章 9: From Oblivion to Remembrance

Anthony and Julian stepped into the dark woods, feeling a chill creep through their bodies. The air was alive with eerie whispers from hidden creatures that felt almost like ghostly voices. An oppressive silence weighed heavily over the forest and seemed to swallow any sound their feet could make as they traveled further on.

Shadows danced around them, playing games with their frightened minds until each step became more labored than the last. Twigs snapped beneath their feet, while the occasional hoot of an owl or cry of a fox scraped across the night sky in response.

The trees loomed above them like sentinels standing guard, blocking out even moonlight from passing through their tall forms. A howl resonated through the air, piercing their souls and filling them with an ominous dread.

The air around them became still as they finally stopped in their tracks. He turned to Julian, a look of dread on his face. "Did you hear that?" he asked urgently. Julian nodded slowly, an expression of shock etched into his features. Despite the silence of the woods surrounding them, a single howl had pierced through it and sent a chill down both men's spines.

He swallowed hard as he cautiously asked if there were any other signs of life in this cursed place, any sound or a hint of movement beyond the shadows. Julian nodded solemnly and moved closer to him, their arms brushing against one another as they glanced uneasily around them.

The howls grew fainter and further in between, creating a stifling sense of fear in the air. He stopped abruptly and looked towards the north. He pointed at the entrance of a cave that lay hidden amidst the trees and bushes, claiming that it was from here where the mournful cries were coming from.

Suddenly, he heard the loud cries of an animal coming from a nearby thicket, almost like it was being torn apart. With a mixture of curiosity and caution, they approached closer to investigate. The noise suddenly stopped as soon as they reached the edge of the bushes. Peering into its depths revealed only darkness, until two red eyes glowed ominously at them from within shadows.

The fowl beast was standing before him, growling menacingly. Without warning, it suddenly launched towards him, its claws outstretched and teeth bared. Reacting on instinct, he raised his hands and shouted a holy protection incantation that echoed off the walls of the room; miraculously, it seemed to work! The creature screeched in pain as an unseen force pushed against its form.

He gasped as the beast lay on the ground shaking and twisting in pain. Its menacing growls echoed through the clearing, and between them came a soft plea, barely audible, "save me." Taking a step closer to it, he kneeled by its side. He had recited those ancient words with courage unlike he'd ever before known; his spell seemed to have worked.

He was surprised to see the response of the beast before him. It had stopped its writhing and quieted down, as though his words were working some sort of ancient magic. He could sense a change in energy around them, a warmth that seemed to be emanating from the creature itself as it lay there, seeming almost content. He breathed in deeply, aware that he'd temporarily cured whatever plagued this unfortunate being.

He smiled a devilish grin before speaking. "I was once from the village... but I can never return to my former self," he said in a voice eerily calm yet still struck with fear. Yet even in this terrible state, his love for his wife remained strong and drove him to convert whatever bit of rationality there remained within him as an anchor if nothing else.

He listened fearfully to the words of the beast. He had never seen anything like it before, but he could feel its power in his very bones as it spoke. Its voice was like thunder and its eyes were aglow with supernatural energy. "Return to my village," said the beast, "and tell my wife that I have changed into one of the creatures that hunt this land." The beast whispered, "She is the one that wears a ring with this symbol." The beast handed Anthony a ring.

He shivered involuntarily as he stepped away from the abomination before him. The beast had once been a man, but now only gruesome fur and fangs remained. Even in the darkness of night he could see its glowing eyes looking down at him with an unearthly hunger. The beast lay helplessly at his feet, its chest heaving with effort as it begged for its final mercy. Its eyes were filled with despair and a glimmer of hope that he could grant it the death it so desperately seemed to desire. Despite his hesitation, he slowly bent forward and pressed the silver blade of his dagger against the beast's chest.

He could feel its thick fur beneath his fingertips, as if pleading for one last act of mercy. Suddenly, the creature clawed fiercely at Anthony and Julian reacted instinctively, pushing his dagger straight through its hard skin and into its heart. As he wiped the sweat off his forehead, Julian stepped away from the now lifeless being, wondering how something so horrifying could exist.

His legs and arms were heavy, like weights pulling him down towards the ground. Sweat dripped from his forehead as he fought not to stumble against exhaustion with each step forward. He had relied on adrenaline after piercing the beast's heart, but it didn't seem to be enough to keep going any longer. He had used up most of his magical reserves and felt an emptiness in himself that he had never reached before. He knew that if he wanted to continue performing powerful magic, he would need to go home and recharge by amplifying spells, rituals, and invocations.

Julian and Anthony trudged through the mud, their waterskins filled with water sloshing against their legs as they stumbled towards the village. The air was thick with danger, making both of them uneasy as they trekked forward; every sound seemed to be a warning sign sent by unseen forces.
