spy against him even entered his mind back then but even if that was the case, he didn't expose her.
When they fought, she tried her best to protect her stomach. That could only mean that she was protecting their child... that she still cared about the child they made.
"I know..." He said with a whispering voice.
Chen Rui snapped her head to him in surprise when she heard what he said. "You... knew?"
She could feel her heart thumping strong in her chest.
If he knew... then why did he allow her to stay beside him?
Was that also one of the reasons why he became strict on her?
He was still looking at his hands. His thoughts we're flying back to their past and each time recalled the words that stabbed his heart made it even harder for him to look at her.
She never said 'I love you' even once.
Was he just... forcing her all this time?
"Jin Mingze, I-"
"Tell me Chen Rui... have I ever made your heart race? Even once?" He mustered the courage to look at her. He breathed in real slow before saying, "I have always, always loved you... even before we married so tell me, have I ever made you love me even if it's just a little bit?"
A tear rolled down her cheek upon hearing his heartbreaking question.
"I..."
Jin Mingze managed to force out a smile when he saw the look in her face. His smile fell lifeless, allowing his face to return to its usual cold hard gawk. "So you never did, huh?"
