The black energy turned a shade of gray, and his complexion began to return to normal.
In another hour and a half, Chiba reached the sixth level.
By then, he had developed a 60% immunity to Devil Fruit energy.
Three hours later, Chiba completed the seventh level, with the gray energy turning into a brilliant white.
Chiba's appearance had fully returned to normal.
He intended to continue cultivating but was interrupted by Hina's urgent shout.
"Ye Jun! Ace has been sent to Impel Down!"
Chiba opened his eyes as Hina hurried over, thrusting a newspaper into his hands.
He glanced at it, then stormed toward his research room and kicked open the door.
Inside, Blackbeard was eating and drinking, his injuries mostly healed.
Seeing Chiba approach, Blackbeard shivered, fear flashing in his eyes. "Master Chiba, w-what do you want?"
Chiba tossed the newspaper at him. "Ace has been sent to Impel Down, Blackbeard. Tell me, why should I let you live?"
Blackbeard's face turned pale as he read the headline.
"Damn it… those fools failed to save Ace. Now I'm finished."
Chiba's gaze was cold. "So… how would you like to die?"
Tears welled up in Blackbeard's eyes. "Master Chiba, please! Spare my life. I'll obey your every command. I'll do whatever you ask!"
"Oh? Is that so?"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Blackbeard sensed a sliver of hope and nodded frantically.
"Alright then. You're going to infiltrate Impel Down and retrieve Ace for me," Chiba said, his gaze piercing.
"This…" Blackbeard hesitated. Impel Down's guards were formidable, and the prison was notoriously inescapable. If he went in, wouldn't he be sealing his own fate?
"Hm?" Chiba's subtle exhale made Blackbeard flinch.
"It'll be fine!" Blackbeard quickly assured him. "I'll do it!"
"Good. Then get going." Chiba waved him off, but Blackbeard hesitated.
"What's wrong? Don't want to leave? Need me to escort you personally?"
"N-no, no! I'll go right away." Blackbeard stammered, then shuffled out of the laboratory, thoughts racing.
"Is he really letting me go?"
"Is this some kind of trick?"
Once outside, Blackbeard reached the shore, boarded a small boat, and sailed away.
Only when Chiba didn't pursue did Blackbeard truly believe he had been freed.
His eyes gleamed with malice as he looked back toward Banaro Island and laughed wildly. "Heh-heh-heh! Monkey D. Chiba, letting me go was the biggest mistake of your life! Hahaha!"
As his laughter echoed, Blackbeard took a small pill from his pocket and swallowed it.
During Chiba's "experiments," he'd nearly died several times, but each time, Chiba used this medicine to keep him alive.
Using the Dark-Dark Fruit, Blackbeard had secretly stored several of these pills, intending to use them for his own training.
"Haha! With medicine this powerful, it won't be long before I reach Admiral-level strength in physical power alone. My Armament Haki and Observation Haki will skyrocket as well. When that day comes, Chiba, we'll settle all old and new grudges. Heh-heh-heh!"
