Chapter 127
Notes:
the Situation continues
Chapter Text
"Oh good… we're all alive," Yang groaned as she pushed the rubble off of her body, coughing and feeling much like she'd just been hit by a truck. Given the force of the explosion, she felt pretty lucky that she only felt like she'd been hit by a truck. "Fuck… that didn't go as expected, huh?"
"Guh…" Blake groaned rather pathetically, wincing as she pulled herself up from where she had been all but crushed beneath Yang, uncurling from her curled up position and shaking her head as she tried really, really hard to not throw up all over Weiss, who was laying in a shallow divot beneath both of them because both Blake and Yang had thrown themselves on top of their mutual girlfriend to try and shield her from the blast and subsequent cave in when the dragon thing had broken loose. "Fuck… I need a few…. Ears are ringing like hell… oh gods…"
"Hnng… think my leg is broken… pretty sure I'm deaf in one ear… where's Penny? A-and Ruby…?" Weiss asked, wincing as she shuffled herself out of said divot with a clearly broken lower leg, the limb itself bent at an odd angle that meant there was no way in hell she was walking anytime soon.
"She's… guh… Ruby's not around… couldn't feel her Aura in the shields… can't see her- think she might be with Penny? Heard her say something before everything went to shit," Yang answered, breathing heavily and grimacing as she ripped a hunk of bone from her shoulder, the fragment of grimmstuff dissolving away in her hand while she cauterized the wound with a flash of her Semblance. "Fuck… where's Uncle Qrow? And Professor Goodwitch? I didn't see Ruby shield them in time!"
"Right here kiddo. Probably doing better than you are, too," Qrow answered, appearing from seemingly nowhere as he landed with the sound of rustling feathers- he stumbled slightly, off balance and leaning on Harbinger II as though it was a cane, but he and Professor Goodwitch seemed more or less fine, if a bit scorched and sunburnt. Everyone took stock for a moment, trying to figure out just what the hell happened- the last thing Yang remembered was Ruby shouting for everyone to take cover before bone shield sprouted out of nowhere- Ruby really was good at making them ever since she and Nora had blown a hole in the school last semester. It had barely held, and then it had become unrooted from the ground and all of them had gotten thrown around and now they were… in the city? How did they manage to get back to the surface of Mountain Glenn? "Glynda over there's better at shielding explosions than anyone else alive. We were fine… saw you three get tossed around though. Penny's alive, fighting off that giant monster outside. It's heading to Vale now but… I think it's going to be okay."
He paused, frowning as he kneeled down and took stock of everyone's injuries- his Aura flashing against theirs in turn before he reached out and yanked Weiss' leg back into place with a sickening crunch, splinting it with a length of metal that he'd found nearby and setting it so her Aura wouldn't heal it wrong.
He ignored the scream and subsequent shouts of shock and surprise from Yang and Blake, standing up straight even while the three girls fretted and fussed and Weiss nearly passed out from the sudden blast of pain. "Everyone get up, we can't stay here. There's gonna be grimm everywhere and they're all gonna be pissed. Glynda and I can handle 'em, probably. Yang, carry Weiss. Blake, be our rear guard. We gotta fight our way to Penny while the dragon's still grounded."
"M…ight not… be for… much longer," Glynda pointed out with a raspy, rough voice- barely audible from behind the strip of fabric she'd wrapped around her mouth, peering off into the distance to the writhing shape of black and red and green that the three girls thus far hadn't noticed with one of them being mostly deaf, another being half deaf, and the third fretting more over her girlfriends than she was paying attention to the world around her. She pointed at the wings barely visible in the distance, ear splitting screeches and rumbles emanating from the dragon's location as green lights flashed around it and punched holes into the massive red membranes. "… Starting to heal… faster… than Polendina can do damage… she can't hold on forever… need to move now. Where is... Rose?"
"Dunno, couldn't find her and her Aura isn't anywhere nearby," Qrow answered, motioning for the girls to follow as they began making their way to the fight. He fired Harbinger II repeatedly, moving slower than he normally would because of his own myriad of minor injuries plus the depletion of his Aura. "I don't think this is like that situation at the warehouse. She might just be recovering slowly from taking a lot of damage."
"How do you know?" Yang asked, struggling a bit as she carried Weiss in her arms, biting her lip in worry every time a particularly large stumble in her steps caused Weiss to whimper in pain- with her Aura shattered protecting Blake and Weiss, and Weiss Aura gone from the subsequent treatment of their safety bubble as a pinball, there was no way she'd heal up or recover anytime soon. Not with the amount of grimm everywhere. Not when they didn't have any way to get back to a safe area. Not until they could get food, medical attention, and a few days or weeks of sleep. "Shit… Dammit Rubes, you'd better be okay…"
"I know because she's had to do something similar before. Big Dust explosion when she was… twelve, I think. Bandits tried to take her out in a suicide play. She survived, but it took her more than a while to fully recover. Something like this… dunno. Could be a while. We just gotta find whatever left of her is still around," Qrow answered, continuing to attack and destroy every grimm that came rushing at them- there weren't too many, thank the gods, but there were too many for comfort, and all of them seemed to be heading to Vale. How Penny was managing to slow down the dragon was beyond his reckoning. He hoped Ruby was with her, but he couldn't hear the familiar, overwhelming sound of Crescent Rose firing.
At his side, Glynda stayed roughly silent, notably more disheveled than anyone had seen her in years, to the point that the reason for her relative silence revealed itself once a Griffon managed to get too close and barely nicked the fabric off of her face with a claw before getting blasted. She'd taken a nasty burn across a large portion of her lower face- nothing to the point of being irreparable but… she'd likely scar, and the amount of blood…
Yang tried not to be sick looking around furtively as they continued to make their way over and grimacing as she and Weiss pretended that they didn't feel useless- Yang unable to fight without rendering Weiss' injuries even more severe than they were, Weiss unable to fight due to her completely drained Aura and lack of Dust.
At least Myrtenaster was still intact, though how long it would remain that way was… up for debate.
Blake, meanwhile, held up the rear and made sure to keep her girlfriends safe, Gambol Shroud firing again and again as she ran through every bullet she had left.
"We're getting close," Qrow almost shouted as they got closer, the sounds of screeching and roaring almost deafening them as they reached the limits of Mountain Glenn and came upon the ruins of what had once probably been a bunch of White Fang vehicles- mostly abandoned, some destroyed, a large amount damaged around the doors and wheels, and with a lot of bodies strewn around.
Qrow grimaced, then shook his head as a massive thud shook the land, sending birds into the sky and shaking the trees around them to the point that it was almost impossible to stay standing- not with how low their Auras were. "We have to keep moving- Yang, Blake, Weiss! Go back to Vale as fast as you can! Get Weiss some help! Glynda and I will help Penny!"
"But- Uncle Qrow your Aura's gotta be just as low as ours! You'll die!" Yang spluttered, not wanting to abandon her uncle or her teacher- especially not in the middle of a crisis like this. "We all need to grab Penny and get back to Vale and then- and then-"
"And then what!? Just go! Glynda and I are adults, we can take care of ourselves! Penny is out there alone and you can't help! We need to hold that damn thing off until someone gets off their asses and blows it to kingdom come! So grab a car and go!" Qrow shouted, slicing open a path in the treeline for emphasis and pointing at one of the still serviceable vehicles that didn't have a corpse in it… even if the doors had been ripped off. "Argue later, defer to the senior Huntsman now!"
He shook his head, motioning for Glynda to follow. Glynda nodded in assent, motioning towards the vehicle with a serious gaze.
They went, but not without a long, terrible moment where the three girls all felt as though they were abandoning their missing leader and their fifth member.
None of them wanted to go… but they had to. Weiss was down a leg, Blake's combat efficiency was down due to her full body bruises and lingering tinnitus, and Yang's Aura was so low from using her Semblance to absorb as much impact as possible that a single hit could probably take her out at this point.
They left, driving towards Vale as fast as they could down the barely there dirt road and focusing more on suppressing their emotions than anything else.
Qrow sighed, nodding at Glynda again. "Ready for this?"
Glynda nodded, holding her riding crop up and rolling her neck.
"Yeah. Shit, if we die Tai's gonna kill me."
"If you die… I'll kill you."
"Heh… Guess we'd better survive then."
