A thin film of moisture veiled my vision, and I blinked to clear it from my eyes. The face staring back at me from the bathroom mirror is gaunt and starkly pale. Two months inside the Russian prison took its toll on my appearance. I couldn't even fathom how Lucian could want me right now. His girlfriend was infinitely prettier, with her warm complexion and vibrant features.

A hard knock startled me.

"Your minute's up." Lucian's voice was harsh, and I knew I couldn't delay facing him any longer. Taking a breath to calm myself, I opened the door.

He was standing at the entrance, waiting for me. I expected him to lead me back, but he stepped into the bathroom instead.

"Get in," he said, pushing me toward the shower. "We're going to wash up."
