The Three Factions

The Three Factions (三大勢力, San Daiseiryoku) are the three groups of Fallen Angels, Devils, and Angels mentioned in the Bible, who are the main focus of High School DxD.

Summary

Pre Great War

The Three Factions started thousands of years before the start of the story after the Biblical God cast out Angels that opposed his teachings, creating the Fallen Angels who inhabited in the Underworld alongside the Devils. Unlike other supernatural groups (Norse Gods, Hindu Gods, Greco-Roman Gods, etc.) which were apparently more or less independent of each other, these three factions were all interconnected. Together, the Three Factions spawned the Judeo-Christian religion, and became part of the Bible.

Great War

The Three Factions of Angels, Devils, and Fallen Angels eventually warred against one another under the leaderships of the Biblical God, the Four Great Satans, and the Fallen Angel organization; Grigori, led by Azazel, in a conflict which came to be known as the Great War which continued for an unknown period of time till it ended hundreds of years prior to the creation of the Kuoh Treaty after the deaths of the Biblical God and Four Great Satans[1].

Post Great War

Following the deaths of the Biblical God and the Four Great Satans as well as a massive loss in their main forces, the Great War finally ended, but it left the Three Factions in a state of conflict. However, due to a state of extreme exhaustion after the Great War and with all three factions losing their main forces, neither of the three sides wanted to continue battling. So while there was no peace between the factions, outright battles did not occur either.

The factions continued in this state with occasional conflicts between members who crossed paths for centuries.

Peace Treaty

After the Excalibur event caused by Kokabiel, which nearly destroyed the existing status quo of the Three Factions, the top brass of each faction decides to hold a conference to solve the existing issues among the Three Factions. They eventually reached an agreement by following Azazel's proposal of forming a peace treaty between the Three Factions. The peace treaty known as the Kuoh Treaty (駒王協定, Kuō Kyōtei), was finally drawn up and ended the disputes between the Three Great Powers as they started to work together to rebuild their religion.

Khaos Brigade terrorism

However, the Three Factions would encounter the first major threat to their new status quo in the form of the Khaos Brigade, which consisted of multiple races: Devils, Fallen Angels, Humans (who are descendants of legendary/mythological heroes), and a few Angels and others who were dissatisfied with the alliance of the Three Factions and sought to plunge the world into chaos.

The Three Factions would learn about the Khaos Brigade's existence during their conference as Azazel revealed their existence to Michael and Sirzechs, with the Khaos Brigade attacking their conference in hopes of assassinating the leaders of the Three Factions, though their attack was foiled.

The first Khaos Brigade faction that sought to destroy the status quo and the Three Factions was the Old Satan Faction, a collection of Devils who were descendent from the original Four Great Satans. They were defeated after they launched an attack at the Youth Devil Rating Game Tournament, with the rest of their leaders being killed, which forced them underground.

Seeking to expand their alliances, the Three Factions attempted to form an alliance with Odin of the Norse Gods and the Shinto Gods, but their meeting was interrupted by Loki, who objected to the alliance and attempted to kill Odin. Loki was defeated by the young devils of Kuoh Academy as the Norse Gods and the Shinto Gods became allies of the Three Factions.

With the Old Satan Faction no longer the dominant power in the Khaos Brigade, the Hero Faction attempted to increase their power and influence within the Khaos Brigade. They kidnapped the leader of Kyoto's Youkai; Yasaka, whom Serafall Leviathan was hoping to meet to and discuss a alliance between the Kyoto Youkai Faction and the Three Factions. Yasaka was later rescued by members of the Gremory Peerage as the Kyoto Youkai Faction became an ally of the Three Factions.

With Ophis becoming interested in Issei Hyoudou's growth as the Red Dragon Emperor, Azazel had her meet with the Occult Research Club in hopes of getting her to leave the Khaos Brigade which would force the Khaos Brigade to collapse. The Hero Faction betrayed Ophis and stole a portion of her power by using Samael, which they used to create Lilith. Shalba Beelzebub reappeared and used Leonardo's Annihilation Maker to create giant Anti-Monsters in an attempt to destroy the Underworld for rejecting him, instigating the Demonic Beast Riot. The allies of the Three Factions rallied to fight of the Anti-Monsters as the young devils were able to defeat the main members of Hero Faction, causing the collapse of the Hero Faction and Old Satan Faction. Due to violating the Kuoh Treaty by having Ophis meet with the Occult Research Club in secret, Azazel resigned as his position of Governor of the Grigori, with the Cadre Shemhazai becoming his successor.

After the initial downfall of the Khaos Brigade, the members of the Three Factions noticed that the scattered factions of the Khaos Brigade were gradually being united under a single banner, with Nilrem attempting to infiltrate Kuoh Town town to kidnap Ravel Phenex in order to perfect their fake Phoenix Tears by analyzing her demonic power.

Later, while attempting to negotiate with the Vampires of the Carmilla Faction, the Three Factions found themselves mixed up in the Vampire Civil War, due to the Occult Research Club's desire to save Gasper Vladi's childhood friend; Valerie Tepes. During the war, they learn that the son of Lucifer; Rizevim Livan Lucifer is alive and the one behind the efforts to rebuild the Khaos Brigade, as he formed his own faction; Qlippoth, to invade the other world by defeating Great Red, who guards the Dimensional Gap using the 666. After the war was halted, the Vampires become allies of the Three Factions sent aid to help the vampires rebuilt their country.

In order to respond to Qlippoth, the Three Factions created a special anti-terrorist team: DxD, to fight against Qlippoth, with them being granted special clearance to move among the faction to fight against Qlippoth.

Qlippoth would continue to perform terroristic acts against the Three Factions, such as attacking Auros and stealing Agreas, invading Heaven and inciting a rebellion of dissatisfied Exorcists.

Team DxD managed to track down the stolen Agreas and defeat Rizevim, though they were unable to prevent Trihexa's awakening. Now lead by the two legendary Evil Dragons; Apophis and Aži Dahāka, the newly released 666 would begin rampaging in the territories of the Three Factions, causing great devastation. The Three Factions and all of their allies were able to defeat the Evil Dragons and defeat Trihexa by sealing it, though it also forced the higher-ups of each faction and the gods of each factions to seal themselves with Trihexa to steadily cut down its combat power.

Post Evil Dragon War

Following the Evil Dragon War, the strength that the Three Factions have regained was once again exhausted due to the fact the factions lost a majority of their leadership, with 3 of the Four Great Satans and 3 of the Four Great Seraphs along with the former Governor of the Grigori; Azazel being sealed in the Isolation Field Barrier. Due to the loss of leadership, the Three Factions had a change in leadership as Ajuka Beelzebub became the leader of the Devils and Gabriel became the leader of the Angels.

As the number of Satans was reduced, Ajuka planned to implement the Seven Great Satans system to increase the number of active Satans in the future, while the higher-ups of Heaven seem want to fill the Seraphs and higher-up's seats in the future, as they would be asking powerful reincarnated Angels to fill in those roles in the future.

The Three Factions organized the Azazel Cup, a international Rating Game tournament that anyone could compete in as way of easing tensions between each of the mythological factions and to cultivate powerful fighters in the future.

During the Cup, Hades assembled his own group; the Alliance of Hell, which wanted to eliminate the other mythological leaders, the Three Factions and the Longinus. After several Alliance of Hell attacks such as Nyx's attack on the Occult Research Club and Erebus' attack on Kyoto, the Three Factions managed to convince the other mythological factions to allow them to defeat Hades and his patrons. As Team DxD managed to corner the Alliance of Hell to London, DxD defeated the entirety of the remaining Alliance members, capturing them.

When the Vali Team was scheduled to deliver the defeated Hades and Angra Mainyu, they were attacked by two strange machine creatures: Bebevu Su and Gvardora, who were members of the Evie race from the other world of Evie Etoulde, as the two manage to snatch the defeated Hades and Angra Mainyu from the Vali Team and escape with them. It is revealed that the higher-ups of the Three Factions and the chief-gods are aware of the Evies and their existence due to the knowledge that was given to Azazel by a time-traveling Gasper Vladi, as they know about the existence of the Evil God Melvazoa and the fact that his brother Regalzeva has reached their world and planned on invading.

Kuoh Treaty

The Kuoh Treaty (駒王協定, Kuō Kyōtei) is a document signed by each of the leaders of the Three Factions, pledging to cease all hostility and fighting between each of its members, as further fighting between the factions would only lead to more problems for each faction, especially given how much of their populations were lost during the Great War and other conflicts such as the Devil Civil War.

The document was named after Kuoh Town, the location where the Three Factions had their conference and singed the treaty. Due to this, Kuoh Town is considered as an important location to the Three Factions, as each of the factions have some level of representation in it; with the Devil side having the Gremory Peerage and Sitri Peerage who are living in it, the Grigori; who build some bases under Kuoh Town and the Heaven side initially sending Michael's Ace; Irina Shidou as a envoy to live in the town and later building some new headquarters in a neighbouring town near Kuoh Town.

Alliance

As the Three Factions began strengthening their alliance, they assisted each other in strengthening each of their factions so that the Three Factions could regain their former power, especially with the fact that news of the God of the Bible's death was slowly becoming known among the other mythological factions.

To prevent an incursion by a hostile mythological faction, the factions slowly rebuild their numbers; for instance with the assistance of the other scientists of the Three Factions, Heaven was able to create the Brave Saints system; a reincarnation system similar to that of Devils's Evil Pieces. Another way of increasing their power was to locate and try to recruit the possessors of Longinus Sacred Gears; with the possessors being given additional training and focus in order to encourage their growth. An example would be Issei Hyoudou, the Pawn of the Gremory peerage, who was trained personally by Azazel. If a Longinus was found by a member of the Three Factions, they had a duty to report it to the higher-ups of each of the factions. Failure to do so would constitute a breach of the Kuoh Treaty, as was demonstrated when the Great King Faction ordered Sairaorg Bael to hide the identity of his Pawn; Regulus' identity as the avatar of the Regulus Nemea Longinus, causing the Great King Faction to be questioned by the Satan factions with the Grigori and Heaven making a complaint to the Devil side.

As the Three Factions were able to coalesce into a working alliance, they slowly began the process of trying to make alliances with the other mythological factions such as the Norse Gods.

After the Great War, the overall strength of the Three Factions changed drastically with the Angels losing their God, the Devils losing their forces and their leaders, the Four Great Satans, and the Fallen Angels who lost many of their forces except their leaders.

Following the creation of the Evil Pieces and Brave Saints systems, the Devils and Angels forces have incorporated reincarnated humans and other species into their races. Before the Great War, he sealed the apocalyptic beast; Trihexa, using thousands of forbidden seals, which Rizevim theorized left him in a weakened state during the Great War, where he died alongside the Four Great Satans. His death has been kept secret to maintain the faith of his believers, but has weakened the control over the Holy and Sacred Gear Systems he once held, and prevents the pure Angel population from increasing. God and BuddhaSign in to edit

Gods (神, Kami) and Buddhas (仏, Butsu) are one of the various races in High School DxD and are a principal object of faith and worship in religions.

Summary

Gods are major figures among the many mythologies. Some, most notably Christianity, are monotheistic, revolving around a single God. Other pantheistic mythologies can have several. Within these mythologies, Gods can rule over various phenomena. The head God of a mythology is known as a Chief-God (主神, Shushin).

There are also Benevolent Gods and Evil Gods (悪神, Akushin), the latter of whom serve as antagonistic forces among their mythologies. However, Gods are considered more honest with their feelings than humans,[1] and even Gods who are not considered "evil" can be prone to easily getting jealous and tend to harbor grudges for eternity.[2] The Olympian Gods are said to be notably fickle, lively, and irrational among Gods.[2][3]

There are beings such as Humans and Youkai who were not born as Gods or Buddhas, but are able to ascend into that status through completing various tasks for Gods.[4] Examples of this being Sun Wukong, the First Generation's Sha Wujing, Zhu Bajie, and Nezha, the first three being Youkai and the latter being a Human. There also exist Half-Gods (半神, Hanshin) such as Walkures, and Grim Reapers are a sub-species of Gods serving under Hades.

Appearance

Similar to other supernatural beings such as Devils and Angels, most Gods and Buddhas appear a lot like normal Humans to where they cannot be distinguished from them aside from giving off an almost divine presence. Some Gods appear much younger than they actually are such as Shiva, who appears between fourteen to fifteen.

Although, there are other Gods who have either more animalistic or inhuman appearances, such as Sun Wukong who bears a strong resemblance to a monkey, being a former monkey Youkai who was turned into a Buddha. Hades, one of the Greek Gods, appears more like an actual walking skeleton nearly impossible to be alive. Angra Mainyu appears more like a human phantom that emits a far more chaotic aura. Tartarus appears to be the most inhuman among the other Gods thus far, being a black sphere with multiple eyes and tentacles.

Powers and Abilities

Gods are considered among the two strongest beings in Draconic Deus, most having power surpassing that of Satan-Class Devils. A powerful one, in particular, the Chief Gods could manage their own religion (or faction), gathering the faith of those who believe in them over a long period for varied purposes. However, there are the ones who focuses on commerce and farming, whereas others focus on combat,[5] making them capable of also changing an entire terrain from their attacks alone. This aside, these beings can withstand attacks that no normal being could, as shown when Loki, despite focusing on Magic, could withstand attacks from Durandal, Issei Hyoudou and Vali Lucifer without being deterred.

As per their status, Gods have a wide range of abilities either unique to their status or their particular religions. Such ones can be considered nothing more than unexplained miracles impossible for other beings. Aside from it, those such as Fire and Storm Gods are capable of manipulating flames and the weather without restrictions. As divine beings, Gods can bless other beings, Humans, in particular, bestowing onto them a wide range of different advantages against supernatural beings. As part of their religion, Gods have access to the Magic related to their particular faction, i.e. Norse and Hindu Magic. As a result of their divine status, this makes it possible for them to wield powerful weapons, such as Mjölnir and Gungnir, something beings of equivalent couldn't.

In addition to this, Gods are long-lived beings as well, capable of living more than a millennia, with most of them being much older than the original Four Great Satans, founding members of the Grigori and the First Generation Devils. Although it's possible for them to die, Gods could resurrect depending on the amount of belief in them.[6][7] However, such a thing hasn't been shown and instead mentioned.

Weaknesses

Despite their immense power and being divine beings, Gods aren't without their weaknesses, such as being susceptible to old age and eventually weakening. As shown when the Norse Chief God, Odin is noted as being weaker compared to his "prime". In addition to this, Gods can be killed by either powerful weapons meant to kill them or other beings of equivalent or superior power. Among thus weapons, Top-Tier Sacred Gears, such as the Longinus if mastered, can deal significant damage to them.

For whatever reason, Gods can be weakened as the belief in them begins fading, which became a major issue as Christianity begun spreading into others.[1]

Characters

Ex Gremory Kurenai Himejima

Ex Gremory (イクス・グレモリー Ikusu Guremori): The son of Issei Hyoudou and Rias Gremory as well as the sixth eldest sibling, he is known as the God Slayer of the Scarlet Blade. He was trained by both Vali and Kiba; therefore he is the young ace of the united armies of all combined mythological systems, as well as the strongest swordsman of the Gremory family. He is described as a young teen with red hair. Ex is a typically very obedient and brave lad but is also headstrong as he has a tendency to become reckless when someone important to him is injured and taking more independent action on his own, Airi is so far the only sibling who can scare him into following orders. Ex has conflicting feelings towards his father, for he initially has a slight dislike for him on account of Issei failing to protect Asia from when Future Loki placed her in a coma with his curse, but at the same time misses him very much since he hardly ever spending time with him and admires how he is always able to continue fighting. Compared to his father who is open about his perverted desires, Ex is rather shy in contrast.

Ex has inherited the Power of Destruction from his mother. Additionally he also wields 2 weapons: an artificial version of the Boosted Gear, the Boosted Gear Diabolos and a crimson sword, Galatine III, which is an alchemy-metalurgical crafted version of the original one that he uses in tandem with his Power of Destruction in a slash form.

Kurenai Himejima (姫島 紅ひめじま くれない Himejima Kurenai): The eldest of the siblings and the son of Issei and Akeno Himejima. Kurenai is described as a slender boy with black hair and comes off as a well mannered person, apologizing on his siblings behalf when they act reckless as well as a notable leader. As a researcher from Grigori, Kurenai is the person that created the Artificial Boosted Gear for his brother Ex and is Azazel's successor as a Grigori Researcher.

He inherited the abilities of the Himejima bloodline and his grandfather such as Purification and Holy Lightning respectfully. Kurenai can summon a Sacred Beast called Houou, which is similar to his clan's Suzaku, that can control fire. Kurinai is also capable of flight by using Dragon wings.

Zen Quarta Shirayuki

Zen Quarta (漸・クァルタゼン・クァルタ Zen Kuaruta): Son of Issei and Xenovia Quarta and likely the third eldest sibling. Like his mother, Zen is slightly destructive in battle, but not quite as stubborn. Zen has a close relationship with Kiba who became his sword master and sees him as a second father figure at the very least.

Zen is the wielder of the Durandal IV. Like Ex, he was also trained by Kiba. Due to his training with Kiba, Zen's usage of his Durandal IV is more focused on techniques rather than its destructive powers like his mother. Zen is also capable of flight using his Dragon wings.

Shirayuki (白雪しらゆき): Daughter of Issei and Koneko Toujou. Like her mother, Shirayuki is a Nekomata with white hair and cat ears and usually wears a white kimono. She is noted to give off a tough looking expression. She is one of the younger siblings to have come.

Shirayuki is able to use Touki and since she is a Senjutsu user, she can also create countless numbers of Kasha's.

Kurobara Airi Hyoudou

Kurobara (黒茨くろばら): Daughter of Issei and Kuroka. Similar to her Nekomata sister, Kurobara has matching black hair and cat ears that are similar to her respective mother, and also wears a black kimono. She is noted to be a bit more composed compared to her mother's joyful attitude, though like her mother she often ends her sentences with "Nya" (にゃ), mimicking a cat's meow. She is both the sister and cousin of Shirayuki, the two were also born on the same day, making them similar to twins but not literally.

Kurobara is able to use Touki and, like Shirayuki, is a Senjutsu user, which means she can also create countless numbers of kasha.

Airi Hyoudou (兵藤 愛理ひょうどう アイリ Hyōdō Airi): The second eldest of the siblings and the daughter of Issei and Asia Argento, she was born around the same year as Kurenai. She has the appearance of a young girl with long blonde hair and green eyes, she also wears fingerless battling gloves whenever she enters a fight. Like her mother, Airi is really kind hearted and has a strong impression of seniority, which is seen when she act out the part of a proper older sister or even assisting a lost old lady when, in fact, she wasn't meant to interact with anyone on their mission. Airi is also quite intimidating, as seen by her giving off a silent pressure with a scary smile even when her younger sibling go out of line, as a result, she is easily feared by them. She also comes off as rather bold and energetic as she went overboard in beating the enemies who harmed her mother while passionately saying how wonderful she is.

Unlike her mother, Airi excels in combat, due to being both an excellent nature-based magic user and a proficient hand-to-hand fighter. She is said to be tied with Ex as the strongest among the siblings in terms of combat. She wields an artificial Longinus Sacred Gear; Gigantis Maiden Robe, in which Fafnir is used as the power source.

Shin Shidou Robertina Hyoudou

Shin Shidou (紫藤 真しどう シン): Son of Issei and Irina Shidou. Shin is the third son of Issei and therefore the forth oldest sibling. He is described as a young boy with chestnut hair color and wears a crucifix around his neck. Like Airi, Shin also feels the necessity to help others in need.

He inherits most of his mother's Angelic powers with the addition of wielding two Holy Swords: Kashuu Kiyomitsu and Yamatonokami Yasusada.

Robertina Hyoudou (ロベルティナ・ヒョウドウ): Daughter of Issei and Ravel Phenex. She is described as a blonde young girl with twice as many hair drills as her mother (total of 4). She is younger than Ex but was born around the same year as him. She has the characteristics of a well mannered noble girl. She respects her father the most out of all of her siblings and tends to berate those who acts stubborn even to her own sibling especially Ex, a trait she inherited from her mother's "Ojou" personality.

Robertina has also inherited the abilities of the flames of the Phenex clan as well as her father's Dragon aura. She is also skilled at using magic.

Helmwige Ernestine Karnstein

Helmwige (ヘルムヴィーゲ): Daughter of Issei and Rossweisse. She is described as a silver hair girl tied in a single long braid and wears a Valkyrie armor that appears to look similar to the Boosted Gear Scale Mail. She was born around the same year as Zen and Shin, making her the second oldest daughter and overall fifth oldest sibling.

Helmwige excels as an expert in magic, as she is capable of using her magic to analyze and replicate spells from other magic wielders as well. She was able to copy Future Loki's spell that would free Asia from the coma he placed on her.

Ernestine Karnstein (エルネスティーネ): Daughter of Issei and Elmenhilde Karnstein. She has the usual traits of a Vampire with blonde hair and red eyes. Ernestine appears to also come off as a well mannered and humble noble girl. She is trained as Gaspers as pupil. She appeared at the last moment when she traveled to the past with her father.

While not seen, she allegedly has all of the basic Vampiric abilities, while being a half-blood also implies that she is immune to all known Vampire weaknesses such as sunlight.

Mordred Hyoudou

Mordred Hyoudou (モルドレッド・ヒョウドウ): Son of Issei and Le Fay, who is able to wield his family's sword, Caliburn, but chooses to use magic like his mother, which Robertina states was a waste of talent. Mordred did not appear during the story as he was coordinating the time travelling for his siblings.

Antagonist

Future Loki (ロキ): The Evil God of Norse Mythology who was able to break free from his imprisonment at some point and placed a curse on Asia that put her in a coma. UL: The Underworld Lifeforms are mechanical beings from the ExE world that are a combination of machine and organic parts. These beings are soldiers manufactured by the evil gods from the parallel world. They invaded the world the Three Factions resides in in the near future before traveling into the past with Loki. Their entire bodies appear to resemble humanoid insects with four limbs, while having a hard exoskeleton surface which emits a brilliant luster and are entirely colored in one shade of silver. They seem to have neither a nose or a mouth, appear to have five pale eyes, and a large protruding head. These lifeforms also appear to be durable enough to withstand Koneko's Touki enhanced punch and are capable of shooting a red beam from each of its five eyes that can bypass defensive magic circles, have the ability to curve, and, at the same time, redirect their trajectory. These lifeforms also have, within their bodies, the ability to produce countless tentacles, which they can reattach and use to heal themselves.

It does has any wings on its back, but it had what appeared to be rocket engines on either side of its back. The mouth that had been made of metal had been manufactured to look like the smile of a flesh and blood living creature. It can also give off a green lustre.

Addoza: One of the four "Invade Fanatics". He was the one who sent the drill to Garvarudan when he broke his arm.

He's always rushing over back and forth from one place to another, such as to certain locations for other mythological systems, whether it's helping out, giving speeches or some kind of industrial enterprise.
