章 10: A QUEST FOR TRUTH

Luc's mind raced as he followed the man, his thoughts consumed by questions and doubts. Why was Stephanie's acquaintance involved in a mysterious meeting about a ring? Could it be connected to the secrets she was hiding? And what did it all mean for Luc and his impending marriage to Stephanie?

As he followed the man through the villa, Luc's resolve grew. He needed answers, and he needed them now. He watched from a distance as the man entered a secluded room at the back of the villa. Luc hesitated for a moment, then cautiously approached the room and listened at the door.

Inside, he could hear murmured voices. The man was speaking to someone else, but Luc couldn't make out what they were saying. He strained to listen, desperate to uncover the truth.

Suddenly, the door opened, and Luc found himself face to face with Stephanie's acquaintance. The man's eyes widened in surprise, but before he could react, Luc grabbed him by the collar and pulled him into the room, closing the door behind him.

"Who are you meeting? What's this about a ring?" Luc demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

The man struggled against Luc's grip, but Luc held him firmly. "I don't know what you're talking about," the man stammered.

"Don't lie to me!" Luc growled. "I saw you on the phone, talking about a ring. What's going on?"

The man hesitated, then finally spoke. "It's...it's nothing, just a business deal. I swear, I don't know anything about a ring."

Luc's grip tightened, his patience wearing thin. "You expect me to believe that? Tell me the truth, or so help me..."

Before he could finish, the door burst open, and Stephanie stood in the doorway, her eyes wide with shock. "Luc, what are you doing?" she exclaimed.

Luc released the man and turned to face Stephanie, his anger flaring. "I should be asking you the same thing. What's going on, Stephanie? What are you hiding?"

Stephanie looked at him, her expression unreadable. "It's...it's complicated, Luc. Please, let me explain."

But Luc had heard enough. He stormed out of the room, his mind racing with thoughts of betrayal and deception. He had trusted Stephanie, had believed her when she said she loved him. But now, everything had changed. He didn't know who she was anymore, didn't know if he could ever trust her again.

As he made his way back to his room, Luc's heart was heavy with regret and sorrow. He had thought he was doing the right thing by marrying Stephanie, but now he wasn't so sure. He needed time to think, to sort through his feelings and decide what to do next.

As Luc sat on his bed, the pieces of the puzzle started to come together. Stephanie's involvement with the man and the mysterious ring suddenly made sense. He remembered a conversation they had while drinking, where he had mentioned a ring that belonged to his grandma.

Stephanie had asked him if he had anything from his grandma to remember her by, and he had shown her the ring. It was a family heirloom, passed down through generations, and it held a special place in his heart.

But now, he realized that Stephanie must have had ulterior motives. She must have been planning to steal the ring all along, using her acquaintance to help her. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks, filling him with a sense of betrayal and anger.

How could she do this to him? How could she betray his trust in such a callous way? Luc knew he had to confront Stephanie, to get to the bottom of this once and for all. He stood up, his mind made up. He would not let her get away with this deception.

As Luc made his way to find Stephanie, his anger simmered beneath the surface. He found her in the garden, tending to the flowers, her back to him. He approached her slowly, his steps deliberate.

"Stephanie," he called out, his voice cold and hard.

Stephanie turned around, a smile on her face that faltered when she saw the look in his eyes. "Luc, what's wrong?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.

"What's wrong?" Luc repeated, his tone incredulous. "You know exactly what's wrong. I know about your plan to steal my grandmother's ring."

Stephanie's eyes widened in shock, and she took a step back. "Luc, I don't know what you're talking about. I would never..."

"Don't lie to me, Stephanie," Luc interrupted, his voice rising. "I heard you talking to that man about the ring. You were planning to steal it, weren't you?"

Stephanie's expression hardened, and she took a step forward, her eyes blazing with anger. "And what if I was?" she snapped. "That ring belongs to you, not to your precious grandmother. Why should it matter if I take it?"

Luc was taken aback by her words. He had never seen this side of Stephanie before, this ruthless, calculating side. He realized then that he never truly knew her at all.

"You don't understand, Stephanie," Luc said, his voice softening. "That ring is more than just a piece of jewelry. It's a symbol of my family's history, of my grandmother's love for me. And you were willing to take that away from me."

"This all means that you where never pregnant Stephanie", luc continued furiously. "You lied to me so I'll marry you?, Well guess what? The ring is with it's rightful owner".

Luc's heart pounded in his chest as he confronted Stephanie. Stephanie's initial shock gave way to defiance, her eyes flashing with anger.

"I can't believe you would stoop so low, Stephanie," Luc said, his voice trembling with emotion. "To lie to me, to manipulate me... How could you?"

Stephanie squared her shoulders, her gaze unwavering. "I did what I had to do, Luc. You were never going to marry me otherwise. I needed that ring, that life, and I was willing to do whatever it took to get it."

Luc felt a wave of disgust wash over him. "You used me, Stephanie. You played with my feelings, my trust... And for what? A ring? A lie?"

Stephanie's mask of defiance slipped, revealing a flicker of remorse. "I never meant to hurt you, Luc. I just wanted a better life, for myself. I thought if we were married, I would get the ring. I just wanted the ring..."

Luc had heard enough. He turned away from her, his heart heavy with sorrow. "It's over, Stephanie. I can't be with someone I can't be with you. I deserve better, Goodbye."

With that, Luc walked away, leaving Stephanie alone, her dreams shattered. She sank to her knees, the weight of her actions crashing down on her. She had lost everything, all for a ring and a lie.

As he walked away, he felt a mix of emotions. Anger, betrayal, sadness... But beneath it all, there was a sense of relief. He was free from Stephanie's lies, free to find someone who truly deserved his love, and she was in town.
