章 44: Chapter 44 – Danger all around

A raging beast, an anxious army, and a chaotic battle… This is what is happening right now in the territory of the poisonous snake that has suddenly evolved into a flood dragon.
As the espers threw everything they got to the large creature, the flood dragon also began attacking the humans.
So far no casualties have resulted yet as the espers are really good at fighting. Those who are able to fight in the front lines are leading the assault. Meanwhile, those who are not yet proficient in fighting have stayed behind while grabbing the opportunity to learn from this battle.
Melissa Monte Mayor (Tempest) has been really active in this battle with her impressive power. It's like she was born to fight these kinds of strong monsters and that even if she is alone she is able to easily defeat the huge dragon-like creature.
Tornadoes, fireballs, lightning strikes, ice spikes, and earth spears, are all over the place as the espers control their power in attacking the flood dragon.
However, it seems that elemental attacks are not effective against it. Only Tempest's wind blades and tornados can cause it some considerable damage.
As the battle rages on, many espers have started to run to the side as only five figures are in the middle of the battle. Some of the espers have already gotten wounded from the debris and excess powers coming from the clash of energies from Tempest and the Flood Dragon.
The flood dragon was suddenly hit by a powerful blast of compressed wind that Tempest suddenly sent.
This blast of wind is like a compressed air grenade that suddenly fell and hit its belly as the dragon slithers on the ground to attack tempest.
Roar!
The flood dragon suddenly rampages as it feels the pain that hit it. It then angrily glared at Tempest as it inhaled a huge amount of air making it coil back and its neck suddenly bulges.
On the battleground, Jenny Mae did not hide. She is still fighting as she constantly threw out fireballs hitting the dragon's head. Surrounding the beast along with her and Tempest are Vipercrown and the other two leaders of the other mercenary groups.
"That girl is really feisty…" Vipercrown said while looking at Jenny Mae and then glancing at the tall woman beside him.
"Don't ever think about it. She is one of the aces of my team." The woman suddenly warned him with a glare.
Following Jenny Mae's lead, the other three continue attacking the beast.
But it just made the beast feel annoyed as it suddenly shifted its head and then turn towards Jenny Mae.
"No! Firebraid! Run!" shouted the woman.
But it was all too late. A stream of poisonous green acid suddenly flew towards Jenny Mae in almost an instant.
Tempest wanted to make a move but she knew that if she blew that acid off, it would hit the others around them. So her hands were tied.
Alan Kane who is hiding on the side wanted to help, but his legs were frozen in fear and he has been shivering ever since the battle has started.
Everyone knew that it was too late for the brave esper, but everyone could see that Jenny Mae did not flinch, she stares at the incoming acid stream.
They all can see her bravely faces her impending doom without batting an eye. However, no one knew that deep inside Jenny Mae is already frozen in fear. When she saw the monster tilting its head towards her, she knew that she was done for.
She wanted to run or dodge, but her fear held her in place.
However, since she could not move and feel helpless, she just showed a brave look on her face.
It is said that your life would flash before you when you are about to die. And as she is facing her fate, she suddenly recalls everything about her life.
It all started with her happy childhood, then her simple life and loving mother. When it was found that she was an esper, she first hid it from her parents. And then the nightmare that she kept inside her heart happened.
It was one late afternoon around 5 pm, after school, she went home. Then that night her brother and his friends are drinking outside their small house. At that time, her older sister and other siblings weren't home and her mother and father are still outside.
After coming home, she changes her school uniform. While taking her clothes off, she didn't know that her brother is walking by her room still tipsy from drinking.
She didn't know that her brother has slowly opened the door of her room. As soon as he saw her half-naked body, some evil thoughts suddenly entered his mind as he suddenly rushes inside the room. This action surprised her a lot and did not expect that her brother would do such a thing.
Helpless and weak, she was pushed down on the bed. Then suddenly as she wanted to fight back a strong blow hit her stomach taking all of her strength away.
She saw the desire and the sinister gaze of her brother at that time. She could not forget his face and that look. She was scared, she was terrified, and she was despairing. But no one came to her rescue. She can feel her skirt being pulled up and her underwear being slowly removed.
She can feel that hot breath on her neck which made her sick to her bone.
Suddenly for some unknown reason, something burst out from her heart, a strong and powerful force coming from her deep within her heart.
And when that power came, a strong gust of wind suddenly surrounded her and it causes her brother to be blown towards the wall. And upon hitting the wall he fainted.
She was confused, angry, and has the desire to kill inside of her.
Suddenly, the door of her room flung open and the people who saw the scene showed a horrified look on their faces. It was like they are all seeing a monster.
'I am not a monster… don't look at me like that!' she wanted to shout at those people.
But she didn't say anything. She just picks her stuff put on a shirt.
While doing this, her mother shouted at her and blames her for what happened to her brother. She was hurt, she was desperate, but no one helped her. And now that she was able to defend herself, she was blamed?
Her young mind developed a trauma from then on, as she runs away from home.
From then on, she stayed out and became a recluse. When her power was activated she was taken by the government and was trained to be an esper since high school.
Then she remembers the day she reached college and her smooth life after. She had crushes but kept it inside of her heart as she didn't know how to interact with the opposite sex.
And then she recalled that simple young man who helped her in one of her missions where she was wounded badly, in the capital city of the country.
That young man did not ask anything of her. After staying for a while, she decided to fix her interpersonal life and since the young man is a safe bet for her she decided on a whim to make him her boyfriend.
And from then on, the two of them started a simple relationship based on respect. But in her heart there is another person, he is the reason why she is practicing, and until now she could not open her heart to him.
However, she also did not want to hurt the kind young man which has helped her a lot. This complicated relationship has made her decide to limit the communication between the two of them. She is already preparing to break up with him, but she also didn't want to hurt him that much.
As her mind came to this point, she subconsciously shifted her gaze at the side of her eyes. From where she is standing everything is in slow motion. She could now see the approaching acid poison, but she didn't care anymore. In her mind, she is asking.
"Is he looking at me? Is he concerned about me? Will he cry for me?"
As her gaze saw that figure hiding behind a tree, her heart suddenly felt depressed. That is because she saw him cowering in fear and not even looking at her.
What she saw in her eyes, made her realized that she was just a fool. It was all her imagination. When they got in this place, he was bragging that he would protect her as her friend. Though she knew that he was just boosting, yet seeing him like this made her feel really disappointed.
Suddenly, her attention was caught by a glowing light which suddenly covers her body.
Everyone saw it. When the acid spit from the flood dragon was about to hit Firebraid, something suddenly came out of her body and protected her.
It was unexpected, and everyone was dumbfounded. They all thought that she was a goner and that she would be the first casualty in this battle. But who would have expected that such a magical thing would happen?
Jenny Mae was also surprised and unable to comprehend what is happening. She is currently inside a ball of light while covering her is a green liquid which is making a fizzing sound as it hit the ball of light.
She wanted to take a breather at this time as she knew that she has escaped the danger. She is still unable to move as the green liquid is still covering the ball of light surrounding her. She heaves a sigh of relief at this time for escaping that dangerous situation.
As she was about to relax and rely on the ball of light, she suddenly heard something. It was just a slight sound, but that sound made her heart suddenly stop. She roams her gaze around her and tried to listen carefully.
Then another of that sound can now be heard clearly.
That was the cracking sound of something that is about to break.
