章 11: Chris Columbus

As John Hughes embarked on a new chapter of his career, the ever-bustling city of Chicago once again filled him with inspiration. Every corner of the city unveiled a new layer of charm, from the quaint suburban streets to the shimmering downtown skyline. But this time, John's vision wasn't for another coming-of-age drama—he had a different story to tell, one that was lighthearted, family-friendly, and full of adventure. His script was practically bursting with potential, but now he needed the perfect director to bring it to life.

Sitting in a cozy café in Hollywood, John sat across from his good friend, the talented director Chris Columbus. Over the years, their friendship had blossomed, not just from their shared passion for filmmaking, but from their shared values. Both believed in the power of stories that could capture the imagination of children while still resonating with adults.

John slid the script across the table to Chris.

John Hughes: "Chris, I've got something here that I think is right up your alley."

Chris picked up the script, flipping through the first few pages. A soft smile crept onto his face. He could already feel the warmth of the story unfolding, the humor, and the subtle touches of heart that John had always been known for.

Chris Columbus: "Family-friendly, I assume?"

John chuckled and nodded. "You know me. I've been wanting to take a break from my usual, and this... this is it. I want you to direct it."

Chris looked up, surprised. While they had often tossed ideas back and forth, this was the first time John had come to him with something so complete, so fully-formed.

Chris Columbus: "Me? Why me? You've directed plenty of your own scripts. Why hand this one over?"

John Hughes leaned forward, his voice warm and full of confidence. "Chris, you're the best when it comes to family-friendly movies. No one else can balance humor, heart, and adventure quite like you. I've written this script with someone in mind, and I know you're the one who can bring it to life in the way it deserves."

Chris raised an eyebrow, intrigued by his friend's enthusiasm. "Who's it about?"

John leaned back, a nostalgic smile playing on his lips. "There's this kid from my community, Justin. He's smart, always smiling, and brings joy wherever he goes. I kind of based the main character on him. But in the story, I changed things up a bit. Unlike Justin, the lead in the script—Kevin—he's a troublemaker, the kind of kid everyone misunderstands. You see, Kevin's constantly getting into situations that aren't really his fault, but it makes for great comedy."

Chris could see John's excitement as he spoke about the script. He understood now why John was passing this one to him.

John Hughes: "Look, Chris, you're not just a good director. You understand kids, how they think, how they feel. You're able to bring out their best on screen, and that's what this movie needs. It's a story that's going to make people laugh, sure, but it's also going to have heart. It's got potential to become something big—maybe even more than one movie."

Chris flipped to the last page of the script and closed it gently, impressed by the depth of the story even in its simplicity.

Chris Columbus: "Sounds like it's got everything. But what about casting? I assume you're not looking for a big child star?"

John Hughes: "Exactly. I don't want to go with any of the big names. I want someone fresh, someone who embodies the character without the baggage of stardom."

Chris nodded. "I agree. We'll hold auditions, find the right kid. It might take some time, but it's worth it."

John grinned, pleased with Chris's enthusiasm. "I've even got a suggestion. There's this kid, Justin. He's not an actor yet, but he's got this spark. Reminds me of when I first started out—just raw potential. We should give him a shot."

Chris smiled. "I trust your instincts, John. If you say Justin's got potential, I'll take a look."

As they continued discussing the project, their excitement grew. Chris could already envision how he'd bring John's vision to life. With a $20 million budget on the line, it was a lot of pressure, but Chris knew they could make something magical together. John's confidence in his directing and the script was contagious.

Chris Columbus: "This is going to be great. Family-friendly, potential for sequels, and with your name on it, we're set. I'll take this to the studio, get the ball rolling. With the right team, we'll make something that's not just good—it's going to be unforgettable."

John Hughes smiled, knowing that he had made the right choice in Chris. Their collaboration wasn't just a business decision; it was a meeting of two creative minds, ready to make something special.

With funding secured and the backing of the studio, Chris Columbus dove into the project with renewed passion. Together with John, they worked tirelessly to bring the film to life, from casting to set design, each step drawing them closer to a family-friendly masterpiece. They knew this wasn't just a movie—it was the start of something bigger. And with a great script, a talented director, and the perfect lead actor on the horizon, their dream was ready to take the world by storm.

However, just as everything seemed to be falling into place, the biggest problem was their main lead role. The lead actor had not auditioned any kid for this lead role. They decided to hold casting in Los Angeles, where they would invite many child actors who were not famous but talented in acting. They didn't want any child stars because of the high salaries they would have to give to child stars.

As auditions were held across Los Angeles, Chris and his team sifted through a sea of hopefuls, searching for someone who could embody the spirit of the character and bring it to life on screen. Days turned into weeks as they scoured the city in search of the elusive talent they so desperately needed.

Finally, just when all seemed lost, Chris Columbus himself recommended a boy named Justin for the audition. With Chris's endorsement, the casting director decided to give Justin a chance.

You see, the head scriptwriter and owner of film company who wrote the story was from Justin's community. The head writer, named John Hughes, was inspired by Justin when he found Justin to be a very smart kid who always smiled and brought joy to people.

In this story, he changed some settings. Everyone in the story disliked Kevin for many reasons, such as being a troublemaker and always complaining about something. Whereas Justin was loved by everyone, so he decided to change some settings from real life. He also did not add Justin's love for music because it would only complicate the story. It only says Justin likes listening to music, that's all.

During this time, John Hughes approached Chris Columbus.

John: "chriw, can you come here to talk about something?" he said in a small voice.

Chris, even though he had big problems, was always cool-headed when solving them. He is famous for his kindness in Hollywood.

Chris came near John: "What is it you want to say?"

John: "It's related to the main lead problem. I have something to say."

Chris, when he heard that it was something related to the main lead: "Yes, I am listening."

John: "You see, I did tell you that movie story was inspired by a kid in our community. He is the smartest kid I ever met. I thought of writing a story based on my imagination of him right. So I was thinking about we make him main lead."

Chris: "Why didn't you say that earlier? It would have helped so much, man."

John: "Well, first, he is not an actor. Second, I didn't want to put this kid as the main lead because many people would think I was taking advantage by adding this kid as the main lead."

Chris: "You are right. There will be many problems if you want this kid as the main lead. It makes a difference for you, but since you recommend this kid, I want to see him at an audition."

John: "You see, sir, I want you to go to our community where you can see if this kid is suitable for this role. If you think he is suitable for this role, you can recommend him to everyone."

Chris: "Ummm, fine, I'll go with you. How much time does it take to reach your community?"

John: "Around 30 minutes."

Both John and Chris got into Chris's car.

Meanwhile, back to Justin...

It just so happened to be summer vacation, a two to three-month holiday. He goes to the studio to learn more music production from Max.

During this time, Justin will write some songs with the help of Max, a veteran songwriter, and many other people. It was during this time that Scooter recommended Justin start an acting career, to appear in many small movies, gain some fans, and release an album during that time.

This was a very good plan because many singers like Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, and Ariana Grande started from kids' shows. After gaining some fame, they signed with big labels or bands to make music.

This kind of thing has low chances because you have to be in a popular TV show or movie and have talent in the music industry.

Even if you have fans, labels won't listen if your songs aren't hits.

I also supported this idea but scooter also recommended not joining any Nickelodeon TV kid show because they are infamous for children being sexually abused. Disney Company is also infamous for controlling children by not allowing any parents on the set, also paying pennies to kids even after earning millions of dollars.

So, Justin didn't want to join any of these companies. But he would appear in many small movies. With knowledge of the future, he joined the Harry Potter movie as a side character or collaborated with many upcoming artists like Britney Spears, she will released a new albumin the future that will make Britney Spears famous. Max wrote the most famous song on the album, "...Baby One More Time," which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 17 on November 21, 1998. He also wrote many famous songs for the Backstreet Boys, a popular band from the 1990s to 2000s. Justin used connections from Max only after the plan failed.

Justin was ohhh of luck because when he wanted a movie to gain fame, the movie came to him, like Justin take this movie by snaping in the face in Justin imagination this movie will give him a big break.

Justin found out that the movie "Home Alone" was not made due to the butterfly effect after his rebirth. It turned out that the writer and investor of the movie was his neighbor in the community.

Like that, Justin was offered the biggest commercial success movie for family-friendly Christmas entertainment by some random luck.

Chris was impressed by the kid named Justin, who appeared to be a very confident kid. This kid didn't even need to act, just play the character as himself.

Like that, Justin took the biggest step to dominate the movie and music industry.

After some time, Chris gave a business card to Scooter, Justin's manager, who managed all business-related matters for Justin. Scooter took care of Justin, dropping him home from the studio. Scooter even rented an apartment in Justin's community because all the trouble he went through to drop and leave was too much. For convenience, he rented an apartment in Justin's community.

Chris Columbus encouraged Justin, saying, "This is your opportunity to be in the movie, kid. Do your best in the audition."

Impressed by Justin's natural talent in acting, Chris Columbus made the decision to cast him as the main lead in "Home Alone."
