Chapter 62: Selection Concludes
In truth, most of the demons brought to Fujikasane Mountain by the Demon Slayer Corps are relatively weak, making them suitable for training new recruits. There are few demons like the Hand Demon, which gained strength by devouring many of its kind. Such occurrences are rare and difficult for the Demon Slayer Corps to predict.
On the second day of the final selection, Makomo woke up, but her legs were temporarily paralyzed due to her injuries.
During the demon hunt in Fujikasane Mountain, Chu Yang carried her the entire time.
However, even with someone on his back, his movements were not affected in the slightest.
It was then that Makomo realized the true extent of Chu Yang's power.
Fighting demons alone and fighting demons while carrying someone are two completely different things.
This demonstrated that Chu Yang's strength was on a completely different level compared to the demons in the mountain and the other young swordsmen participating in the selection.
By the seventh day, Chu Yang began descending the mountain with Makomo.
When he reached the torii gate halfway down, he noticed that more people had survived than he had anticipated.
Most of the swordsmen who participated in the selection survived, thanks to Chu Yang. However, many of them chose to leave, also because of Chu Yang.
The more powerful demons were all killed by Chu Yang, so for the others, these seven days were more like an ordinary survival exercise.
Many of them had witnessed Chu Yang slaughtering demons firsthand.
When they saw this monstrous boy again, their expressions became very complicated.
There was fear, dread, awe, and gratitude.
No matter which emotion dominated, their eyes were always focused on Chu Yang.
Chu Yang didn't care how they viewed him. He didn't even bother to look at them, walking straight toward the official who hosted the selection.
The young swordsmen made way for him, drawing the host's attention, who then gave Chu Yang a meaningful glance.
Chu Yang gently placed Makomo on the ground and said aloud, "Please send this girl to the Butterfly Mansion. Her legs are injured and need treatment."
As soon as he spoke, a member of the Kakushi division stepped forward, took Makomo from Chu Yang, and provided her with emergency treatment.
"I heard that you almost wiped out all the demons in the mountain by yourself?" The host teased with a smirk, "Thanks to you, many people passed the trial without actually being trained, and now the Demon Slayer Corps is flooded with useless fresh blood."
Chu Yang sneered and retorted, "Most of them will die anyway, but sooner is better than later. Instead of dying here in seven days, it's better they survive a bit longer and take a few demons down with them before they die."
"Honestly, I don't understand why you rush to send these inexperienced swordsmen here to die. Rather than calling it a selection, it's more like you're feeding the demons in the mountain."
"This is a stupid and irresponsible method of selection."
The trainers could have helped these newcomers accumulate more experience in battling demons, but they never do. Instead, they throw novices who only know breathing techniques into an extreme survival situation.
If they want to test them, they should at least wait until the participants have some combat experience!
Chu Yang's dangerous statements made the host's face change, as the final selection was a tradition passed down by the heads of the Demon Slayer Corps. His words were a direct attack on the Ubuyashiki family.
The host warned Chu Yang sternly, "Didn't your trainer tell you not to speak recklessly?"
"Every demon in Fujikasane Mountain was carefully selected by us to be suitable for novice combat. If they can't survive this trial, it just proves they're not strong enough to become members of the Demon Slayer Corps."
"Heh~" Chu Yang smirked, mimicking the host's earlier expression and said, "There was a demon in there that ate fifty of its own kind and killed over a dozen swordsmen during the selection. How strong do you think it was?"
The host was stunned. Judging from Chu Yang's expression, he wasn't lying. If such a demon existed, it must have at least been a powerful demon capable of using Blood Demon Arts.
Most of the swordsmen who entered were indeed just feeding this monster.
But then, the host's expression grew resolute as he replied firmly, "Once they officially become members of the Demon Slayer Corps, such situations will be countless. Most of the time, we fight demons stronger than ourselves."
"Ever since demons appeared thousands of years ago, it has always been this way. We have no choice..."
His words made Chu Yang see him in a new light. Upon reflection, it was true.
For a long time, every member of the Demon Slayer Corps fought with this kind of resolve.
Although Chu Yang admired this spirit, he still believed the selection method was foolish. There were clearly better ways to train new recruits.
After a brief silence, the host didn't continue arguing with Chu Yang but instead turned to address the others: "Since the number of survivors this time exceeds the usual average, we don't have enough ore or Kasugai crows for everyone, so your right to choose is revoked."
The crowd erupted in protest.
"You should understand why you managed to survive the final selection..." The host's cold gaze swept over the crowd, silencing them with his overwhelming presence.
"However, not everyone will lose their right to choose." The host changed his tone and looked at Chu Yang. "Based on your performance, your right to choose remains intact."
Chu Yang grinned, thrusting his massive horse-slaying saber into the ground. The immense power made the earth tremble, causing the crowd to shudder as well.
"Do you have ore that big?" Chu Yang pointed at the horse-slaying saber and said bluntly, "If not, I'll just keep this sword. It's still technically a weapon of the Demon Slayer Corps."
After the battle in Fujikasane Mountain, Chu Yang had grown familiar with the weight and size of the horse-slaying saber, wielding it with increasing ease. If he were to switch weapons suddenly, he would need time to adjust.
To Chu Yang's surprise, the host readily agreed to his bold request, leaving him slightly taken aback. He had expected a verbal battle.
The host's response to Chu Yang's astonishment was simple: "This is a privilege for the talented. The only goal of the Demon Slayer Corps is to eliminate all demons. To achieve that, we won't hesitate to use any resources necessary."
As soon as he finished, the host whistled, and a dark figure swooped down from the sky, landing on Chu Yang's shoulder—a gray-eyed crow.
"This is your Kasugai crow. It will handle communications with the Demon Slayer Corps and deliver information about demons."
Chu Yang gently stroked the crow on his shoulder. From now on, this little creature would be responsible for providing information on the location of demons.
Thus, the final selection concluded with an unprecedented turn of events.
