章 40: Ruined Date
"Trust me, I won't let you fall", Mateo said, leading her out of his car. She had been on blindfold since she got in for a ride.
"Why do I have this strong feeling that I've been here before?", she squealed.
"Really?".
"Maybe. I seem to forget easily, you know", she replied.
"Just a few more steps to go and you'll see for yourself. Three, two, one...", he counted.
Finally, he untied the knots of the blindfold. "You can open your eyes, beautiful".
Her vision was blurry at first till her focus became clear. "What are we doing here, Matt?", Vanessa asked, curiously.
He smiled, "Rekindling old memories".
A childhood friendship which slowly grew into an unconditional love for each other.
He was 8 and she, just a 6 when they first met here, at the dessert store, sparks igniting when they drew closer. A little chemistry stirring up between them, but who had an idea of what real love felt like? They were only kids, then.
A late hour for dinner, most of the tables were empty. Mateo pulled out her chair. She sat comfortably and he sat across her. Slow songs playing in the background. The only glowing light was from a few well placed candles, under the bright stars in the sky.
"It remains a sacred place for us, the place where our story began", he reached out for her hand. "I didn't know what love was until you taught me. Our journey was scary but beautiful", he paused, filling their glasses with a bottle of wine.
She took a sip and dropped the glass. He continued, "I was scared we wouldn't work out, but you made me see love in a different way. Fighting through hard times, making up, surprise dates, spending ample time together, late night calls and in all, having eachother's backs".
"It's kinda funny how I can't imagine my life without you...". A tear ran down her cheek, but he couldn't notice it on her face. It was dark.
"I figured out that you were my missing puzzle", he got on his right knee, holding out a beautiful diamond ring, "Are you willing to make me whole?".
Without another thought, her palm landed heavily on his left cheek, his right and again, on his left, making the ring slip out of his hand. Who would have performed such an act to ruin a perfect proposal? Well, only Vanessa would and she just did.
"That's for making a fool of me, Mateo", she snapped.
He held his cheek as he beared the stinging sensation, preventing himself from raising his hand back at her. "Vanessa!", he groaned in his deep voice.
"Save it, please!", she cut in. "Did you really think I wouldn't find out everything, huh?".
She tore out in anger. "How long were you prepared to keep me in the dark? You fucking cheated on me with a dirty slut and now, you're about having a child with her and you come on your knees to me? Aren't you disgusting?".
"I'm sorry, Nessa. I made a mistake and that was in the past. I can explain-
"Explain what else, Mateo? The fact that you were recently diagnosed infertile and the reason you hid it away from me?". His mouth gasped wide-open as she broke out the last statement. It had been barely a month since his medical report confirmed it.
"I swear, Nessa, I made out plans on telling you, but...", he hesitated for a while. "I just couldn't because I wasn't ready to lose you. I agree, I was being self-centered but I couldn't help it. I felt you'd understand later on when I told you and maybe, we... we could adopt kids", he tried explaining his reasons.
She threw a fist at the table, causing the wine bottle to roll down and shatter into thousand pieces, and the content spilled out. "Enough! Stop justifying your wrong actions. I'm literally fed up with your bunch of lies- infact, everything!", she cried out.
"I can't risk spending the rest of my life with a liar. You need to understand that little lies hurt and I fucking care about my mental health. I thought we would make a good couple, but no! You proved me all wrong. I'm sorry but we are over", she grabbed her purse.
"I won't regret a thing, that's my final decision", she added. Her heels crushed some piece of the broken glass as she stormed off.
Mateo ran after her. "Nessa, hear me out, I beg!", he cried. "You're my only hope–
"Go to hell for all I care!", she cursed. "Stay away from me, keep your distance. I don't wanna ever set my eyes on you. Do not dare me", she screamed, walking herself into the dark street. He had finally gotten what he deserved, a dose from Karma.
