Isabelle still made it to work the next day, despite the harrowing events of the previous evening. She knew that Kritsana remained in police custody, facing the consequences of his actions.

The authorities had charged Kritsana with first-degree assault for harming two men with a pocket knife, sending them to the emergency room. One of the victims had nearly died from excessive blood loss.

Isabelle approached her manager, Samantha, with a polite inquiry. "Is there any unpaid leave available?"

Samantha smiled sympathetically. "How many days are you thinking about?"

"I'm not sure—a month or two, perhaps," Isabelle responded. "I don't want to resign; I love working at the airport and interacting with all the people. But I don't want to be here for the moment, not unless..." Her voice trailed off, the unspoken implication hanging in the air.
