章 7: Made To Be Shocked: Chapter 7

-Flint-

I finally made the trek back to the pack house when the blush of sunrise crested the horizon. I knew I probably looked a wreck, but honestly I didn't care. The whole pack heard my cries during the night. There was no point hiding it. I was no longer the Pack Alpha, so maintaining my composure barely mattered anymore. It was both a blessing and a curse.

As soon as I stepped foot into the expansive pack house, my body tensed. I couldn't smell her or see her, but something in me knew she was near. My mate. I inwardly groaned. Who knew having a mate would make me feel so utterly conflicted.

The smell of food reached my nose, so I immediately made a bee-line for the kitchen.

"Flint." My son folded his arms across his chest as he leaned against the countertop. Apparently, he was back to calling me by my first name. I sighed as I slouched into one of the oak kitchen chairs.

"Wanna give me some of whatever you're making?" I raised an eyebrow hopefully.

Seeing Conri cooking in the kitchen of the pack house wasn't an uncommon sight. It was customary for the Alpha and Luna to live on the upper floors of the pack house since it was like the central hub of the Wolfpack. As soon as I retired, I was ecstatic to move into a considerably smaller cabin for some much needed privacy.

I rested my head on the table when I heard Conri sigh, but the clattering of dishes and silverware told me he would oblige me just this once.

"You need to pull yourself together." He chided as he placed a plate of scrambled eggs with sautéed vegetables and chunks of ham in front of me. "Your mate didn't eat at all yesterday because of your little tantrum."

My head shot up as I grimaced. I felt bad, but none of that was my fault. I didn't stop her from doing anything. We opened our homes to these omegas, what right did she have to refuse our goodwill? What an ungrateful brat. Why did the Moon Goddess pair me with someone like her?

"Why are you being so gentle with her?" I sneered. "Is my mate some kind of show poodle?

I didn't sign up for that. The Moon Goddess must really hate me, giving me an Omega son, and a spoiled Omega mate. But still, deep in my heart I felt the painful longing to see her, as much as I hated it.

Conri scoffed as he sat across from me to eat. "How were you Alpha for such a long time?" He spat.

I held in my growl. The only reason I didn't pounce on him was because he was my son. That and… I knew he didn't mean that to be disrespectful even with his harsh tone. Sure, I had the reputation as a ruthless Alpha, but was I always this cruel?

I rose from my feet. He had a point. It was my responsibility to protect my mate, maybe I needed to make more of an effort. I grabbed my plate and a glass of orange juice, and also snatched a banana from the basket in the center of the table.

"You little shit." I muttered about him as I exited the kitchen, and heard him snort in mild amusement.

I ascended the 3 sets of staircases before I reached the Alpha's living quarters. A long hallway of guest rooms stretched in one direction while the other direction had a door that led to the homier area that the Alpha and her family lived in.

I didn't bother hiding my heavy footsteps as I trudged down the hall. I reached the last door and instantly felt the presence of my mate behind it.

All the other omegas were assigned to volunteers amongst the pack, but my son specifically brought my mate to live here. I was glad for it though. I don't know how I would have handled having a little bratty show poodle living with me in my tiny cabin.

I knocked once with the back of my knuckle before swinging the door open with the clearing of my throat. I stepped inside and placed the dishes on the table near the door, but not before a head popped up from amongst a nest of blankets on the bed.

Immediately, I noticed how emaciated she looked, like she was moments from withering away. The heavy bags under her eyes matched mine and her long hair was a mess of tangles. When I met her angry eyes, my breath stopped, and I knew then that I'd never seen anyone more beautiful. I felt the heat raising in my body and my skin prickled.

"Eat." I grunted.

She let out a strangled hiss as she bucked with a glare. Nothing about the way she looked would ever scare anyone, but the outrage in her eyes made me recoil.

I wanted to say something, anything, but my mouth was suddenly filled with sand. Instead, I stammered something unintelligible and quickly slammed the door shut, much louder than I expected.

Like a pup with its tail between its legs, I sprinted down the hall and practically tumbled down the stairs. When I reached a safe distance away, I leaned against the wall and palmed my eyes. I was light headed and my heart beat a mile a minute. What just happened?

"Still think she's a show poodle?" My son rounded the corner and smirked when he took in my current state.

I shook my head dumbly and gaped at him. She was far from a pampered poodle. I've been in her presence for a collective two minutes tops, but it was enough to wreck me. If anything, she struck me as a feral cat with her hackles raised and teeth bared.

Conri let out a bark of a laugh and brushed past me, the smirk never leaving his face. "I'll give you some privacy."

Still slack jawed, I glanced down and finally noticed the massive tent in my pants. I don't think I've ever blushed harder.
