Maris showed Nyx where everything was—the drinks, the food, and even the utensils. She was very particular about the order in which things were to be served and what they were to be served on. She even told Nyx who among the guests were smokers and handed her a small silver lighter, instructing her to light their cigarettes when needed. She made Nyx practice on her at least twice.

"Smoking is not a good habit to have," Maris said, "but if you must smoke, then smoke like you're in a movie." She demonstrated with a cigarette holder, making it look elegant.

While all this was happening, Maris ensured Nyx had a couple of glasses of champagne. She had some herself but made sure Nyx drank more, insisting that it might be her only chance to relax since she'd be working all afternoon.
