For a few moments, Gus could do nothing but stare, his mouth open slightly. He found himself thinking back to the past, back to the days when he was at the place where the Evolved were created.
"So, uh, is she the one that you said was the only one you could tolerate?" Connor whispered to Gus. "Because you don't exactly look displeased to see her."
Connor's words fully pulled Gus into the reality of the situation. Immediately, he could feel his face reddening as he realised that most of the eyes in the room were now on him.
"I… yeah. She's that one," Gus murmured in response.
This did not make any sense. None at all. It was the Evolved's singular duty to hold the line against the Bloody Dawn on the borders of human territory, that was the view held by many, including those in the military who would theoretically be in charge of their overall deployments. In truth, Gus had no clue how much freedom one of the Evolved might actually have.
