Another “suggestion” was to make the female protagonist into the type of woman who was weak, not only physically but emotionally—the type who depended on her male counterpart to rescue her from any and every predicament in which the pair found themselves. “In addition, she’s to be willing to believe lies told by a stronger, more worldly woman, thereby causing a good deal of angst?” I shook my head. Whose idiotic idea was that? “You really think this is what housewives want?”

“Our sales department has done its research, and all indicators are that yes, this is exactly what they want. Ballard House will give them that.”

I doubted that strongly, but I had no intention of haggling with him.

I read the last line and blew out an impatient breath. Hadn’t we gone over this last fall? They wanted a final say on the cover art.
