"Why is Karena always alone? I wonder what happened to her."
"I know! She is such a pit. No mom and dad."
I can clearly hear them talking about me. They always talk about me, about how sad and lonely I am. Sometimes, people talk bad stuff towards me. It does not surprise me really, it does not make me sad either. I don't know how everything makes me feel. I seems like I became emotionless.
I started to feel like this when my mother and father died from a fire that I accidentally started. I thought I put it out because I know mother would be angry but turns out it didn't. I just woke up at a hospital with burns all over my body and with my Auntie Dorothy crying next to me.
She explained everything about what and how it happened. I thought auntie would hate me after finding out it was me who killed her sister but instead she hugged me tight, saying that everything will be okay.
I was confused to what I should feel that very moment. There were anger, sadness, guilt, happy, and other different kind of emotions. I did not do anything but just sat there, staring at the white wall of the hospital room.
"She just passed out from stress..." What is that annoying beeping sound. Wait, what is this familiar smell of ethanol? And who passed out from the stress? Auntie Dorothy?!
I slowly opened my eyes and to see the bright light on the ceiling. "Auntie..." I tried to speak but my mouth's really dry. I need water.
"Kara? She's awake!" I hear my auntie say to someone.
"Karena, please try opening your eyes." An unfamiliar voice spoke and I did what he said. Forcing my eyes to open from the blinding light, I finally see my auntie and man wearing a white lab coat.
"Kara! You're awake! I'm was so worried! Why do you have to pass out while I was peeing!" My auntie sobs, caressing my forehead. Tears can be seen at the corner of her eyes. I look at the man standing beside my auntie.
"Who are you?" I asked, trying to sit up. My auntie helped me then handed me a glass of water. "Thank you."
"Well, I'm Doctor Harrison and I'm glad you're okay now. Please do try not to overstress yourself, dear. You just passed out and been asleep for almost 16 hours." He said in a calm tone. Wait, I passed out? "I need to check the other patient now. I will leave you guys alone now. Just go to the reception to get your prescriptions. Karena, stay safe."
"Thank you doctor" Aunty Dorothy said before the doctor walked out from the room.
I chugged the last amount of water in my glass before I spoke to my auntie. "What happened auntie?" I asked her. She let out a sigh and sat on the chair beside the bed. "When I finish peeing last night, I just saw you laying on the ground unconscious. Kara, I should be asking you that, what happened last night?"
Now that I think about it, what happened last night? My auntie went to pee and told me to take care of the costume-
"Oh my! Did the costumer last night did something to you? The man in the suit? What did he do to you?!" She's bombed with questions with panic in her voice.
Costumer, suit, black...aloe...oh, I passed out because of that small interaction with a handsome man?! This is so lame! I look at my auntie who is waiting for a reply. "He did not do anything to me, auntie." I mean, he gave me palpitations as if I have drank one gallon of caffeine. I grab the pillow from the bed and hid my face with it. My face is getting hot! I need to stop thinking about that man!
"Oh, okay. I just thought he did something funny. Sorry I suspected an innocent man then. But, that's weird why would you pass out?" My auntie got up from the chair, "You have a good healthy diet, trust me I have seen you eat and you have a good sleeping schedule despite your obsession over cartoon books." I can't tell her that I fainted just because I saw an attractive man. No way!
"Maybe because of work? Good Wil's making new designs. Maybe it pressured me." That seems like a legit excuse. I am a bit pressured with the upcoming activities. Hey, that's right, maybe I am stressed because of work and not from that man!
"Oh really? That's great to hear then. I was gonna call my friend she knows a shaman in Brisbane. I thought a bad spirit might be lingering around the shop." I cringe, not this thing again. My auntie believe in that bad and good spirits. She's Filipino and according to her mom, my grandma, there is really stuff like that here in Earth.
"No bad spirits, auntie." I chuckled and that made her frown. "I'm just making sure! You know, last week when I was getting some tea at the middle of the night. I heard someone squealing." What? That's a bit creepy. I may not believe in ghost but they unbelievable stories still scare me.
"Now, that's absurd." I said with a forceful chuckle.
"It's true-" before auntie could finish, the door swung open. Miss Choi? What is she doing here? Kevin, Stacey, Meg, and everyone from work are here! What are they doing here?
"Miss Lopez! How are you?" Miss Choi asked while walking towards me with flowers in her hands. Is that for me?! What?
"Miss Lopez! We heard you passed out! Maybe you need to lose those cute, ugly sweater!" Meg said. Kevin smacked her hand, "I'm sorry about that this silly Meg. She's wrong, you need to lose those stockings." He grinned and I let out a dry laugh. What are they trying to say?
"Enough, you two." I hear Miss Choi, she handed me a bouquet of white lilies. Isn't this what you see in funerals? "How are you, Miss Lopez?" She asked again. Her voice is so calm and sound sophisticated.
"I'm good-"
"Miss Choi insisted we pay you a visit and she even bought you flowers! Isn't she just so nice?" That's true. They shouldn't have. We have lots of work to do. I'm just a burden to them now but I do appreciate Miss Lopez's effort. She is an angel.
"I'm sorry, making you guys come over here.." I said looking down at the flowers. We heard someone cleared their throat. I look up, oh! Right! "Everyone, this is my Auntie Dorothy, she's the one taking care of me." My auntie smiled at them, holding up her hand to shake.
"Oh! So, you're the auntie who took care of our dear Miss Lopez! Pleased to meet you!" Meg said, shaking my auntie's hand.
"Right, the one who took over after Miss Lopez's parents died!" Stacey commented. Everyone went silent, I can feel my auntie's smile disappears from her.
"Anyway, it was pleased to meet you Miss Lopez's auntie but look at the time we have to go. Lots of things to do at Good Wil!" Miss Choi said, breaking the awkward silence. "Right, guys?"
"That's right! We're glad you're okay now Miss Lopez! Bye bye" Meg agreed. "Why do you have to say that?" I hear Meg whisper, grabbing the arms of Kevin and Stacey dragging them out. Miss Choi gave me an apologetic smile before walking out behind them.
"Well, that was something." My auntie stated after letting a out sigh.
I smiled, nodding my head. "Yeah but I'm glad they visited me." I look down at the lilies they gave me. That's what matters, at least they care.
-
"Yes! The smell of lavender is back and cat piss is what I miss in this room!" I stated closing my door behind me.
"Kara! Will you be able to come to the shop tomorrow? Your job's kinda hectic!" My auntie yelled from downstairs, I let go of my bag on the floor and immediately pick my fluffy ginger Main Coon. "Toby! I missed you!" He let out a meow, trying to break free from my grasp. "Okay, okay, here you go." I touched his nose before letting him go,
"Now, let's get to work!" I sat down on my chair in front of desk. I opened my laptop and started writing. I'm a content writer at Good Wil. I've been in the company for almost three years and I'm really grateful for Miss Choi. I wouldn't have got in if it wasn't for her.
I hear a ding from my phone and immediately checked it out.
Oh my! A new update from BJ Alex! I have been blessed! No, I should not. I am working right now but maybe just a little sneak peek, just the first panel. Yes, just the first panel. I pushed my laptop away and grabbed my phone, resting my elbows on the desk.
"Holy cheese! That was such a good chapter Toby!" I squealed picking up my cat then swinging him back and forth, wrapped around my arms. "Team Alex! Team Alex! Toby! We are Team Alex!" I chanted, putting Toby's paw up in the air.
*Ding*
"Oooh what do we have here Toby? A notification! We shall see it!" I put down my cat and look at my phone. An ad?
