章 7: Chapter 7: Shadows of the Past

Colonel Zhang sat alone in his dimly lit quarters, the flickering candle casting long shadows on the walls. His gaze was fixed on an old military medal, a relic from a time when honor and duty had meant something to him. Those days were long gone. Now, the world had changed, and so had Zhang. His mind drifted back to the events that had shaped him into the man he was today—a man feared by many, respected by few, and truly known by none.

Born into a prestigious military family, Zhang's early life was marked by relentless discipline. His father, General Zhang, was a man of iron will, whose expectations were as unforgiving as the battlefield. From a young age, Zhang was groomed to follow in his father's footsteps, and he excelled in his training, showing a natural talent for strategy and combat. But as he climbed the ranks, Zhang's ambition began to eclipse his sense of duty.

During a particularly brutal campaign, Zhang had orchestrated a coup against a superior officer, a move that was meant to catapult him into a position of supreme power. However, the coup failed, and Zhang was left to face the consequences. Disgraced and demoted, he became a pariah within the military, his once-promising career in tatters. It was in this state of disgrace that Zhang's outlook on life changed drastically. He no longer saw the military as a force for order and justice; instead, he saw it as a tool to be manipulated for personal gain.

When the demon gates opened, plunging the world into chaos, Zhang saw an opportunity. In the midst of societal collapse, he could rebuild his power—this time, not bound by the outdated notions of honor and duty. It was during this time that he encountered Dr. Liang, a former military scientist with a reputation for conducting experiments that had been deemed too inhumane even for wartime.

Dr. Liang was a man of science, but his thirst for knowledge had long since crossed the boundaries of ethics. His experiments, once focused on advancing human capabilities, had turned into grotesque attempts to merge human and demon physiology. When Zhang first met Liang, the scientist had already gone underground, continuing his work in secret. Zhang, seeing the potential in Liang's research, offered him protection and resources in exchange for results.

One evening, in the dimly lit laboratory hidden deep within the ruins of an old military base, Zhang met with Dr. Liang. The scientist was hunched over a table, examining a bloodied specimen jar that contained what appeared to be a hybrid demon organ.

"Is it ready?" Zhang's voice was cold and commanding, his eyes narrowed as he looked at the unsettling specimen.

Liang didn't look up, his focus still on the organ. "Ready? No. But close," he muttered, his eyes gleaming with an unsettling mix of obsession and madness. "This one... it's different. The mana reaction is stronger. If we can stabilize the fusion process, we might finally achieve what we've been aiming for."

Zhang stepped closer, his gaze fixed on the grotesque organ. "You've been saying that for weeks, Liang. I need results, not promises."

Liang finally turned to face Zhang, a sly grin spreading across his face. "Patience, Colonel. What we're attempting here... it's unprecedented. But I assure you, when it's complete, you'll have an army unlike anything the world has ever seen."

Zhang's expression remained cold. "And the map? Have you deciphered any more of it?"

Liang nodded, pulling out a large, ancient scroll from a drawer. The scroll was covered in cryptic symbols, some of which had been painstakingly translated. "It's slow work, but I'm beginning to understand the patterns. This map, it's not just a location—it's a key. Whatever lies at the end of this trail, it's going to change everything."

Zhang studied the map for a moment, his mind racing with possibilities. The map was unlike anything he had ever seen—an ancient relic that seemed to defy time. "Good. Keep working. And make sure there are no more... accidents. We can't afford to lose more subjects."

Liang chuckled darkly. "Don't worry, Colonel. The next batch will be more resilient. They won't fail."

As Zhang left the laboratory, his mind was already on the future. He knew that whatever secrets the map held, they were the key to unlocking a power beyond imagination. But Zhang was not a man who believed in destiny—he was a man who made his own. And he was determined that when the time came, he would be the one holding all the cards.

Meanwhile, Zhang couldn't help but think of the survivors under his control. He had already begun selecting the most vulnerable among them for Dr. Liang's experiments. It was a necessary evil, Zhang told himself, a sacrifice that would ensure his eventual rise to power. The weak would perish, and the strong would prevail. That was the new law of the world, and Zhang intended to be its enforcer.

As Zhang walked through the corridors of the base, his thoughts darkened. He could feel the weight of his past, the ghosts of the men and women who had died because of his ambitions. But there was no turning back now. Zhang had made his choices, and he would see them through to the end, no matter the cost.

His footsteps echoed in the empty hallways as he approached the holding cells, where the latest batch of test subjects was being kept. He paused outside one of the cells, where a young woman was huddled in the corner, her eyes wide with fear. Zhang stared at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, without a word, he turned and walked away.

"Soon," he whispered to himself. "Soon, everything will fall into place."
