章 93: Chapter 93: The Start of the End-of-Term Practical Exam
U.A. High School's end-of-term exam had Class A and Class B students teamed up together for a mixed practical test. Even though the school had plenty of areas for combat, there were still a lot of students—21 pairs in total.
While homeroom teachers Aizawa-sensei and Vlad King wouldn't interfere in the exam directly, they were overseeing things as proctors to make sure nothing went wrong. Given the number of students, even with teachers like "Thirteen," "Ghost," and "Sniper" also helping as proctors, it wasn't possible for all the students to take the test at once.
So, the students were split into smaller groups to take their turns in the exam. Midoriya and Shinso's team, either by luck or not, ended up being scheduled for the very last round.
With plenty of time before their turn, Midoriya Izuku explained to Shinso Hitoshi about their opponent, Togata Mirio's Quirk and fighting style. Midoriya was quite familiar with Mirio, having gone on missions together and seen his overwhelming power firsthand. Beating Mirio head-on wasn't realistic.
Thankfully, Shinso was his teammate. Mirio-senpai's physical immunity Quirk was almost like a perfect counter to Shinso's "Brainwashing" ability.
With the teams and opponents assigned, the practical exam officially began.
Class A and Class B teams faced off against the third-year seniors in multiple simultaneous matches.
"Todoroki's team is up against Hado-senpai?"
In the exam waiting room, Midoriya Izuku and the other students who hadn't gone yet watched the live feed of each match on screens showing views from various exam areas.
Midoriya focused on Todoroki Shoto's match because his opponent was Hado Nejire, one of the "Big Three" of U.A., a title shared with Mirio-senpai.
"I wonder how strong Hado-senpai is."
Todoroki Shoto was considered the top student in their grade. Midoriya had managed to beat him in the sports festival, partly due to luck. Now, the strongest first-year, Todoroki Shoto, was up against one of the strongest third-years, Hado Nejire. Midoriya was looking forward to the match.
The camera switched to Todoroki's exam field, which was set up as a "city street," similar to the entrance exam field. High above, the third-year senior looked down at the first-year students.
"She can fly…"
Watching Hado Nejire hovering in the air, Todoroki Shoto carefully analyzed her Quirk. Thanks to Midoriya, he'd gotten to know Togata Mirio and learned about the "Big Three" at U.A., of which Hado Nejire was a member.
As for Hado Nejire's abilities, Todoroki only knew her Quirk was called "Hado," though he didn't fully understand its effects. One thing was clear: Hado-senpai could create whirlwinds…
Back during the support class activity, it was Hado-senpai's gust that had blown up Midoriya's sardine bombs… Todoroki, having been affected by it himself, knew this part all too well.
"Hehehe~ even though you're adorable underclassmen, I won't go easy on you~!"
With a bright, childlike smile, Hado Nejire aimed her right hand at Todoroki and Shiozaki on the ground. A powerful whirlwind surged straight toward them.
"So, that's how it is!"
Planting his foot on the ground, Todoroki Shoto created a thick ice wall in front of himself and Shiozaki. The whirlwind slammed into the ice, held firmly at bay, and Todoroki quickly figured out the nature of Hado-senpai's Quirk.
"The tornado… it's created by Hado. And her ability to float must be from the same power."
Just like a helicopter's rotors, Hado spins the air to lift herself up and create whirlwinds that she can use to attack.
Meanwhile, quiet as usual, Shiozaki prepared her own attack on Hado while Todoroki defended against her tornado. Even though Hado Nejire was floating in the air, far out of reach of her "vines," Shiozaki wasn't about to underestimate her plant's vitality.
They were in the "city," so her vines climbed up the buildings, reaching an ideal height before striking toward Hado Nejire like snakes.
"Haha~~ don't underestimate your senior!"
With a single motion, Hado generated another whirlwind with her spiraling hands, knocking down all the vines, ruining Shiozaki's attack.
As Shiozaki's vines were blown away, Todoroki Shoto took the opportunity to shoot flames at Hado floating above. However, Hado used the same whirlwind technique to scatter the flames apart.
Seeing Todoroki's less-than-direct approach, Hado Nejire pouted.
"Geez, you're not cute at all! But why didn't you just follow up with more fire? You might have caught me off guard!"
"Shiozaki's vines would catch fire. I don't want her to get hurt."
"…Todoroki!"
Hearing his reason, Shiozaki was deeply touched. He really was Class A's prince… her heart fluttered.
"Then, Hado-senpai, watch out!"
With a warning, Todoroki Shoto stomped the ground, summoning the huge ice mountain he'd used before during the sports festival. To deal with Hado hovering high up, only an attack like this would do.
The giant ice mountain shot up quickly, but it was still too slow to reach Hado Nejire in the sky. She simply used a quick blast of air to push herself out of range.
"Haha, that's a strong move, but my cute underclassman already warned me, so it would be pretty embarrassing to get hit!"
Feeling a bit smug, Hado was determined to show her underclassmen the authority of a third-year senior.
Todoroki's massive ice mountain filled the area with mist, cloaking Hado Nejire's view from above. To avoid any sneak attacks, she used a whirlwind to blow away the frozen mist, only to find…
No one was there!
As Hado Nejire widened her view, she saw Todoroki Shoto pulling Shiozaki along and almost out of the combat area's exit.
According to Aizawa-sensei's pass criteria, if both students could escape, they'd earn 60 points and pass.
With his careful and steady nature, Todoroki abandoned the idea of defeating Hado after seeing that attacks were ineffective. The huge ice mountain was just a distraction; as Hado dodged it and the mist provided cover, he took the chance to grab the confused Shiozaki and make a run for it.
"Ugh! Cheaters!!"
Frustrated, Hado Nejire watched as her first-year underclassmen, who had seemed ready for a head-on fight, had suddenly fled. These first-years really weren't cute at all.
Hado Nejire was furious, and the consequences were serious!
She landed on the ground and slammed her hand down, causing the entire battle arena to shake violently.
"What's going on, Todoroki?!"
Just as Todoroki and Shiozaki were about to reach the exit of the battle area, the ground began shaking so badly they almost fell. Then something even scarier happened: the ground around them cracked and collapsed, creating a chaotic scene like an earthquake.
"Could it be…?!"
Looking back, Todoroki Shoto noticed Hado Nejire with her hand on the ground and instantly understood. No wonder she was part of the "U.A. Big Three"—she hadn't even shown her full strength at the beginning. Nejire's spiral Quirk, "Hado," could create tornadoes in the air and earthquakes on the ground.
