Behind them a 7ft humanoid monster chased them with all its might seeking to eat them alive.

This wasn't actually normal because, even though it had morphed into a nearly inhuman form, it still maintained a small portion of its human thinking faculty. This was how it knew to avoid the hunting expeditions being held by his descendants throughout the generations.

But there was something about these two that played with its mind. They made its primal instincts to take control forcing him to chase them like an aggrieved monster.
