章 139: Chapter 139 - The Apathetic Bodyguard

Fwoosh!

Letting go of the bowstring without so much as a warning, Lissa shot the Flaming Arrow directly towards the bodyguard.

From a third-party point of view, it was definitely too sudden. However, with the idea of having the people close to her risking their lives to fight, she couldn't stand idly by anymore.

The young Princess has chosen to become proactive.

Unfortunately for her, it had backfired.

Pulling out a long rod from his inventory, the bodyguard blocked the arrow with relative ease. From there, he pulled the weapon out in its entirety, revealing an ax-like blade on one end of the long rod. It was a halberd.

Lissa's attempts of immediately finishing this one guy had failed drastically. So much so that the Flaming Arrow she had shot disappeared without a trace. It was entirely clear that she had been too eager.

The bodyguard now knew that the young Princess was still wet behind the ears. She had been too excited to bring a fight without proper insight into her opponent's strength.

"I'll pretend that didn't happen, only if you leave the castle and never return."

The man was forgiving, apathetic, even. He had no use fighting a young girl who didn't know what was good for her. Killing her would have only been petty.

"What? Scared?"

Lissa didn't know when to quit. The truth was she didn't want to.

Currently, outside that very room, there was a squad of guards that were at her disposal. Furthermore, there was also a rather powerful Spirit that can control flames at its will.

Lissa had no reason to back down.

Something backed her foolish confidence, letting her stand her ground. However, it was foolish nonetheless.

"Princess, I truly don't want to fight if I can help it. That is not what I am here for. So, with all due respect, dear Princess, please leave."

The sound of the bodyguard's voice was threatening and serious. He wasn't kidding in the slightest. What the man had meant by that is he didn't have the care for a battle; implicating that if they were to fight, Lissa would lose.

Provocations aside, Lissa had better sense than this. She tried to figure out what the bodyguard had meant by what he said. What was he here for?

Turning her head ever so slightly, her vision immediately focused on her unconscious cousin.

The bodyguard had immediately caught sight of this and raised his halberd. With the tip pointing directly at the Lissa, he begrudgingly warned.

"Think very carefully what you're going to do next."

It was clear that the bodyguard had been hesitant to fight against the young girl. Why would somebody bear arms against a girl that had nothing to do with him? It was against principle, really.

That being said, the case would be different if Lissa did try to do something to the unconscious boy he had been instructed to watch over.

Lissa clicked her tongue in frustration.

She was currently at a crossroads, carefully deciding what she should do next.

From where she was standing, Lissa had a clear shot at Wilfred. She could just as easily eliminate the young boy who had caused so much trouble for Rynold. However, she doubted the bodyguard would let her do just that.

So, what now?

The situation had yet to turn drastic, but it was escalating quickly. No matter what, Lissa felt compelled that she had to do something, anything, to help out, even if she had to dirty her own hands in the process.

With a somewhat firm resolve, she pulled her bowstring ever so slowly. It was then that someone had interrupted from outside the room.

"Don't do anything stupid. Stay calm and think things through."

Prominence Alpha had long sensed Lissa's troubled feelings. The Spirit of Fire was well aware of how the situation was turning out. Because of the small crease between the doors, the guards had been eavesdropping ever since Lissa had entered the room.

The guards loyal to Lissa were ready to get into action; all they were waiting for was when.

The situation had yet to be completely resolved. Them joining the fight prematurely would only lead to disaster.

Composing herself, Lissa put her shortbow to the side.

"I won't interfere with what you're trying to do here. But, you need to tell me what's going on. Why did my uncle do all of this? I need to know what he's after."

She asked for information, information that would hopefully provide some context into this whole thing.

"Unfortunately, I can't tell you that either. Mostly because I have no idea what he's after. Whatever it is, the situation could not be any worse than it already is."

"What do you mean by that?!"

"What else? The Duke should be on his way here now, along with the rest of the army, leaving a trail of blood in their wake. There's nothing you can do to stop them."

"Tell me! What is he after?!"

Lissa was starting to get riled up. The bodyguard standing before her was too carefree in giving his answers. It was clear that he won't budge.

"As I said, I don't know what the Duke is after. I only care about whether the young Master would be fine after all this."

Agitated, Lissa raised her bow and aimed, prompting the Spirit of Fire to interfere once again.

"Don't," the sound of the Spirit's voice echoed from within Lissa's head, "You'll only invite trouble if you do something to them."

However, the wildly frustrated Lissa had lost all sense of reason. Letting out a short breath, a Flaming Arrow appeared as she pulled back the bowstring. Without wasting another second, she instantly let go.

The sound of the arrow being knocked from the bow echoed the room.

Wilfred's bodyguard immediately jumped into action. He quickly swung his halberd in a crescent arc, knocking the arrow aside. The single move that he made easily put Wilfred out of harm's way.

Or, so he thought.

With the arrow now going into another direction, Lissa activated the shortbow's Additional Active Skill: Pivoting Shot.

Immediately, the arrow sharply turned, maintaining the same momentum. From the air, it went straight towards Wilfred.

Not being able to recover from his initial movements, the bodyguard was unable to react in time. The arrow easily penetrated the white sheets that covered Wilfred, leaving a small burn mark as the arrow landed.

However, there was no blood.

With no proper control over where the arrow had landed, Lissa missed hitting any part of Wilfred's body. She, for lack of a better term, was betting on the arrow nailing the young boy.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

The Flaming Arrow had simply missed by an inch, as it landed close to the young boy's thigh.

"You dare?!"

The bodyguard freaked. Immediately swinging his halberd, the man sought to kill. From apathetic turned ruthless, Lissa knew she had made a grave mistake.

Reflexively taking a step back, Lissa dodged the halberd bade by a hair's width. It was way too close for comfort.

Regardless, though, the man didn't stop the relentless attacks.

Lissa realized that she had struck a nerve on the guy as she bore the consequences of her actions. What's more, the strength gap between the two was so excessively large that every single swing of the halberd was a swing close to taking Lissa's life.

Naturally, Lissa would not hold out for long.

Realizing this, the Spirit of Fire was first to move. It barged into the room with a fiery entrance and struck at the bodyguard. With attuned reflexes, the man easily dodged the attack. Prominence Alpha then threw a simple fireball spell to properly gauge the man's strength.

With a swing of the halberd, the puny flame instantly disappeared.

Seeing him do something like that with just a casual motion, Lissa felt afraid, afraid that she had mistakenly angered a sleeping dragon. From a glance, the Spirit seemed skeptical too.

'Interesting.'

The man had quenched Spirit Fire with a simple motion. Furthermore, there were no visible markings on the weapon too. Prominence Alpha knew that it took significant mastery of Augment magic to accomplish such a feat.

For a mere human with no proper training to do that was rather unorthodox.

"You're no match against this guy. Take the other humans and go. I'll deal with him."

As the tensions of the battle stagnated, Prominence Alpha directed Lissa to leave. What will soon ensue was combat of a much higher level than the girl can handle.

"No, I'm staying."

Lissa, much to Prominence Alpha's surprise, stood firm in her decision which was rather ironic, considering how her arms were currently trembling with fear.

The Spirit of Fire let out a haughty grunt in response, saying,

"Fine, so be it. Let's just hope that the others are having better luck than we are."

Leo was rushing through buildings, left and right.

It was perfectly normal for Leo to be fast, speeding through any obstacle with great speed. With Thunder magic, a significant part of Leo's physical attributes increased. Tremendously, in fact.

However, Leo felt that the recent increase in his strength made him a bit too fast.

As the new Emissary of Thunder, Leo had gained access to greater power, much greater than the likes of Rynold's.

At the same time, he managed to keep all of the skills that he had gotten from his previous Class: [Thundermancer] and made them his own.

That being said, Leo knew full well the implications of his newfound power.

He had ultimately made a lifetime contract of serving the Thunder God. Naturally, Leo was wary of the consequences of doing so. Perhaps, there might come a time when he would regret it.

But, at the same time, he felt excited considering the strength that he had.

With his newfound Class, Leo felt strong. What's more, his current strength was still in the early stages. Who knows how strong he'll end up being?

For now, though, Leo kept moving forward.

His current goal was to rendevous with Rynold, wherever the guy is. But, with his speed, finding him shouldn't be too much of a problem.

What worries Leo, however, was that something might have happened to Rynold already. After all, he had no idea how long it has been since he passed out.

Holding out his hope, Leo kept running with great speed and finesse, until he stopped dead in his tracks because of a scream in the distance.

Without a second thought, Leo ran to the spot where the scream had come from.

As soon as he reached it, Leo immediately made a sword entirely out of Thunder. It was his first-ever time using Thunder Forming, so, naturally, he was eager to see how it would perform.

With the weapon resting safely in his hands, Leo quickly stopped the attackers from moving another muscle.
