100% My Cat is Overpowered / Chapter 11: A Plan in Motion

章 11: A Plan in Motion

The sun rose over Eldenwood with a hazy glow, painting the village in soft amber light. Lennox, however, was in no mood to appreciate the morning. The events of the previous day replayed in his mind—Sylra's warning, Marcus's brazen intrusion, and the looming sense that everything was spiraling out of control.

He sat at the table, absently chewing on a piece of bread while the Key of Whispers lay in front of him, its faint glow casting eerie shadows. The black cat was perched on the windowsill, its eyes half-closed but still alert, like it was waiting for something.

Lennox sighed, leaning back in his chair. "Alright, Cat. Let's think this through. I've got a magical key that everyone suddenly cares about, a half-elf girl telling me I'm in danger, and Marcus acting like he's the village's self-appointed sheriff. What's the next move?"

The cat opened one eye, flicked its tail, and went back to pretending it wasn't listening.

"Thanks for the input," Lennox muttered, rubbing his temples. He pushed the bread aside and stood, pacing the small room. "I need a plan. Something to keep the key safe—and keep me alive in the process."

The sound of knocking interrupted his thoughts, making him freeze. His first instinct was to grab the knife from the counter, but he hesitated. The knock wasn't loud or aggressive, just a soft, steady rhythm. After a moment, he moved cautiously to the door and opened it a crack.

Elara stood on the other side, her silver hair catching the morning light. Her expression was a mix of worry and determination.

"Morning, Lennox," she said, her voice calm but firm. "Can I come in?"

He nodded, stepping aside to let her in. The cat jumped down from the windowsill and padded to the table, sitting beside the key as if guarding it.

Elara glanced at the key, then back at Lennox. "So, I ran into Marcus this morning."

"Of course you did," Lennox groaned, shutting the door. "Let me guess—he was complaining about my 'dangerous magical artifact.'"

"More like bragging about how he's going to 'save the village from your reckless behavior,'" Elara said, her tone laced with sarcasm. "Honestly, that guy has an ego the size of a giant."

"Tell me about it," Lennox muttered, flopping into a chair. "What am I supposed to do, Elara? I didn't ask for any of this. Now I've got Marcus breathing down my neck, Sylra showing up with cryptic warnings, and this stupid key that won't stop glowing."

Elara sat across from him, her emerald eyes steady. "You need to get ahead of this, Lennox. If people think you're a threat, they'll start asking questions. And if the wrong people get involved…"

"I know," Lennox said, running a hand through his hair. "But what am I supposed to do? Hide the key? Pretend it doesn't exist?"

"Neither," Elara said firmly. "You don't hide something like that. You use it."

Lennox blinked. "Use it? How? I don't even know what it does."

"That's what you need to figure out," Elara said. She leaned forward, her voice dropping. "Look, the key chose you for a reason. Maybe it's dangerous, maybe it's powerful, but either way, it's better in your hands than anyone else's. You just need to find out what it's meant for."

Lennox stared at her, her words sinking in. It made sense—more sense than anything else he'd heard so far. But the thought of delving deeper into the mystery of the key filled him with equal parts dread and curiosity.

"And how do you suggest I do that?" he asked.

Elara hesitated, glancing at the cat. "What about the Elder? He knows more about magic than anyone in the village."

"I already went to him," Lennox said. "He told me the key is part of a Binding Contract. Something about tasks I have to complete, but he didn't have any details."

"Then maybe you need to start with the first task," Elara said. "What was it? Something about whispers?"

"'Find the Key of Whispers in the Grove of Echoes,'" Lennox recited. "Which I already did."

"Then there's probably more to it," Elara said. "Contracts like that don't just stop at one task. There's probably a way to unlock the next part."

Lennox glanced at the key, its glow pulsing faintly. "Great. So I have to figure out how to make it talk."

Before Elara could respond, the cat stood and began pacing the table. Its movements were deliberate, almost purposeful, and it circled the key twice before sitting back down, its tail curling neatly around its paws.

"Okay, that's creepy," Lennox said, staring at the cat. "What are you doing?"

The cat tilted its head, then reached out a paw and tapped the key. The faint glow intensified for a moment, and Lennox swore he heard a faint whisper—not from the key, but from the air around it.

Elara leaned forward, her eyes wide. "Did you hear that?"

"Yeah," Lennox said, his voice barely above a whisper. "What was it?"

The cat tapped the key again, and this time the whisper grew louder, forming words that sent a chill down Lennox's spine.

"The Path Awaits."

Elara's breath hitched. "What does that mean?"

"I have no idea," Lennox said, his heart pounding. He picked up the key, its surface cool and humming with energy. The whispers faded, leaving behind an unsettling silence.

The cat sat back, its expression unreadable but almost smug. Lennox glared at it. "You knew this would happen, didn't you?"

The cat yawned, then leapt gracefully back to the windowsill.

Elara shook her head, her voice steady but urgent. "Lennox, this is it. The key is giving you a clue. You need to follow it."

"Follow it where?" Lennox asked, his frustration bubbling over. "It's not exactly a detailed map."

Elara stood, her expression resolute. "Then we figure it out. Together."

Lennox hesitated, the weight of everything pressing down on him again. But as he looked at Elara—her determination, her calm confidence—he felt a flicker of hope.

"Alright," he said, slipping the key into his pocket. "Let's figure it out."

Elara smiled, and for the first time in days, Lennox felt like he wasn't completely out of his depth. He glanced at the cat, who had curled up on the windowsill, its eyes half-closed.

"Don't think you're off the hook," Lennox muttered. "You're coming too."

The cat's tail flicked once, a silent acknowledgment—or maybe just indifference.

Lennox took a deep breath and opened the door, the cool morning air rushing in. The village lay quiet and peaceful, but beneath the surface, he knew, things were changing. He didn't know where the path would lead, but one thing was clear: he was already on it.
