"Is this Lord Sakumo's child? It's so pitiful."
"This child has suffered from a severe skin disease since he was born and cannot see the sun."
"The poor boy's body is very weak. It's said he was almost stillborn."
In the Fire Country, within the Hatake residence of the Konoha Ninja Village, a child shrouded in black clothes listened to the surrounding whispers about him.
The label of being frail and weak had clung to Muzan Hatake ever since he entered the world of shinobi. It was a disgrace to the Hatake name. Not only was his father the legendary Konoha's White Fang, but even his younger brother was a prodigious ninja.
"It's ridiculous."
Underneath the black clothes were a pair of blood-red eyes, mesmerizing to anyone who saw them. At that moment, a child stood in front of the crowd, holding a kunai and warning the adults around him:
"Bastards! You're not allowed to talk about my brother!"
Kakashi stood in front of Muzan, determined to silence anyone who dared insult him. According to their father's wishes, his older brother was born weak and needed his younger brother's protection.
"Brother, I know you like to sit here quietly, but Father wants you to review your studies. Tomorrow is the entrance exam for the Ninja Academy. Let's go and register together. Don't expect me to help you cheat."
Kakashi worried about his brother. Not only was Muzan physically weak, but he was also extremely lazy. If something didn't concern him directly, he wouldn't lift a finger.
To the extent that their father, Sakumo, thought Muzan shouldn't be forced to practice the Hatake Swordsmanship and should just live as an ordinary villager.
Muzan, who was sitting on the threshold, raised his head and glanced at Kakashi, then stood up. The aura of a superior shinobi emanated from Muzan.
"Don't worry, there are no weaklings in the Hatake clan. I won't disappoint you when we enroll in the Academy tomorrow."
Kakashi was taken aback by Muzan's uncharacteristic confidence. For a moment, as Muzan stood, Kakashi felt a sense of danger.
It must be the aftereffects of training, Kakashi thought.
"Idiot, it's not about failing or disappointing! You have to pass the entrance exam!"
"Crack!"
Just as Kakashi wanted to reprimand Muzan, the door behind them opened. Hatake Sakumo couldn't help but have a headache seeing his two quarreling sons.
"You two, the entrance exam is tomorrow. Go back and review your studies."
"And dinner is ready, go and eat!"
Lifting Kakashi up with one hand, Sakumo looked into his deadpan eyes and made up his mind to change Kakashi's demeanor. Otherwise, he might never find a wife with those lifeless eyes.
As for Muzan standing in the shadows, the moment he turned around, Sakumo was speechless.
"What happened to this kid?"
Earlier, while cleaning the house, Sakumo sensed a wild beast's presence. Rushing over to protect his sons, he found no beast, only Muzan standing in the shadows.
Underestimating a Kage-level shinobi's perception, especially one proficient in taijutsu, was unwise.
"I don't know either," Muzan said, recounting what happened and adding the words of the aunt. "Then I became very angry, and a power surged from my body."
A perfect answer, impossible to detect as a lie from a child.
Sakumo was stunned. Anger can indeed unlock power. Taking the Uchiha clan's eyes as an example, could the Hatake clan also have a hidden kekkei genkai?
"It's a good sign. Keep it secret and train seriously to become truly strong."
Sakumo smiled like a proud father. He had always been worried about Muzan, not because he couldn't become strong, but because his body was too frail.
Even sunlight could be deadly, and surviving to adulthood was uncertain.
Sakumo didn't press Muzan about his bloodline. Everyone has secrets.
Inside, he saw Kakashi serving dinner and, feeling his veins bulge, lifted Kakashi and scolded him:
"Kakashi, we haven't even started, and you're eating already! You disrespect my cooking!"
"I didn't eat your food!" Kakashi retorted, staring back with his dead eyes. Pointing at the food on the table, he continued, "Your soldier pills, and my brother's medium-rare steak."
Muzan, watching the father and son bicker, smiled and sat down. His body's changes had become perfect, and he no longer needed much food. Even fasting for days wouldn't affect him.
However, Muzan required regular blood intake, whether human or animal.
To avoid suspicion, he claimed anemia. Every so often, Sakumo would take Muzan to the hospital for blood transfusions.
Sakumo had consulted Tsunade, but Konoha's top medic couldn't find the cause of Muzan's condition, attributing it to a bloodline defect. The special diet was merely a cover.
As they ate, Sakumo put down his chopsticks and stared at his sons. He believed they would excel at the Academy with steady training.
For Muzan, the key was avoiding sunlight at all costs.
"Kakashi, take care of Muzan at school. His condition is still critical."
Kakashi, usually quick to argue, agreed solemnly. He was most concerned about Muzan. Once, he saw Muzan in the sun, and the uncovered areas began to smoke.
"Don't worry, I'll protect Muzan."
"You boys..."
This was the bond of family, but Muzan no longer needed protection. With time, his power would only grow stronger.
Regarding the sunlight and blood intake, Muzan planned to become a medical ninja.
---
Regarding chakra extraction, Hatake Sakumo hadn't taught Muzan before. Now that Muzan's body had significantly strengthened, Sakumo decided to instruct him in the Hatake family's unique chakra extraction technique.
The chakra extraction method taught by the Ninja Academy was basic, whereas each major clan had its own advanced techniques. This was why clan ninjas generally surpassed civilian ninjas in strength.
After finishing the meal, Hatake Sakumo led his two children to the Ninja Academy. A large number of students had gathered outside, ready for the entrance exams.
Muzan saw many familiar faces, though they all looked like little children now. Asuma, Might Guy, Kurenai Yuhi, Rin Nohara, Obito Uchiha... They were the future Twelve Guardians of Konoha.
"Sakumo-sama, I didn't expect you to bring your children to school," a former subordinate remarked. Not all children could become students of the Ninja Academy, but Konoha's White Fang's children certainly could.
"Yes," Sakumo replied, pushing his sons forward. "I'll leave these two boys in your care, Nobuwei."
The entrance exam lasted an hour, focusing on physical fitness and basic knowledge. As descendants of ninjas, Muzan and Kakashi could easily enter through connections, but they still took the exam. Based on their scores, several were assigned to the same class.
"Hello everyone, I am Shouye Ten. I like eating takoyaki and dream of becoming Hokage!"
(A/N:- don't mind him)
"Hello everyone, my name is Hatake Muzan. I like drinking blood and hate sunlight. My dream is to become a medical ninja."
After Muzan mentioned drinking blood, combined with his blood-red eyes under the black clothes, the front-row children were frightened to tears.
"You idiot brother!" Kakashi covered his face with a book, fearing others would associate him with Muzan.
Even Nobuwei, standing at the podium, was taken aback by Muzan's introduction. "You actually made Kurenai cry!"
Asuma rushed over, ready to teach Muzan a lesson. The moment he swung his fist, Kakashi instinctively reacted, his body enveloped in chakra.
"Snap!"
"Ow!"
Muzan caught Asuma's arm with one hand, immobilizing him. This gesture stunned Kakashi, who had rushed to intervene.
"When did brother become so strong?"
"That's enough. This is a classroom, not a battleground. Everyone, copy the Will of Fire ten times!" Nobuwei declared.
"Sensei Nobuwei, I was just joking with Asuma-san," Muzan said, releasing Asuma and returning to his seat under the awe-struck gazes of the other children.
"Since Muzan Hatake wants to become a medical ninja, he must work several times as hard as ordinary people. More importantly, he must have a kind heart," Nobuwei advised. Though he didn't put much stock in Muzan's dream, since medical ninjas were often overlooked despite their crucial role. Only Tsunade's existence had prevented many from dismissing the medical ninja entirely.
"Let's start class now!" Nobuwei announced.
The first lesson was not about chakra extraction or kunai throwing techniques but the fundamentals of Konoha, the key to the Hokage legacy: The Will of Fire.
Muzan lay on the table, bored. He was indifferent to Konoha's indoctrination, focused only on his experiments. To him, the Will of Fire, meant to unite Konoha, was now a distorted concept. During the Third Ninja War, it had become a tool to send young genin to the frontlines, children who were often unprepared for battle.
The Will of Fire's radiant warmth couldn't illuminate Konoha's decay and darkness.
As Nobuwei recounted Konoha's history, he highlighted the First and Second Hokage, and most importantly, the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen.
Asuma, inspired by his father's glory, showed off his fists to Kurenai. "This is my dad!"
"Ahem, remember, you are a student here," Nobuwei admonished, hitting Asuma on the head with a ruler. When he mentioned Konoha's White Fang, everyone turned to look at Muzan, shrouded in black clothes.
Is he really Hatake Sakumo's son?
Without Kakashi beside him, they might have doubted Muzan's lineage. No one, except Kakashi and Sakumo, had seen Muzan's face beneath the black clothes. He was even more reserved than the Aburame clan.
Uchiha Obito leaned closer to Muzan, trying to peek at him. He was also Hatake Sakumo's son. One was a recognized genius with five chakra nature affinities, the other seemed like a weakling.
"Kakashi, is he really your brother?"
"What do you think?" Kakashi distanced himself, looking disgusted. "I hate weaklings."
"Bastard Kakashi! I'm going to duel you!" Obito declared, only to be swiftly subdued and beaten by Kakashi.
Nobuwei watched the children brawl, regretting his decision to retire from active duty. Teaching these kids was tougher than any mission.
"Since you're all so energetic, let's move to the playground. I'll teach you how to throw kunai!" Nobuwei led the class outside.
He demonstrated kunai throwing techniques, emphasizing that kunai, combined with limited chakra, could be deadly on the battlefield. Tying explosive tags to kunai could even take down a jounin.
"Uchiha Obito! Your clan is renowned for its kunai skills. Please demonstrate."
"What?" Obito, bewildered, took the kunai. Despite being an Uchiha, he was just a beginner. His throws missed their marks, landing outside the target area.
"The current Obito is indeed weak," Muzan muttered. Nobuwei, with his ninja hearing, caught the comment.
"If you think he's weak, then you demonstrate," Nobuwei challenged, handing Muzan a kunai.
Muzan took the kunai expressionlessly. Kakashi worried Muzan would embarrass himself, having never trained as a ninja.
"Yes, sensei."
