章 17: First Gym Battle Part 2
As soon as the second round began Mark had Grovyle start by using double team and Eric had Latias remain in the shadow and also move to the bushes that where scattered around the battle field as to help keep her hidden and await Marks next move.
Eric via telepathy: Latias stay hidden and watch for an opening. When you do strike make sure that you remain invisible and sink back into the shadows immediately after.
After about ten minutes of no action and a large build up of anticipation Mark decided to strike first.
Mark: Grovyle destroy all of the bushes and anything that your opponent could be hiding in, but be careful we don't know what type of Pokemon this one is.
Grovyle immediately started to use Leaf Blade on all of the bushes to destroy them but as soon as the bush would start to break apart it would leap back and use Razor Leaf to eradicate the rest of the bush and to try and prevent a sneak attack from what was left.
As Grovyle approached the last bush in the arena Latias noticed a pattern in Grovyle's attack and retreat. Grovyle had a slight limp in his left leg probably from an old injury that never quite healed properly she thought. Eric too noticed this and telepathically ordered Latias to attack the Grovyle just before it uses Leaf Blade. So Latias laid in wait for Grovyle to get a little bit closer and just as instructed Latias unleashed a powerful Shadow Ball that hit Grovyle's left leg causing it to stumble backwards dazed. Just before Grovyle could recover from Latias's surprise Shadow Ball Latias had slid back into the shadows. Even though Grovyle was in pain from the sneak attack Mark wasn't concerned about it.
Mark: I see that you've improved since yesterday young one.
Eric: not really. just testing out some new skills and attacks.
After hearing this Mark was surprised that all of the attacks from this vanishing Pokemon was just them testing themselves.
Mark: Grovyle! Use Double team again and Sword Dance.
Grovyle did as Mark instructed and regained it's composure, but just as Grovyle began to search for it's opponent it was hit in the back by a Dragon Breath. When Grovyle turned to face it's opponent nothing was there. Mark noticed Grovyle's confusion and yelled for it to watch the shadows for movement and to use Bullet Seed if it see's any movement. as Mark was advising Grovyle, Latias snuck behind Grovyle and again she used Dragon Breath on Grovyle but this time it was a critical hit on it's injured leg causing Grovyle to lose its balance.
Mark: Steady yourself Grovyle! And use Agility!
As Grovyle tried to steady itself Latias emerged from the shadow, charging a Shadow Ball and rushed Grovyle with such speed that it would remind you of Minato from Naruto. Just as Latias was about to hit Grovyle with her Shadow Ball Grovyle used Quick Attack to dodge and get behind Latias.
Mark: That's it Grovyle you got it right where you want it.
after Mark said this he then noticed that both the strange Pokemon and Eric were completely calm and in fact he noticed that Eric had a slight grin on his face.
Mark: What are you grinning about kid?
Eric: Just that I had already planned for this.
Mark: Grovyle get out of there!
But it was too late. For Latias had already turned and slapped the Shadow Ball that she had prepared into Grovyle's cheek sending it flying out of the battlefield and knocked out.
Gym Official: Grovyle is unable to battle! Eric Wins the match!
Latias then flies over to Eric and smiles waiting for praise and a head rub to which Eric rubs her head and praises her on learning how to use he speed and control Shadow Ball to not just be a ranged attack but also as a close quarters attack. Just as Eric was about to ask Mark about the badge he won Mark began to laugh loudly.
Mark: HHHAAAHAAAHAAA! I haven't seen such talent since well Red challenged me to a match before he became a world champion. And on rare talent I would like to ask you a few things, first question being is that Pokemon you have there what I think she is?
And with that question Mark also tossed the scythe badge to Eric who caught it out of reflex.
Eric looked at the badge and noticed it was in the shape of a scythers arms crossed over each other and had two stars at the top of it. As Eric put his first GYM badge into his badge case Ashley and Laura came down from the stands to join.
Eric: Well Mark if you're referring to her being one of the twin guardians of Altomare, you would be both right and wrong.
Laura: What do you mean one of the guardians of Altomare?
Ashley: well, in the City of Altomare there's a legend about two Pokemon that saved the City from a massive tidal wave one was white and red and the other was blue and white, the people believe they still protect the City from wrong doer's and natural disasters to this day.
Mark and Eric: that's both right and wrong as well.
Laura: What do you two mean she's both right and wrong?
Eric: Well it's not just a legend, it's an actual fact that two Pokemon one red and white and the other blue and white save Altomare a long time ago.
Mark: But both of them did so at the expense of themselves. So they passed away protecting the City, but it's still protected by their descendants.
Laura: So your Pokemon is one of them?
Eric: Well yes and no. I found her as an egg the same day I got my starter. Also she's able to hide in shadows like the ghastly line, not to mention her coloration is different, but she is of the same species.
Mark and Laura: YOU HATCHED IT FROM AN EGG?!
Eric: Yes I did. Ashley was there as well.
Laura: So just how old is she?
Eric: She's only a week old.
Both Mark and Laura were shocked at how old Latias was and were also surprised that even at only a week old it managed to defeat a stronger pokemon like Grovyle. Ashley just stood there trying not to laugh at the scene unfolding in front of her.
Eric: well I should be off, cause I owe Ashley lunch.
And with Mark and Laura still in shock Eric and Ashley left the gym to find a good place to eat.
And so ends Eric's first GYM battle and with this His trainer rank is now intermediate. What will Eric do now that he's earned his first badge, What happened to all of the kidnapped trainers. For the answer to these questions and more tune in next time.
