The tournament was winding down, with most of the matches already decided. Shin had breezed through his matches, his emerald eyes calm and focused as he dispatched each opponent with clinical precision. His only real struggle had come against Choji, whose size and strength proved to be more than a challenge. But Shin had powered through in the end, as expected.
"Ayaka Mori versus Shin Hamada!" Soon, Iruka announced, his voice carrying through the arena.
Ayaka's heart skipped a beat. She quickly stood, her face flushed, not from nervousness, but excitement—albeit mixed with a hint of shyness. Her hands fidgeted slightly as she made her way to the center of the arena, her smile broad but with an edge of bashfulness. She waved at Shin from across the ring, her eyes darting away before quickly meeting his again.
"Shin! Please go easy on me!" she called out, her voice bright but slightly hesitant, a faint blush coloring her cheeks.
Shin, maintaining his usual calm demeanor, couldn't help the small smile that tugged at the corner of his lips. "You already know that I'm not gonna do that, Ayaka," he said, his tone light but firm.
Ayaka blinked. Did Shin just smile at me? Her heart seemed to skip a beat, her mind instantly racing. No, no, no. It could just be a misunderstanding! He's probably just being polite. Don't jump to conclusions, Ayaka! Her cheeks flushed even deeper, and she hurriedly looked away, trying to calm herself.
Shin glanced at Ayaka for a moment before his gaze shifted, catching sight of the faint blush on her cheeks. Is she seriously blushing right now? he thought, surprised but not entirely caught off guard. It was Ayaka, after all—the girl that would become red like a pepper just at his sight. He couldn't help but smile a little more openly. It's kinda... cute, he mused to himself.
Iruka glanced between them, sensing the tension between them. He nodded and gave the signal. "Alright, both of you, take your positions."
Ayaka quickly dropped into a fighting stance, her hands raised in front of her, though her posture was less sure than usual. She avoided looking directly at Shin for a moment, still trying to suppress the flurry of thoughts racing through her head. Focus, Ayaka! It's just a match!
Shin mirrored her stance, his eyes narrowing slightly in focus. He wasn't going to take it easy on her, of course.
Iruka raised his hand. "Begin!"
Ayaka and Shin immediately lunged at each other, their movements swift and precise.
Shin, with his exceptional control over the Leaf Style techniques honed at the academy, was a step ahead from the very start. His footwork was fluid, his strikes sharp, and his counters flawless. Ayaka, on the other hand, moved with determination, her fists held high, her form steady but not nearly as polished. Despite her quick reflexes and energy, it was clear that Shin's mastery of the style was far beyond hers.
In a flash, Shin closed the distance, his fist aimed squarely for Ayaka's midsection. She barely managed to block it, the force of the blow causing her to stagger back. A bead of sweat trickled down her temple, but she didn't hesitate. She regained her footing and rushed forward again, her movements filled with grit and resolve.
Shin dodged and countered easily, his calm gaze studying her every move. He was quick—too quick. Each of Ayaka's attacks felt like they were being anticipated before they even left her hands.
Even so, Ayaka refused to back down. She gritted her teeth, her fists clenched tighter as she faced him once more. She wasn't going to let this defeat define her. With a fierce shout, she lunged forward again, this time feinting a punch to his face before spinning into a low kick aimed at his legs.
Shin's expression remained unchanged, his reflexes reacting before Ayaka even completed her strike. He sidestepped with ease and caught her by the wrist, his grip firm but not painful. In one smooth motion, he twisted her arm, pulling her off balance.
Ayaka gasped, her body briefly suspended in the air before her feet hit the ground hard. She winced, but the fire in her eyes was undeterred. She pushed herself back up, brushing the dust off her clothes.
"Don't hold back, Shin!" she urged, though her voice was slightly strained. Her energy wasn't waning, but her body was beginning to show signs of the difference in skill between them.
Shin gave a small nod, his expression softening slightly. "I'm not holding back, Ayaka," he said, his voice steady.
With renewed focus, Ayaka stood tall again. Despite the gap in their abilities, she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of an easy win. She wasn't just fighting for herself; she was fighting to prove that she could keep up, even if only for a moment.
With a fiery glint in her eye, she lunged forward once again, this time aiming a series of quick, fluid punches, hoping to catch him off guard.
Shin's gaze softened for just a moment as he observed her determination. She's got quite the spirit, he thought, impressed despite himself. Ayaka's persistence, even in the face of obvious disparity in skill, was something he appreciated. Her strikes, though lacking in the precision and speed of his own, were delivered with pure grit and enthusiasm. I like it, he mused inwardly, watching as her movements became faster, more erratic, though still not enough to truly threaten him.
She was giving it her all, and that was something Shin respected. He wasn't going to let her down, but he also wasn't going to take this match lightly just because she was a friend. He dodged and blocked, his movements calculated and effortless. Each of her punches and kicks were met with a sharp counter. He sidestepped one of her attacks, quickly closing the distance between them with a spinning kick aimed at her ribs.
Ayaka gasped as she barely managed to pivot away in time, but the wind from the kick still ruffled her hair, brushing close enough to remind her just how far out of her depth she truly was. Her feet slid on the ground, and she staggered backward slightly, trying to regain her balance.
Shin didn't press the advantage, though. He watched her carefully, waiting for the next move, and as she rushed toward him once more, a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. *She's persistent,* he thought. *This isn't over for her yet.*
Ayaka's body ached, but she wasn't going to let that stop her. She couldn't afford to stop trying. With a sharp breath, she surged forward, throwing herself into the fray with renewed energy. She threw a right hook, followed by a low kick designed to trip him up. But Shin was always a step ahead. His body flowed like water around her attacks. He blocked the hook with ease and jumped over the low kick, landing gracefully behind her.
Before she could react, he struck, his arm outstretched to gently nudge her forward, causing her to stumble just a step ahead. Her legs wobbled as she tried to keep her footing.
Shin stopped, his eyes flickering with a trace of admiration, but his expression remained unchanged. "You're not bad, Ayaka. But you're not at my level yet."
Ayaka straightened, her cheeks flushed but a smile tugging at her lips. She was exhausted, but the words stung a little less now. Even if she couldn't win, she knew she had at least made Shin notice her spirit. With a grunt, she readied herself again. It wasn't over yet. She wasn't going to quit.
The match continued, and Shin, though still in control, kept a part of his attention on her, respecting the determination she put into every move. But his strikes were still precise and overwhelming, and Ayaka struggled to keep up with the speed and power of his moves. Yet, as the fight progressed, it became clear to everyone watching that Ayaka's courage was what made this match truly interesting—not the final result.
...
The arena was still, save for the sound of Ayaka's labored breathing. Sweat dripped down her face, her arms trembling as she struggled to maintain her stance. Every inch of her body screamed in protest, her movements sluggish and unsteady. She could barely keep her fists raised, and her legs felt as though they would give out at any moment.
Shin, on the other hand, stood tall and composed, his emerald eyes calm and steady. His breathing was even, his stance relaxed—he looked as though he had just stepped into the match. The contrast was stark, and the crowd murmured among themselves, some in awe of Shin's prowess, others admiring Ayaka's tenacity.
Iruka stepped forward, his expression firm but kind as he addressed Ayaka. "That's enough, Ayaka. You've done well, but this match is over." He turned to the crowd and raised his hand. "Shin Hamada is the winner!"
The announcement echoed through the arena, but Ayaka barely registered it. She staggered slightly, her legs ready to buckle beneath her. Before she could collapse, Shin was already at her side, offering her a steady hand to help her up.
"You put up a good fight," Shin said, his voice low and steady as he helped her to her feet. Ayaka's vision swam for a moment, and her heart pounded—not just from exhaustion, but from the proximity of Shin's calm, unwavering presence.
Then, leaning slightly closer so only she could hear, Shin whispered into her ear, his voice quiet but deliberate, "You know, I like strong girls… so keep training, Ayaka… maybe one day…" He trailed off, his words hanging in the air like a challenge, a promise, or perhaps something more.
Before she could even begin to process what he'd just said, Shin pulled away, walking off with the same effortless grace that had defined his every movement in the match.
Ayaka stood there, frozen in place. Her face turned a deep crimson, her thoughts an incoherent whirlwind. What did he just say? Did I hear that right? Did Shin just—?! Her heart thudded loudly in her ears, and she could feel every pair of eyes on her, though she barely noticed the crowd.
She brought a shaky hand to her burning cheeks, her legs finally giving out as she sank to the ground in a daze. Her mind was a complete mess, her lips forming words she couldn't quite say out loud. What did he mean, "maybe one day"? Her brain refused to function, the words replaying over and over again in her mind.
From the sidelines, her friends rushed over to check on her, but Ayaka barely noticed them. Her thoughts were entirely consumed by Shin's words, and the faint, lingering warmth of his whisper.
To be continued...
