章 2: Chapter 2 - Escape From Grimrock Mines
After a while, a loud explosion was heard from the north. Marsil couldn't believe the sound was real at first, but his shock lasted only for a few seconds.
"I must move!" he exclaimed.
Quickly regaining his senses, he started running. Chaos surrounded him. The sounds of whips and the voices of other prisoners were all mixed together. Some prisoners were attacking the guards with their pickaxes, while others were running around like crazed dogs. The scene turned into a dust cloud in just five seconds.
"Aggghh!"
"Die, you wretched prisoner!"
Marsil continued to move forward amid the chaos and noise. As he ran, a guard fell in front of him, struck in the head by a pickaxe blow.
A wicked smile momentarily appeared on Marsil's face. The guard's skull was shattered, and he lay dead on the ground. Seeing this gave Marsil some relief, easing some of the vengeance that had built up during the past three months.
"I can't waste time on emotions right now. I need to be fast. The other guardians will seek help from the guards outside soon."
Grimrock Mine Prison was directly under the control of Lord Lenod in Whiterock City, one of the eastern cities. When an incident occurred at Grimrock Mine, the first responders were the Whiterock Guards. Compared to the prison guards, these guards were far more skilled and powerful, as evident from their better training and equipment. Simple prisoners stood no chance against the guards' unit.
There was only a twenty-minute distance between the mine prison and Whiterock City, which could be reduced to two to five minutes with horses.
"Just two more minutes."
Marsil fixed his gaze on the circular opening in the northern area and continued running with all his might.
Once he reached the hole, without looking back, he darted through it and started moving through the narrow, dark tunnel. If it weren't for Eval's words, finding and deciding to use the hole would have been a difficult possibility.
"I hope the old man is taking care of himself."
Marsil thought as he kept running.
After a five-minute sprint, Marsil reached the end of the tunnel and emerged outside. He hesitated briefly, seeing the vast expanse of dense forests before him.
"This should be Whiterock Forest. I need to head south. The towns and cities in the south have uneasy relations with Whiterock City and Lord Lenod."
"The guards or Whiterock military forces won't want to go south."
After a quick plan, Marsil pushed his tired and exhausted body forward and continued moving forward. His gray, ragged clothes were soaked with sweat, and his already weak physique was strained even more.
But none of that mattered. With his mind and heart set on true freedom, he didn't have time to bother or care about such conditions.
With the strength given to him by his mind and determination, Marsil continued heading south for three hours without stopping.
After three hours, Marsil took a deep breath. His face seemed as though it had aged ten years due to fatigue.
"I need to stop now."
Marsil swallowed and, after finding shade under a tree, closed his eyes slightly and grinned.
"I've escaped."
"I'm finally free."
Before falling asleep, Marsil whispered a few things to himself and surrendered to sleep due to exhaustion.
After a while, Marsil suddenly opened his eyes.
"Thump, Thump, Thump,"
He quickly looked around and tried to calm himself down. His heart was beating rapidly.
"It wasn't a dream."
"I really managed to escape from the prison!"
Marsil looked around with a wide grin and took a deep breath.
He wanted to continue rejoicing, but the rumbling in his stomach reminded him of how hungry and tired he was.
"I need to find something to eat."
Marsil grumbled and forced himself to get up.
"First, I need to find a water source. That way, I can drink water and try to catch some fish."
