Chapter 24: The Out of Control
"What an astonishing coincidence! Alice Kingsley saw the anomaly in the Antigonus family's notes in her dream. With Alice's prior warning, Dunn did not read the Antigonus family's notes, which is logical."
...
"The situation took a turn. Dunn entered the dream of Hanass Vincent and saw the clear image of the True Creator, suffering great harm. However, he was not contaminated, which would be noticed by the higher-ups of the Night Watchers."
...
"With the reminders from Alice and Daly, Dunn began to try role-playing, which improved his condition to some extent."
...
"It's unbelievable! Klein Moretti noticed the hidden influence of Ince Zangwill and saw that dark red chimney."
...
"Klein encounteredSirius Arapis in the library and had no choice but to kill him, thus cutting off half of the clues regarding the Lanrus incident, delaying the discovery of the problem."
...
"Klein met Megose, but his spirituality prevented him from investigating further, and he did not notice the subtle anomaly afterward. This is logical; our story is not fabricated."
"He collected information about the red chimney but always chose routes that did not include the target. Perhaps in two or three months, when he reaches the last batch, he will discover the real 'red chimney house.'"
...
"Alice Kingsley noticed something wrong through a car accident. With her reminder, Klein realized that things were not simple, and they reported this to Dunn together."
"Dunn contacted the Punishers and the Heart of Mechanics team. After investigation, they confirmed that Megose's child was actually the offspring of the True Creator."
"The official Beyonders of Tingen City reported this matter, and the three major churches each sent high-level members from Backlund. Oh, poor Ince Zangwill, his plan failed once again, and Megose will soon..."
A slightly pale hand grasped the quill that was writing and moved to the next line to start anew:
"The arrival of a large number of official Beyonders attracted the attention of the members of the Aurora Order in Tingen City. They discovered Megose, who was pregnant with the divine child, and contacted Mr. A in Backlund."
"As the divine envoy of the Aurora Order, Mr. A's movements would inevitably attract attention, drawing the focus of all official Beyonders in Backlund. This is logical."
...
Just after being shocked by the news that Megose was pregnant with the offspring of the True Creator, Alice was hit with the news of the arrival of the Aurora Order's divine envoy, Mr. A.
This discovery was made outside Megose's house. Mr. A, who was preparing to take Megose away, happened to encounter the Red Gloves team guarding outside, but Mr. A did not take action and left the scene directly.
"So, he ran away?" Alice asked simply upon hearing this.
"He let the Red Gloves go," Dunn glanced at Alice with a warning look. "The shepherds of the Aurora Order are considered the strongest in encounters below demigod level. If you run into him, escape as quickly as possible!"
"I won't be that unlucky..." Alice almost instinctively wanted to say she wouldn't be that unlucky. As a lucky person, she trusted her luck, but recent events made her uneasy. She recalled the initial scene in her memory—the lucky person who accidentally fell to their death—and swallowed her words, "I understand."
"From today, you must go out in teams of three or more. Alice, you are no exception." Dunn warned Alice again.
Not completely unaware of the gravity of the situation, Alice quickly realized the seriousness of the matter and restrained her usual casual and lazy attitude.
In this solemn atmosphere, Alice saw her first out-of-control person.
"I need your help." In the underground market, Alice, who was squatting and staring at a "monster," was taken away by Swain.
"A member of a Punisher team nearby has lost control. We must deal with him before he harms ordinary people!"
Since stepping into the world of Beyonders, Alice had heard countless times about losing control. Many people marveled at her luck—for not going mad, not losing control and turning into a monster on the spot, and not suddenly going mad or losing control later.
But hearing about it and witnessing it firsthand are different. When she saw Dunn's serious and decisive response, and when she sensed Dunn's sudden heavy mood, Alice's emotions also became heavy—she thought of Old Neil, who had gone for treatment and had not returned.
In fact, Alice had only met Old Neil briefly and had little affection for him, but she had heard Dunn mention Old Neil, who had been his comrade for many years.
... Losing a companion must be a painful experience, right?
Passing through the chattering drinkers, they followed Swain to the dock area, panting.
Dunn handed Alice two sleep charms, and when he rushed forward, Alice understood what she should do—in Dunn's mind, she was probably still not a team member but a civilian holding a gun.
"But I am also a Night Watcher." Alice muttered, putting the charms in her left pocket, reaching for the revolver in her underarm holster, and adjusting the firing position and trigger.
The monster burst out of the crack in an instant. Alice caught a glimpse of the monster's appearance: it was over 1.8 meters tall, wearing tattered shirts and pants, with dark green scales covering the exposed areas. Its hands and feet had membranes like those of aquatic animals. It had a wrinkled head, vaguely human-like, with mucus flowing down the scales, constantly dripping.
Alice pulled the trigger, and the bullet accurately hit the monster's eye area, one of the few places not covered by scales.
The pained monster abandoned Swain, who was fighting it, and lunged at Alice.
The strong fishy smell came with the wind. This scene was more shocking than the carriage rushing towards her, but Alice felt unexpectedly calm. She ducked, and as the monster lunged at her, she slipped under it and hid behind the approaching Punisher.
What happened next had little to do with Alice. Watching the angry people defeat their former companion and then help each other stand, Alice felt an indescribable sadness.
In a daze, she seemed to feel a warm embrace and hear someone shouting hoarsely at her:
"Huanhuan, run, don't look back!"
