61.9% Tears of Guilt / Chapter 39: Lionade (part 2)

章 39: Lionade (part 2)

"I will need a staff to protect me. I need it to do magic."

"Can you even use magic? You won't need a staff to conjure one either. It's a waste of money."

"You're rich, aren't you? Weren't you like the most famous hero?"

"We need to conserve money if we want to survive!"

"It's just a simple staff, how expensive could it be??"

We both turned to the shop owner, and he awkwardly gave us a number.

"T-Two thousand…"

T-That might be a bit too expensive…

I understood that, but Rake already turned to me angrily.

"Two thousand Jules! You can use it to feed someone for Five Months! You can buy a hundred of those clothes that you just bought! You can--"

"I… get it. I give up."

"Oh."

Dude. Even I know two thousand Jules is just too much…

We both turned to the shop owner, and he could only awkwardly laugh.

"M-Maybe a discount?"

We both left the shop after that.

"You're fond of magic?"

Rake suddenly asked me during the trip, and I hummed.

"I never… got the chance to learn it. My parents don't allow me."

"I see..."

That was it. He didn't continue talking about it, that was just it.

I can tell that he is also a geek of magic, since he is a user of one. And from the way he asked me about it, it led me to a suspicion about him that I have never guessed before.

He doesn't know how to talk to girls.

Someone antisocial like him is famous throughout the entire kingdom. But something tells me that he has been single his entire life.

A-Actually… I'm pretty much like that as well…

Ah, forget it. I'm a princess and a girl, but he's a guy. He could've done whatever he wanted, while I have to stay trapped inside the castle and age finely like a wine so that I'll get married into a powerful noble.

Come to think of it, I've never actually wondered what my life would be if only things would continue. I've been thinking about surviving for so long that I didn't even get the chance to dream even a little bit about the future.

How amazing of a queen I would be… if things had gone normally?

But of course, that question is pointless to be answered. After all, that won't happen. And it will never happen.

What's the point of being a queen or a princess if your people are already dead?

"Are you hungry?"

Rake suddenly asked out of the blue, and he reminded me of a luxury that I have been forgetting for what felt like years now.

Food.

"Yes! I'm very much--Ekhem."

I broke out of character… that is so embarrassing.

We then walked to a nearby restaurant, and ordered the food on the go. I don't have to ask why he ordered it on the go.

To eat, we will need to open our masks. Both of us could not open our faces in public, otherwise it would cause people to freak out.

He has his handsome famous face on the line, while I have my horns. Opening our masks is the same as telling the world where we are, since we are easily noticeable.

So, we sat down at the roof of a building, right above an alley. There's no one below us, and we can eat calmly at the edge of the building.

I'm very scared to sit at the side of the building like that, with my legs hanging. But seeing how Rake did it so calmly, I wanted to try it out as well.

I sat not far from him and ate there as well, with my mask and hood open.

The first time I tried the food--

"Oh… I feel alive, again…"

It feels great. Surviving and staying alive all by yourself while being hunted, taken in as a prisoner, and even getting beaten up by a lot of people… my stomach was dead empty the entire time.

It feels… heavenly to eat street food such as this.

"Don't eat too much. Your stomach is still readjusting, and I can tell it was empty before. You're going to get stomach ache from the sudden arrival of food--"

Well, thank you for ruining my moment.

I continued eating without minding him in silence, and it felt great. Food is something I've been neglecting for so long, that I've forgotten what tasty food was like.

It has been only three days since I last tasted a proper meal like this, and yet I've already forgotten what proper food was like.

After eating, Rake suddenly jumped down.

THUMP!!

He arrived safely at the bottom of the alley, six meters below me.

He lifted his hands up while staring at me. He didn't say a thing, and just lifted his hands towards me.

H-He wanted me to jump…? Straight into him?

… It's not that I don't trust him.

That is also a reason, but the thing was… why?

I'm taking the stairs.

I got up from my position, and I began walking towards the stairs. I already wore my mask and hood, and I walked down to the alley to meet him.

"Why didn't you jump down?"

"I just ate. Forget it."

"R-Right…"

He truly wants me to jump down.

What is wrong with this guy??

We both were about to exit the alley, but then Rake stopped me from exiting. It was rather sudden, and I nearly bumped into him.

"Dude, can you say something when you do anything?"

"Look."

He pointed his other hand towards the center of the plaza, not far from the alley's entrance. Our eyes landed at the group of people currently asking questions in the plaza to a lot of people. We immediately knew who they were, and what questions they were asking.

The knights of Ardjestyn.

We have been sniffed out.
