-Flint-
I quickly followed my son out the infirmary and past the pack house to the building with the holding cells. As soon as I stepped foot inside, I smelled the old sweat, urine, and blood of past prisoners, but also the freshly spilt blood of the lone scientist. Not often did we have to use this building, but times like these reminded me how necessary it was.
I deep growl reverberated in my chest and echoed in the dark hallway. As we passed a dozen doors and neared our destination, I heard quiet sobbing. A sadistic smirk grew on my face. Soon, those quiet sobs would become agonized shrieking.
We stopped in front of a door where my son turned to face me before entering. "We are only questioning him." He shot me a hard look. I had to carefully suppress my desire for violence.
Still, My nostrils flared and I tried to hide my growing claws in my closed fists. We'll see what happens. But I only responded with a clenched jaw, narrowed eyes, and a sharp nod.
He pushed the door open excruciatingly slow, and I had to stop myself from barging in and snapping the scientist's neck immediately. Fortunately, solid looking iron bars cut the room in half. The scientist huddled in the corner on one side while the Pack Alpha, Beta, and a few others stood on the other.
"Where were the rest of the laboratory personnel?" Mingan folded her arms as she stared at the man with an icy glare.
The man didn't respond, but merely curled more tightly into himself. A snarl ripped through my throat as I punched into the wall, leaving a dent. Just seeing him made rage seethe in my chest. I inhaled deeply to try to calm myself. It would do no good if the other pack members asked me to leave.
"We can't help you if you don't answer us," the new Pack Beta, Lyell, added.
"Like hell we will!" I couldn't hold back after that statement, and the tiny bit of self control I had mustered cracked. "Talk before I break your neck, you son of a bitch!"
The man shrank back, but his eyes darted in my direction with a look of shocked understanding. "You bonded to one?"
I pushed forward and grasped the cell bars in a death-like grip. "Answer the question." I seethed.
The huddled man finally turned to us completely and deranged glee painted his face. "We didn't know if it was possible!" He exclaimed. "We only meant to sell them on the black market!"
I heard a few gasps and mumbled curses. I roughly banged an open palm against the bars as spittle flew from my snarling mouth. Mingan placed a hand on my shoulder and it was like a heavy weight reminding me to calm down.
"Where did the other personnel go?" Mingan repeated in a cold voice, and I felt the aura of dominance she projected.
"They left when they heard of your intervention. We didn't have enough muscle to stop you." The scientist diverted his gaze to the woman and in a shrill voice added, "I couldn't leave my children. We invested thousands of dollars in this project, and they just abandoned it?"
"Motherfucker!" I roared, once again banging on the bars.
"Did you fuck her?" The man sneered. "Have you already planted your seed in her?" He let out a bark of laughter as if it was the funniest thing in the world.
I couldn't take it. I couldn't allow such scum to exist on this Earth anymore. My adrenaline surged, and before anyone could move to stop me, I ripped the silver lock from the gate, completely ignoring the burn. I threw it open with a loud grating clash and lunged for the pitiful man.
Everyone stood stunned as I slammed his head against the cement floor. Holding him by his neck, I heard a jarring crunch as I punched him in the nose. I hit him with an uppercut that cracked his teeth and bloodied his mouth. He struggled against me, but he was no match.
"You little bitch!" I bellowed.
I would have kept beating him into hamburger helper if not for the many hands pulling me back. I slashed at them with my claws, but more hands took their place. When finally I was pulled to the other side of the cage did I manage to take a deep breath.
"Damn it, Flint!" Mingan pressed a hand into my chest and her nose came inches from mine. Her eyes glowed like fire and she let out a snarl. She turned to her Beta. "Get him out of here!"
I scrambled to my feet before anyone could do anything. She was right. I couldn't afford to lose my cool again. I sprinted through the hallway and out into the harsh sunlight. I shielded my eyes and turned in the direction of the woods. I needed to escape this nightmare.
I took off in a run as I ripped my clothes from my body and crouched down as my bones snapped and twisted. Within moments, I no longer ran on two legs, but four. I dashed further into the trees for Goddess knew how long.
At some point, I finally stopped to breathe. The moon hung high in the sky and the air was crisp. My anger still churned, and a snarl was just waiting to rip free, but I knew I needed to calm down. I was acting like a fool.
So I did the only thing I knew to do. I closed my eyes, and from deep in my gut, I let out a slow, pained howl. Wolves would hear it from miles away, and they'd know of the pain and guilt in me. Pain and guilt of hurting my mate. Pain of not being with her.
But still I couldn't stop.
