"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! IT'S BEEN A HARD, TROUBLESOME YEAR FOR EVERYONE BUT VALE HAS BOUNCED BACK AND WE'RE STRONGER FOR IT! WE WELCOME YOU ALL TO THE REDO OF THE FORTIETH BI-ANNUAL VYTAL FESTIVAL! IT'S GOING TO BE AN AMAZING EVENT THIS YEAR- ALL SORTS OF THINGS ARE HAPPENING AND IT'S GUARANTEED TO BE QUITE THE SPECTACLE!" the voice of Professor Port boomed across the entire fairgrounds from within the Amity Colosseum's broadcasting systems, the massive speakers embedded on the outside of the floating arena itself letting everyone outside hear the statement, while those who had already taken their seats within the colosseum chattered about as they waited for the main attraction to start.
Deep in the waiting rooms, Team RWBYP sat in a group around their team's designated waiting area- Yang snacking on a granola bar from the basket on the table, Blake honing Gambol Shroud's edge and humming as the Dust infused metal sang with every stroke of the whetstone, Weiss charging her scroll while finishing off a bowl of curry that she'd gotten from one of the vendors outside, Ruby very deliberately placing a whole metric fuckton of extremely oversized, high caliber bullets into a hazardous materials container and sealing it up because she really didn't want to be responsible for putting a hole through someone… or the entire stadium, and Penny… Penny was finishing the last of her maintenance as she screwed in a few last minute component replacements in her hand and sealed the synthetic skin covering over the closed panel once she'd finished up.
"So… this is it. Wonder what order we're going up in," Yang hummed, pursing her lips as she waited for the bracket announcement to happen. "There's a lot of extra teams this year, and they've restructured everything to go twice as long and twice as hard. Teams, Trios, Doubles, Singles, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and Finals… it's gonna be a long, hard journey to the top, isn't it?"
"There's no real reason to fear. Honestly, the way they've structured everything actually makes it quite useful for us, for at least the Trio and Double rounds," Weiss pointed out as she set her paper bowl into the trash with a quiet yet dignified burp, starting to file her nails while they continued to wait. "We can go in the Trio round, and then Ruby and Penny can go for the doubles. There's also not much chance that we'll lose , unless someone destroys the stage too much and we're disqualified for some reason or another."
".... See, I'd hope that the ones destroying the stage in this case were Ruby and Penny, but I'm pretty sure you two can do it too now," Blake pointed out, very carefully ignoring the fact that she'd recently figured out how to mix a certain few Dust ratios into her Shadow clones now to allow them to explode with such force that it was like one of Ruby's old anti-aircraft rounds.
Blake quietly felt grateful that Ruby had worked a proper Dust based silencer into Crescent Rose at some point, because her maximum round size now was on par with… Nora's… grenades…
She paused, then shook her head. They should have been here with them, if not to win then at least to enjoy the festivities. To feel like their efforts had accomplished something, not to still be… gone. Even so.
Ruby's rounds were far too large and far too powerful now. If Ruby hadn't installed that silencer, then her shots would be literally eardrum bursting instead of "only" as loud as a 50 caliber rifle.
"Hey, I'm not that bad," Weiss protested weakly, ignoring the fact that she could summon some of the worst of Menagerie's grimm now, as well as a full sized Arma Gigas… and enhance them with Dust as well. "If anything, Yang is the real problem when she Burns White…"
"Yeah, and I only do that when I need to… or if it's gonna be really baller. I can control my damage output," Yang snorted, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes at her girlfriends. "Either way, we should actually make sure we're ready for our first fight, right? Don't wanna stumble right at the starting line, do we?"
"Right! I know we're all gonna win, but we gotta make sure we all look really cool doing it!" Ruby stated, grinning brightly as she set her box of horrifically powerful ammunition to the side and swapped out her magazine in Crescent Rose for one that was slightly smaller and less threatening looking… though the massive gun scythe was… horrifying to look at for a number of reasons. Mostly because it was just… too big to be called reasonable or sane, and too powerful to call anything other than a cannon. "So! We need to talk about who we're gonna be fighting! Obviously, it's gonna be one of the five man teams that have joined this year. There's only six of us total, so we've got five options for who we're gonna fight! Team SLATE, Team OXIDE, Team HLGEN (Halogen), Team MROON (Maroon), and Team ZZNCK (Zinc)! All of them are third or fourth year teams, and their combat scores are really high in their respective Academies- MROON is near the top of Atlas Academy, HLGEN is the top team in their year in Shade, ZZNCK was top of the class at Haven, but since it got destroyed partway through their school year they're still counted as fourth years, SLATE is top of their class at Oasis- a smaller Academy in one of the Mistral adjacent areas, and OXIDE is third best at Cove, which is actually one of the Academies in Vale proper… sorta? It's one of the smaller ones up north near the wealthy district."
"... We can probably write off OXIDE then. Cove students are usually just rich pansies that get hired to protect corporate shipments in safe areas," Yang snorted, crossing her arms. "I remember being in a tournament with a guy who got accepted to Cove once. He went down in one punch."
"A regular punch or a punch with Ember Celica on?" Blake deadpanned.
"... A regular punch, weirdly enough. His aura shattered really fast… then again, he did piss me off to activate Burn even without Ember Celica on. He uh… had a disarming Semblance, if I remember right," Yang shrugged, then leaned back in her seat. "So, SLATE, HLGEN, ZZNCK, and MROON, huh? Anyone know anything about the other Academies that we can use?"
"Well, the ones from Atlas are, on average, extremely professional and militaristic. They'll have well thought out tactics and team formations with extremely precise aim with long range weaponry and likely some method of suppressing fire. Now, I've learned that it's not always the case, as it is with Team FNKI on the field, but Team MROON will likely not break the mold more than Team FNKI, given that Team FNKI is, according to Winter, the wild ones from the current batch of students. I have no other information, but generally speaking- if we disrupt their formations and scatter them while they're off balance, they won't be able to react in time," Weiss answered, pausing for a moment with a little grin on her face. "Especially if we keep throwing out our own team attacks on the fly. Now- it is likely we'll take some hits in the fight, but if we keep an eye on our own Aura levels and none of us are disqualified via Aura loss or ring out, then we'll still have a full set for the Trio rounds and the Double rounds."
"Right. A few of my White Fang comrades at the time washed out of Oasis- we spent a lot of time in Mistral before coming to Vale. They couldn't make it to Haven, and they couldn't cut it at Oasis. Either because of the overt racism or because of their own lack of conviction. I learned a lot from them, before Ilia and I managed to sneak into Haven's server rooms and snag their training documentation for free," Blake explained slowly, pursing her lips as she thought back to her past. "Oasis teams don't have a theme to them, a lot are just thrown together and leadership is decided on whoever's best suited to leading in any given situation. It's distributed and effective in the field, but it also means that we won't be able to throw them into disarray like we will MROON. SLATE will be a challenge in terms of tactics, but they might not be in terms of strength- especially considering they favor a more… assassin-like approach."
"My data on Team ZZNCK states that they favor a brutal approach based on overwhelming opponents with superior strength, speed, and numbers. While their skills are impressive, they overcompensate with their variety of generic strength and speed based Semblances- including Kin Argent, their leader, who has the Semblance Silver Feet , which allows him to move at high speeds and even run on air or upside down for true 3D movement," Penny cut in, then hummed as she reviewed the combat data flashing in her HUD before nodding to herself. "They will not be a problem. We are stronger, faster, and have a more coherent team strategy than their usual approach of 'hit it until it is dead'. If we face them first, it will likely be easy, unless their approach has changed in the intervening months."
"Anyone know anything about Team HLGEN?" Ruby asked, receiving a chorus of negatives in response- even from Penny, who just shrugged and tilted her head. "Wait- really?"
"Shade academy has a distributed student information network that is not public nor is it feasible for me to attempt opening it with the clearance bestowed upon me by Specialist Schnee. Regardless, while their combat scores give them decent odds to win, our own as a team leaves them in the dust, beloved," Penny giggled as she stood up and walked over to her girlfriend.
Yang snorted, rolling her neck as Ember Celica flared to life, Blake and Weiss following suit as they rose together and activated their weapons in turn. "So. How're we gonna do this Rubes? What do you think we're gonna do?"
Ruby grinned, while Penny stood behind her and hugged their fearless Team Leader from behind.
"We're gonna fight… and we're gonna win."
