Chapter 19
Arriving at the Capital
Three days later, they arrived at the Capital of the Aglioso State formerly known as the Holy Capital of Aglioso.
After many failed holy crusades to bring the Seven Gods' religion to the rest of the continent, the priests and cardinals ended up losing power and religion became a lot less prominent in the state.
Also, when magic users like the firsts Magus started to appear. People realized that the 'holy' magic didn't have much of 'holy' and it was just manipulation of the elements by the use of mana.
Nowadays, there are still a few churches that pray to the Seven Gods but they have a hard time finding believers among the populace.
Siegfried never had the chance to visit this city, or any of the other former Kingdoms in the past, so He could not tell how much it has changed since the times when it was called the Holy Kingdom.
But He was quite impressed by the city. Not only was the city immense, with four entrances, one on each cardinal point, but it was also clean and well-maintained despite the number of people going all around it.
"Not bad, uh?" Said, Augustus.
"Yes, it's a beautiful city." Admitted Siegfried.
"Yes, it is. Of course, you are now seeing the best part of it. We are currently traveling via the main road of the city called the Golden Road. This passes through the main market, the Great General palace, the Magus Academy, and many other important places. The further away you go from this road, the murkier everything gets."
"I see." He understood that it was normal for big cities to have good and bad neighborhoods. Not even the capital of his former Kingdom was perfect.
"It is said that you should judge a city for its worst part, not the best one," Augustus advised.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
They arrived at the Magus Academy grounds. The place was surrounded by high walls like a fortress, with many tall towers inside made from ivory stone.
Outside the main gate were two long lines of young people and at the end of those lines were big white tents with people going in and out.
"This is as far as we can accompany you, Sieg." Augustus pointed at one of the lines.
"That is the line for nobles. Once you get to the end, give them your name and they will take you to the test. I'm sure you can take it from there."
"Yes. Thank you, Mister Augustus." Siegfried gave the Magus a nod of respect.
"Milord." Called his butler Albert. "We will be staying in the city for a week since Mister Augustus has some business here. If for some reason you change your mind and want to go back, we will be staying in the Silver Mare hotel."
"I am not changing my mind, Albert. But thank you anyways." Siegfried looked at Ser Douglas.
"Ser Douglas" He gave him a nod.
"Milord." The knight bowed. "I can't wait to see how strong you will become."
After leaving the group, Siegfried went to get in line.
'It seems like we are going to be here for a while.'
Around forty minutes later. Siegfried had made it close to the tent when He heard a commotion at the back.
"What are you, deaf? I told you to make way!"
Siegfried looked back and saw two boys confronting someone short teen with black hair who refuse to move from his stop. It was obvious that the two guys wanted to cut in line. One of them was big and bulky like a gorilla while the other one was average-looking with long hair tied in a ponytail.
"I was here first. Why should I move?" The short teen demanded to know.
"This here!" The big guy pointed at a very elegant dressed handsome young man behind him.
"Is Charles Artois. Heir of the High-Rank Noble family of Artois. You really expect him to wait in line like all of these low-rank nobles?" He said while giving the shot guy a look of disgust.
"Just because I'm from a low-rank family doesn't mean you get to step over me! We are all the same once we enter the academy!" The short guy defended.
Siegfried was sure that most people waiting in line would agree with that statement. After all, most noble families in the state are low-rank. There are only three High-Rank families, not counting the Great General family, and twenty-two middle-rank ones. The rest, over one hundred noble families were low-rank.
But, no matter how much they could agree with him. No one was going to move a finger to help him. Offending one of the three High-rank families or the Great Generals one, was not something many dared to do. After all, those families were influential enough to make your life a living hell if they really wanted to.
The big guy seemed to have lost his patience and decide to push the short young man aside with a resounding slap.
People gasped as the short guy was sent flying with a single slap.
Siegfried hears a couple of girls murmur something.
"He must be from the Garret family." One of the girls said.
"Those brutes!" The other said with a disapproving frown.
'Garret, uh?. Makes sense then.'
He has memorized the names of all middle and high-rank noble families, along with some facts about them.
The Garret family were earth magic users who created spells that can enhance their bodies so they can fight up close. Something that earned the disapproval of many noble families who believe in melee combat as something beneath an Official Magus, better left for warriors and knights.
The short man struggle to get up from the ground and then used his hand to cover his bleeding lip while giving the big guy a baleful glare.
The big guy chuckled.
"My name is Arthur Garret. If you want to get revenge, go ahead and challenge me once you are inside. I will never turn down a good fight!"
He then looked at the other people in line.
"Well, are you going to move or should I slap my way through?"
They all moved, allowing Garret to pass with Charles Artois following behind.
