The rumble that filled the hangar grew louder, vibrating through the floor beneath their feet. Everyone instinctively raised their weapons, their mechas shifting into defensive stances. The massive doors at the far end of the hangar creaked open slowly, revealing a shadowy figure beyond.
"Whatever's coming through that door, it's huge," Vega muttered, gripping her controls tightly.
Scarface's voice crackled through the comms. "Get ready. That's no welcoming party."
As the doors fully opened, the team braced for an attack—but what stepped into the light was not what they expected.
The colossal figure was covered in moss and vines, its joints stiff and creaking as it moved. The metallic frame gleamed faintly beneath layers of dirt and plant life, hinting at its age. It stood at least ten times taller than their mechas, its towering form casting a massive shadow over the hangar.
"What the hell is that thing?" Wolfe asked, his tone a mix of awe and apprehension.
Techie's voice was hurried as he analyzed the readings on his HUD. "It's... a mecha. Or at least it used to be. Ancient, though. This thing hasn't been operational in centuries."
Captain studied the massive machine, her brow furrowed. "It doesn't look like it's fully active. Is it a threat?"
Ace tilted his head, his gaze fixed on the giant. "If it's old and broken down, why would it be locked behind such a massive door? This thing was important to someone."
The ancient mecha took another slow, lumbering step, the sound of grinding metal echoing through the space. It didn't seem hostile, but its sheer size was intimidating enough to put everyone on edge.
"Techie," Captain said, her voice firm, "is there a way to interact with it? Can we control it?"
Techie scanned the area, his eyes darting over his holographic interface. "There's a central access point near its chest. But..." He hesitated.
"But what?" Captain pressed.
"It's not designed for normal entry," Techie explained. "The only way to interface with it is through another mecha. Someone would have to physically pilot one of our mechas into the access hatch."
All eyes turned to Ace.
He sighed, already knowing what was coming. "Why is it always me?"
A Leap of Faith
The group formed a protective perimeter around the ancient mecha as Ace maneuvered his smaller unit toward it. The closer he got, the more details he could make out. Its exterior was a mix of sleek alien alloys and rough patches of nature, giving it an otherworldly yet organic appearance.
"Be careful," Shadow said through the comms. "We don't know if this thing has any automated defenses."
"Thanks for the encouragement," Ace replied dryly, his voice masking his nerves.
He guided his mecha upward, using the ancient machine's massive limbs as climbing points. The journey was precarious, each step requiring precision and balance. The vines and moss made the surface slippery, but his mecha's enhanced grip held firm.
"Almost there," Techie said, monitoring his progress. "The access hatch should be just above the left shoulder."
Ace reached the designated area and found a circular panel partially obscured by vegetation. He extended one of his mecha's arms and began clearing the debris.
"Looks like a manual override," Ace said, examining the panel. "Old-school tech. Give me a second."
He manipulated the controls, and after a few tense moments, the hatch hissed open, revealing a glowing interface within.
The Awakening
As Ace interfaced his mecha with the ancient one, the entire structure began to hum with life. Lights flickered on across its massive frame, and the ground beneath the team trembled.
"What's happening?" Vega asked, her voice tinged with panic.
Techie's eyes widened as new data flooded his screens. "It's... moving."
The ancient mecha's limbs began to shift, dislodging centuries of dirt and foliage. Its massive head turned slightly, the faint glow of its eyes intensifying.
"Hold your ground!" Captain ordered, her voice cutting through the rising tension. "No one fires unless it attacks first."
Ace's voice came through the comms, strained but controlled. "It's not attacking. It's... waking up."
From his position inside the ancient mecha, Ace could see a sprawling array of controls and readouts. The interface was advanced yet intuitive, guiding him through the process of reactivating the machine.
"This isn't just a mecha," Ace said, his tone filled with awe. "It's a fortress. A moveable base."
The realization hit the team like a wave.
"Wait," Wolfe said, his voice incredulous. "You're telling me this thing is a walking building?"
"More like a walking city," Techie corrected, his hands flying over his controls as he analyzed the data. "Its internal systems are massive—weapon bays, supply depots, living quarters. And... oh, wow."
"What?" Captain asked.
"It has long-range artillery. Enough firepower to level entire regions," Techie explained.
The ancient mecha took another step, the ground quaking beneath its weight. From within, Ace could feel the immense power of the machine, a fusion of advanced technology and raw strength.
"We can use this," Captain said, her mind already working through the possibilities. "If we can fully control it, this changes everything."
"But it's old," Ace cautioned. "Some of its systems are offline, and the ones that are functional are barely holding together. It's going to take a lot of work to get it battle-ready."
Techie nodded. "Still, it's a game-changer. We've got a mobile base now. A stronghold."
The Horizon Ahead
As the ancient mecha settled into a standing position, the team regrouped at its base. The atmosphere was charged with a mix of excitement and uncertainty.
"This thing's a beast," Scarface said, staring up at the towering structure. "But it's going to attract attention. Big attention."
Captain nodded. "Agreed. We need to move quickly and secure it. Techie, focus on getting its systems online. Everyone else, stay alert. We're sitting ducks until we get this thing fully operational."
Ace stepped out of his smaller mecha, his face flushed with exhaustion but lit with determination. "We've got a shot now," he said. "A real shot at surviving this."
As the team prepared to fortify their newfound stronghold, the jungle around them remained eerily quiet. But somewhere in the distance, unseen eyes watched their every move.
For now, the ancient mecha was theirs. But the fight to control it—and the secrets it held—was only beginning.
