Merry Christmas! Start from Chapter 176!
Chapter Text
"Hmm… Hey Penny?" Ruby asked quietly, rubbing her chin as the two of them sat there on the rooftop of the Xiao Long/Rose/Branwen household, Ruby sitting firmly in Penny's lap as her girlfriend cuddled her from behind and gently squeezed at Ruby's belly.
"Yes, beloved? What is it?" Penny asked in return, continuing to gently squeeze and poke at Ruby's belly with gentle ministrations, finding the soft flesh adorably pliant and soft despite the core of simulated, steel hard muscle beneath the layer of false flesh. Like her own abdomen, but made of grimm matter and not metal and silicone. She rested her chin softly atop Ruby's crown, smiling as she felt Ruby's ears flick against her cheeks.
She kind of missed Ruby's mask, honestly, but ever since she'd come out of that crystal, it had more or less entirely disappeared. Ruby hadn't seemed to really notice, but Penny still liked the bone construct when it reacted to Ruby's emotions.
"It's just… Cinder just proposed to Neo and Emerald, and I heard Weiss n' Blake n' Yang all talk about marriage as well… and I just got to thinking about how… fast life as a Huntsman or a Huntress is, y'know? Like… since it's so easy to just… go out on a mission one day and not come back, a lot of Huntsmen and Huntresses don't really get into relationships except to have a kid and then just go… it's such a cruel thing, I think. Especially when it's with civilians and people who don't really know how the lifestyle works. And the Huntsmen and Huntresses that do get into long lasting relationships just… tend to only do so with other Hunters. And I just keep thinking…" Ruby shrugs, letting her Aura pulse with emotion and feeling Penny's against her own- a sharing of information so deep and instinctual that they were completely, totally in sync for those brief pulses against each other.
"That you wonder how our relationship will develop over time, as two synthetic beings bonded together by the strength of our remaining souls?" Penny suggested lightly, finishing Ruby's sentence for her as the words flowed in her mind without hesitation- a swirl of crimson Aura blending with hers in iridescent rainbow patterns as she spoke.
"Yeah. I wonder if we'll start talking about marriage soon… I mean, we've already gone through a lot of stuff really fast… everyone says our soul bond is way stronger and more intense than almost anyone else's that they've seen- even dad and mom never had anything so intense, and Uncle Qrow's and… Raven's… broke a long time ago cuz they weren't communicating anymore. I mean, I guess Yang n' Blake n' Weiss have a really strong one too but it's… ours is weird," Ruby muttered, gently taking Penny's hand and joining their palms together with a little huff, a smile on her face as their fingers entwined and their Auras melded further together- fusing in a way into something new. Rainbow colored, iridescent. A golden light bound in silver and red and green and carrying with it the scent of fresh rebirth- spring and plants and new growth and the coming of a new day.
"We have performed feats of Aura synchronization that most would consider fantastical at best, unbelievable at worst," Penny murmured quietly, pressing a soft kiss into Ruby's hair and humming as her hand squeezed Ruby's, glittering gently in the moonlight above. Her green painted nails matched perfectly with Ruby's red nails- both of them having spent a whole several hours painting each other's nails and laughing as they danced around in Ruby's room once dinner was over and the majority of the guests had gone home. "I wielded Crescent Rose… during the Cataclysm. And you were there with me the entire time. Our Auras worked together and… I used your Silver Eyes. I am… still unsure as to how I managed that, but…"
"Because our Auras were so in sync, I think. Because you're the bestest girlfriend in the entire world and because I love you, and because we both wanted to protect our friends, our families, the innocent people that the grimm were trying to take. We wanted the same thing and… I guess our souls did the rest," Ruby shrugged, smiling up at Penny and humming a little under her breath as she reached up and gently stroked the tattoos now permanently etched into Penny's skin- a green version of her own red markings, exactly the same as Ruby's, though the natural eyeshadow was toned down slightly. She looked… a little wild. Carefree. Beautiful. Her skin gleamed in the moonlight and her freckles pulsed with the assurance that she was alive and beautiful and-
"An angel," they both murmured at the same time, looking at each other with purest adoration in their eyes- emerald green glittering like gems as they glowed in the soft moonlight, silver and gold gleaming like mirrors as the moon shone down upon them. "You look like an angel…"
There was a momentary pause as they both froze- hands on each other's cheeks, stroking the brilliantly colored whisker marks that stood out so much from their natural skin tone. Penny's fingers gently brushed against vivid red, the markings slightly raised like a layer of blood plastered permanently against bone white skin. Ruby's fingers slid across vibrant green, the texture of the tattoos ever so slightly rougher from the smooth, soft, almost velvety synthetic skin around them.
"... You're an angel," Ruby whispered, eyes shimmering with adoration and affection while her Aura pulsed like a heartbeat and her own body writhed internally with the overwhelming feeling of love love love love love . "You're my angel."
"And you're my angel," Penny answered, eyes focusing eagerly on Ruby's face, capturing every last bit of those moon soaked brilliant details, the soft glow of their eyes fading into the darkness of midnight as they lost themselves in each other's eyes. "You've been my angel ever since the day we first became friends. My Wishing Star."
"And you've been my angel just as long… you light up my life, Firefly," Ruby giggled happily, slowly shifting her position and scooting upwards as she turned around and straddled Penny's legs properly so they could look at each other directly instead of the awkward position before. "You're my beautiful, amazing, strong, sensitive, giggly little firefly and I love you so, so much!"
"Ruby-!" Penny grinned, unable to stop herself as she wiggled around as Ruby engulfed her in a hug and planted a loud, wet smooch on her cheek. "No you're the beautiful and amazing one, wishing star! I love you more!"
"Nuh uh! I love you the most!"
"And I love you more than that!"
"You can't do that, when I already love you more than anything else in the world!" Ruby nuzzled Penny eagerly, both of them giggling and rolling around as they play wrestled with each other atop the slanted roof, laughing happily as they hugged and kissed and rolled around amongst the snow and shingles, lit by moonlight and feeling as though everything was right in the world.
"Oh really? More than cookies? More than anyone else?" Penny challenged, teasing Ruby as she planted a gentle kiss against the tip of her beloved's nose and giggled at the laughter Ruby let out.
"Cookies are good in the moment, but you're good forever! So of course I love you more!" Ruby answered back, Aura pulsing cheerfully and producing an overwhelming amount of rose petals that scattered into the air in iridescent rainbow patterns that fell around the house like snowfall- petals drifting gently down and glowing in the light of the moon and from within. "I want to be with you forever and ever and ever!"
"I'll be with you forever and ever and ever, then!" Penny almost shouted, hugging Ruby close and squeezing her tight. "As long as you'll have me and even after- always the two of us, together forever!"
"We'll be protectors of each other," Ruby murmured, overwhelmed by the sheer, overwhelming rush of emotions going through her soul as she buried herself into Penny's shoulder and nuzzled into her favorite spot in the whole wide world, clinging onto her taller girlfriend like a limpet as her cloak enveloped them both in warmth and blood red fabric that pulsed as if alive.
"Together forever," Penny nodded, cradling Ruby gently and smiling softly as their previous excitement wound down and they simply basked in the warmth of each other's souls- feeling how their other half pulsed with love love love love love . The love of friendship, the love of life, the love of knowing that the other was alive , the love of their families, the love of each other.
Ruby and Penny cradled their souls together, knowing full well how much of a grasp they each had on the other's soul, how deeply they were entwined to the point that pulling apart was nigh impossible at this point. They saw each other's joy, their happiness. The little things- every small moment of happiness between each other. They saw their worries and concerns, they saw those little bumps and dings and sensitive parts of their minds and emotions. They saw the good and the bad, the happy and the sad, and they loved each other even more for it.
"... Do you want to get married one day, though? Not now… but…" Ruby shrugged a little.
Penny just continued smiling, gently patting Ruby's head. "Perhaps one day. When we're older, wiser. A little more experienced. But what we have now is perfect already."
"It really is… I don't wanna ever let you go, Penny."
"Neither do I, Ruby."
Their lips met in a soft, gentle kiss, and all was right in the-
"WILL YOU TWO PLEASE GET OFF THE ROOF AND GO TO BED!?" Yang cried, throwing a flaming slipper vaguely in the direction of the roof whereupon it extinguished itself in a pile of snow. "Why are you shouting love confessions at two in the morning!? You're already basically married as it is!"
"Sorry Yang!"
