章 47: 47. Camp

Half an hour later...

Marsh stared in astonishment at the vast, unending expanse of jungle before him. It was hard to imagine that, on the bustling Sabaody Archipelago, there could be a place like this.

Even from a distance, the roar of countless wild beasts echoed from within the forest.

He couldn't help but think of the remote island of Rusukaina, where Luffy trained after the war. Could it be that this Navy training camp followed a similar approach?

"Marsh!" A voice called out behind him.

Huh? Someone here actually knew him?

He turned to see Smoker!

Smoker looked far more energetic than when they'd first met. Carrying a huge backpack, he ran over excitedly and clapped Marsh on the shoulder. "I'm here too!"

"That's great. I thought I wouldn't know anyone else in the training camp." Marsh replied, punching Smoker lightly on the chest.

But just as his fist was about to make contact, Smoker's upper body suddenly turned to smoke, leaving Marsh's punch to hit empty air!

"Oh? You've already mastered intangibility?" Marsh said in surprise.

To reach this level with his Devil Fruit in just a few days, no wonder Smoker later became such a powerful young Vice Admiral!

"Hahahaha, not quite. Vice Admiral Kuzan gave me a few pointers on behalf of Vice Admiral Garp, which is why I was allowed to join the training camp." Smoker said, scratching his head with a hint of embarrassment.

That explains it.

Having faced Kuzan in a simulation, Marsh knew well how masterfully he wielded his Devil Fruit powers.

"Let's go report in! We have to give it our all in this camp." Smoker said, his expression turning serious.

"Right!"

At the camp entrance, fenced off by wooden barriers, a group of people were gathered, whispering amongst themselves.

Marsh and Smoker exchanged glances, understanding that these people were their classmates for the foreseeable future.

Just then, a group walked out from inside the training camp.

Leading them was a man with a cigar in his mouth, thick bandages on his chest, still seeping blood!

When Marsh got a clear look at his face, his eyes widened in shock!

"That's Rear Admiral Blake, the assistant instructor for this training camp. What's the matter? Do you know him?" Smoker asked, noticing Marsh's reaction.

"Know him? You could say that…" Marsh muttered with a wry smile.

What was he supposed to do, having sliced his instructor before camp even started?

Could use some advice on this... quickly!

"Now, line up! Report to me one at a time! And no cutting in line! Behave yourselves!" Blake shouted.

Instantly, the trained Navy officers formed two lines, approaching Blake in turn to report.

The soldiers behind Blake worked swiftly to record the information.

Finally, it was Marsh's turn.

He glanced at Blake, who was staring right back at him, and braced himself as he and Smoker stepped forward.

"Name?"

"Marsh."

"Rank?"

"Lieutenant of Marine Headquarters."

"How did you get to the Sabaody Archipelago?"

"Swam."

The students lined up behind him erupted in murmurs.

Swam?

From Marineford to here?

If he had that kind of stamina, why did he even come to training camp?

Is he bluffing?

Even Smoker looked at Marsh in disbelief.

"Shut up!" Blake yelled, stopping the commotion. Then he turned to his subordinate and asked, "Did you record it accurately?"

The subordinate nodded, giving Marsh a few more curious glances.

"You're good to go. Hand over your weapon, and you can enter." Blake said to Marsh.

Marsh frowned slightly.

Hand over his weapon?

Smoker chimed in, "Sir, we weren't informed we'd have to turn in our weapons for the training camp."

"Oh, that's a new rule. Got a problem with it?" Blake didn't even look at Smoker, keeping his gaze fixed on Marsh with a knowing smirk.

"Uh…" Smoker was about to say something more, but suddenly he was kicked aside by a foot wrapped in Haki.

"Kid, lesson number one: don't speak without permission."

Blake looked down at Smoker as if he were a mere ant.

"So, what you mean is that weapons aren't allowed in the training camp, correct?" Marsh asked calmly.

"More or less." Blake replied, raising his chin, a mocking smile on his face.

"Understood." Marsh nodded and removed the bamboo sword from his waist.

Seeing this, Blake's smirk widened.

He didn't believe Marsh could actually break through his Armament Haki. The power was likely in this odd-looking bamboo sword.

Just as he was about to reach out and take the strange sword.

Marsh drove the sheathed sword straight into the ground.

Then, with a swift strike, he chopped down on the sword's pommel with his hand.

In an instant, the entire sword vanished from sight, buried deep into the ground.
