章 21: Impatience Kills

Dagon sat in that cave for about three days. During that time he'd practiced his magic spells, specifically focusing on Mercury manipulation.

He had made ball of Mercury about a foot in diameter and practiced manipulating its shape, form and size. He'd make small figures, weapons, spikes, shapes, but no matter how many forms he made, that wasn't the challenging part. The hard part was holding it in that state. Though he could make the various forms, he could not hold them in their state for longer than a couple minutes at most.

At first Dagon assumed it was due to his exhaustion, but, the more he practiced, the more he realized that wasn't the case. No matter how hard he tried he just couldn't get a grasp on it, the only time the Mercury's state stayed in form for a decent period of time was when he made it straight from the raw material, when he tried to change its form though it would not stay.

Over the first two days the attempts gradually became more and more irritating to the point Dagon was casting spells and manipulations out of anger and his progress began to go backwards.

"Focus." Sephtis said on the third day. Gena was watching from the opposite corner of the cave. "You are letting your frustration get the best of you. You'll get nowhere like that."

"RRAAH!!" Dagon roared, tossing his hand into the air in frustration. "WHAT THE HELL!! IVE MADE NO PROGRESS AT ALL!! THIS IS SO DAMN POINTLESS!"

"Calm down, damnit." Sephtis growled, "You are annoying."

"How the hell am I supposed to get stronger if I can't even do the basic spells?"

"No one can become powerful within a week of getting their Kinship, Dagon. It took Ayden three years of practice with Gena to be at the level he was, so don't expect to get to that level in such the little given time. Be patient and focus on what you can do, being lost in your anger and impatience will only hinder your growth. Your father-"

"IM NOT HIM!!!!!" Dagon roared, slamming his fist into the rock. Suddenly, large spikes of mercury exploded out of the wall around Dagon's frame, shooting outwards into the cave.

Everyone was silent.

Dagon's fist loosened up. "I am not my father. I'm not as great as him. Nor will I ever be. He had time to train, he had time to get stronger. I don't." He sighed. "My time is limited. The dragons won't live forever. The longer I wait, the more dragons get captured or killed. The longer I wait the less chance I have at success, but at the same time I keep being told again and again that if I don't wait, if I don't take time to train, I'll fail. Honestly, it just feels like I'll fail either way at this rate…"

"What happened to the boy who aspired to be the king of dragons?" Sephtis growled, rising to his feet. "What happened to that boy who so audaciously challenged me? Who promised me greatness, who promised to free the dragons, who promised to become a king? Were they all just vows devoid of loyalty? Well?!"

Dagon was silent.

"I did not forge a Kinship with you only to learn you are a pathetic coward who gives up the moment things get difficult." Sephtis hissed, his talons clacking on the ground as he moved forward until his snout was only meters away from Dagon's head. "I forged a pact with you because I saw potential, I saw bravery, I saw strength. So show me it."

"Sephtis, that's enough." Gena growled. "Dagon meant every word he spoke to you that day. But just as you expect him to have patience, you must be home patient with him, you are not exempt from the flaw of impatience."

"No, but he can't just drop everything and pout pointlessly when things don't go his way."

"You are correct, but you should also realize he has never been trained in magic before. He wasn't prepared for it, so he is in over his head. Try to understand that."

"I do understand, but I also understand that you are the one who raised him, and his lack of practice in magic preparation is your fault." Sephtis hissed aggressively.

Dagon suddenly began laughing, starting as a slight chuckle until it became a boisterous laughter that hurt his wounded ribs.

Both Gena and Sephtis turned to him, confused.

"What are you laughing at, boy?" Sephtis asked.

"You two are like a couple." Dagon said, still laughing, "it's like you are the parents trying to manage me the kid. I don't know. I just found it amusing."

Gena gave a snort. "As though I'd ever parent a child with this brute at my side."

"Same goes for me, I would never join tails with some underdeveloped hag." Sephtis growled.

"Excuse me?"

Dagon's laughed became even more boisterous then.

"Stop laughing!" Both Gena and Sephtis growled in unison, then glaring at one another.

"Thanks, guys. I'm better now." Dagon said, trying to control his laughter as he wiped tears.

His expression went serious then, and the spikes he had made before began to move, becoming liquified as they drifted through the air, conjoining into a swirling ball before Dagon's hand. His eyes narrowed as he focused on the ball of mercury, and it's shape began to change.

It became longer and thinner, forming the edge of a blade as well as a hilt with knuckle guards. The shape wasn't perfect nor was it completely solid, but it drifted to Dagon's hand and rested in his palm. Once it touched his skin, it became completely solid.

"Ha..haha! I did it!" He cheered. He held the blade there unmoving in his hand, and it stayed in form the entire time.

"I actually did it!" He called, "final..ly.."

The weapon's shape fell apart to liquid that came to the ground as Dagon fell over u conscious from exhaustion.

"Well." Sephtis said, "He kind of did it?"
